So, who's bought a new 5700XT?

I nearly went for the Sapphire Pulse, but in the end the extra £15 made the Powercolor Red Devil the winner for me. Better cooling and lower noise. That and game clocks increased too (although not really anything significant).

Upgrading from a reference Vega 64 simply because it's too loud for me!

Nice ! I need to look into some benches for that card. Granted I do not need one but I like to see what the red team are getting up to.

Any idea when we can expect something new from AMD re big navi or even RTX 3000?

I too just listed my ref v64 + bykski block for sale but at the same time inherited a 3440x1440 100hz panel. I'm worried the 5700xt isn't going to be enough so it may end up being a used RTX 2080 for me (at least then I could play quake 2 RTX :p)

I wouldn't go for AMD at this point TBH. It doesn't seem like they can make good CPUs and GPUs at the same time. Sure, AMD is cheaper than the equivalent nVidia card but it does lack DXR. DXR isn't really essential, but it is nice to have.

Really? I heard plenty of good things about the 5700xt. My only concern was the high power consumption for such a small die on 7nm. A scaled up Navi may be another vega 64 scenario power/heat wise which I want to avoid unless the arch gets tweaked. I do think I'd like just a little more performance than a 2070 or 5700xt have on the table though.

Nvidia of course has the high prices. I'd probably take the plunge on a 2080 for $499 new if that happens any time soon.

it's still a weird time for upgrades tbh. I'm back and forth.

Both 5700XT and 5700 run very hot. At least with the stock blower coolers. I don't actually know if the aftermarket coolers have solved this, but the stock cooler isn't good enough. They're reaching 110c which is very, very high considering older AMD cards with the stock cooler would rarely go above 85-90c. AMD do insist that it's safe for these GPUs to get up to that temperature, but still, I'm not sure how well they'd last in the long run. Then again, they could have just changed how they get the temperatures which result in higher readings than previous GPUs.

I figured maybe those complaints were hotspot temps, I used to see numbers getting close to that on my vega 64 (not after going under water though). 110C does concern me though. Already have enough to deal with having the x570 chipset :p.

eh.. given the performance and temps I think the 2080 is the existing card for me.

AMD stating 110c is fine is them just covering themselves IMHO. No way would that be a practical running temperature for long term operation, nor can I see that being good for longevity. Personally I think they bungled the ref cooler design and are trying to save face...big time

I went for the Powercolor Red Devil one. Biggest cooler and meant to be the best noise/temps. I wouldn't ever go reference AMD again, the blower is crap.

But, in terms of pricing, the 2070 Super was a good £50-£75 more... only the Founders Edition was close and that is always out of stock.

I think it'll be a good decision in the end to be honest, not too concerned.

Oh yeah, you can't go wrong either way. Both are very good as long as maxing out games at 4K 60fps+ isn't your goal.

I'm getting a RX5700 in for review next week and should have a 5700XT shortly after that, I'm looking forward in getting them on the bench.

Reference or aftermarket? I want to see how well various aftermarket ones do as far as heat and noise go.

Not sure what truth there is to it, but reviews mentioned it was due to AMD using super aggressive fan curves to keep noise levels at a minimum.

As far as heat cycling goes, it depends solely on the tin alloy used. You'd assume they know what they're doing... but then again, nVidia got bitten in the backside for it once.

Vega 64 was the same. The reference cooler prioritises sound to such a degree that the card will throttle itself.

missed opportunity, could have said "Pook Only Owns Pascal" so it'd be POOP.

So, in the end I cancelled my 5700xt. I had a lot of issues with a dead Vega 64 and I was unsure as to whether the card was faulty, or there was a really niche bug with AMD drivers and something else I was running (The issue was basically that I couldn't install any drivers).

As such, I opted for the slightly more expensive 2070 Super. Luckily GSync is now compatible on my FreeSync monitor.
