  • [pcgamer] ASRock figured out a way to overclock Intel's locked non-K Comet Lake CPUs

"ASRock BFB (Base Frequency Boost) technology allows users to install non-K series CPUs on selected ASRock 300 and 400 series motherboards (even non Z models) and enjoy the base frequency boost with the hidden power of processors immediately," ASRock says.
    ...
By altering the PL1 value, ASRock is essentially tricking a CPU into running at a faster base frequency than it otherwise would. For example, the Core i9-10900 is a 65W CPU with a 2.8GHz base clock. ASRock's BFB mechanism pushes the TDP above its default setting, up to 125W, at which point the CPU apparently thinks it should be running at 3.7GHz.

This really has me rethinking the 10900K. I know I won't overclock. 5ghz is enough for me. Why not just go for the 10900F and see if anything interesting comes up during testing? Maybe eventually it'll even lock 5ghz all core with some magic.

Yeah a similar thing happened with Skylake and the Skylake-OC feature on some motherboards. It was nerfed pretty quickly too.
