That is certainly not cool, no pun intended. I will read the article more but this looks like something that would only happen if you rely on PBO and not stock OC.

people probably were happier not knowing, along the lines of 'ignorance is bliss'. Then again, if the gist of the article is true, mobo manufacturers shouldn't fudge like that to begin with

Playing devils advocate here...While it is wrong and mobo manufacturers should not be exploiting. While the argument exists it could shorten the lifespan of the CPU, I would also argue that the majority of us upgrade before we see any degradation to the CPU anyway. Obviously that is not the point and we as consumers should not have hardware that deliberately harms other hardware BUT I reckon if this was never mentioned....most would never even notice.

The part that gets me is that they do it with intel & amd boards, Intel looks the other way & still covers the cpu under the warranty, BUT amd has repeatedly asked the companies NOT to do this and WON'T cover the cpu under warranty if they determine it's from the board running it @ the constant over voltage. They will cover OC'ing, but NOT if the board is falsifying the voltages.;) The reason is it gives an over voltage even when idle so it's basicly running OC'd ANYTIME it's on,even in sleep or hibernate.:(

Gamer's Nexus just put out a new video on the subject, the short and sweet is that yeah, motherboard manufacturer's may be fudging numbers on some consumer boards and it was worse on beta review BIOSes, its bad practice, but it's going to negatively affect the lifespan of the CPU in the typical lifespan of a CPU under stock conditions.

...well, I downloaded the latest HWInfo beta / 'deviations' and checked my TR 2950X (that particular Ryzen gen not mentioned yet)...in any case, per below, my MSI X399 Creator is either power-starving that CPU (bios settings @ 4.275 all-c, 1.325v) or everything is just fine (meaning it never dropped below 100%). Bench for load used was CPUz bench loop - not

the most terrifying, but consistent enough...

From what I gathered, not dropping below 100% is the important part, did that 185% happen while under load, or after it switched to idle or lower load?

 

I remember that GN mentioned something along that line that at idle its not accurate at all and can't really be trusted.

...as near as I can tell, the 100.7% happened under load, the 185.4% under 'idle'
