Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser is leaving the company

Dan Houser, co-founder of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games, will leave the company in March. The news comes from an SEC document registered by publisher Take-Two Interactive (via @Nibellion on Twitter). This move comes after an “extended break” taken by Houser that started in the spring of 2019. Rockstar Games was founded in 1998, and Dan Houser contributed prominently to the company’s successful franchises, including Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, Red Dead Redemption, and more.

This is kind of worrying tbh. I'm a huge fan of their single player games. The lead producer Leslie Benzies got fired not too long ago. I wouldn't like to see their games go to annual/semi-annual garbage rushed out as quickly as possible. Leslie Benzies and Dan Houser were pretty infamous for being perfectionists and want to make the best possible games. I wouldn't be surprised if Dan leaving is to do with Take Two being very money hungry and forcing him to monetized things he doesn't want monetized as well as them trying to force Rockstar to release games more often. The last game Rockstar released before RDR2 (2018) was GTA V in 2013. Complaints from Rockstar employees being overworked while not only releasing 3 games in total in the last decade just shows how much work they do put into making their games.

I'm moderately excited for CyberPunk 2077 but the Witcher series is the only games by them that I've played and I wasn't a fan.

It is a big loss for Rockstar, no way to paint it in another light. The games he was involved in such as the ones in the article, GTA, Max Payne, RDR have all been hits. I loved Max Payne over any of the other hit titles and if Max Payne were to continue in some way shape or form, it would be a shame if it was worse off for his departure.
