NVIDIA Planning To Introduce A Traversal Coprocessor With The RTX 3090 GPU

NVIDIA is planning to introduce a revolutionary new idea involving a traversal coprocessor and a dual-sided PCB with its RTX 3090 GPU (and family) according to
. What this essentially means (if it turns out to be true) is that the upcoming graphics cards like the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 will feature a dual-sided PCB with the GPU core on one side and a second co-processor on the other side. I do want to make it clear that I have no idea if this is true or not and it is only being posted because it has technical merit and Coreteks has proven to be reliable in the past. All that said, this post is still very much a rumor and copious amounts of salt, while not good for your health, are highly recommended.

This could be interesting and lends credence to the dual fan cooler whereby they are in a top and tail configuration. I can also understand that there would possibly a small market in order to sell the co-processor only which would bring raytracing to non RTX cards but I think that would be such a small market, but hey they did it before with the Physx cards.

 

The only odd thing I see with having the RT cores on the other PCB and no longer on the die as surely you are introducing an element of extra latency which would be undesirable.

 

Only a rumour in any case.

Would have liked to see another dual GPU card for the sheer novelty of it, but the XX90 replacing the Titan is much more practical and probable.

If they do this then they will I would imagine put the RTX processing on a separate die. This way they can sell this as a separate product to the GTX crowd. Of course this will not just be RTX, as the die will be tensor cores, there are other applications to this tech other than games.
