  • EHW Roadmap (2019)

    Hey all,

    Just a small update

    Phase 1

    The server (COMPLETE)

So in the coming days, we will be migrating the site over to a VPS server as opposed to the shared hosting we are currently on. I have decided to do this for three main reasons:

    1. No sharing resources with neighboring sites. While on shared hosting you get ''Dedicated'' virtual resources, on shared hosting these can still be impacted by demands of a neighbouring site. Who wants to have a slow experience because some other site we have no interest in is hogging resources right ?

    2. VPS servers allow for much more flexibility. In the upcoming release of VB5.5.5, we will be able to link the forum to an installed anti-virus/anti- malware solution on your hosting server. Unfortunately with shared hosting you are unable to install certain applications. With VPS you have the ability (so long as the server OS supports it) to install whatever you wish. As such we will be installing ClamAV on the server and linking the site to it. What does that mean ? Ultimately it means that files uploaded to the site will be actively scanned for threats. This provides a more secure environment for everyone. This will couple with our firewall and server anti-malware solutions.

    3. Server backups. So we have backups of the site, but that does not take into consideration the hosting servers configuration. Our poor admin recently felt the pain of having to wipe clean our server and re-build regarding the recent zero day exploit that damaged the hosting server. Now with VPS you can make a backup of the hosting server environment. So should anything happen in the future, we will have a clean backup of the hosting server which will mean less downtime and less pain !

When the migration takes please, we will see some downtime and possibly some disruption while all the services are re-linked etc, so apologies in advance for that. We will try to minimise it as best we can. All things considered, once we have migrated to the new server, we will be in a VERY good space security and performance wise, and we will not need to look into server migrations again for the foreseeable future as we will have already laid a firm foundation.

    Vbulletin 5.5.4 Upgrade (COMPLETE)

Originally we were going to skip the 5.5.4 upgrade, however there have been some incremental improvements with regards to the handling to Javascript, as such we will treat the 5.5.4 upgrade as a useful prerequisite to our Broadsweep development work.

Broadsweep development work, fixes & optimizations (COMPLETE)

We have identified some bugs as well as some site performance issues that we want to squash with a view to giving the best experience possible, we will also perform some site optimization at this point too. These works will come after the VB 5.5.4 Upgrade.

    Multi Quotes(COMPLETE)

Unfortunately with the newer released of VB, the multi quote system is not very intuitive. As such we are looking at re-working this system to make it intuitive again. Depending upon the hard coding of the forum software this could be a challenge/not possible. More news to come. *Update* Please see the below video on how to multi-quote on this site.

    Phase 2

    Vbulletin 5.5.5 Upgrade (COMPLETE)

In the coming weeks VB 5.5.5 will be made available. We will be upgrading the site to this version, again there will be a small amount of downtime while this is performed. However along with the standard bug and security fixes these releases bring, we will also relatively soon after be adding forum icons. VB have finally decided to make the inclusion of custom icons for forum channels much easier to implement. This has been achievable for a long time, but it did require code delving and manual image linking. This could not have come at a better time. We have been wanting to include custom channel icons for a little bit now, but have not with a view to more important tasks. Now VB has made life a lot easier in this regard.

We will also upgrade the theme package we use to stay inline with the new VB version. Again, with all upgrades sometimes visual items can get qwerky, should this happen we will iron these out as soon as we can.

    Thanks Summary (IN PROGRESS)

This will show which users ''Thanked'' you on your posts.

PC Rig Specs in Signatures (IN PROGRESS)

I will be having a plugin quoted for and developed that will allow EHW users to display their PC Rig Specs in their post signatures. Why you may ask, the reasons are two fold:

    A. Those of use who are super proud of our builds love to show them off ! So why not !
    B. It is proven that showing your PC Rig Specs in you posts allows other users to help you more easily. If the problem you are having is with your displayed rigs, it already helps answer some questions that those helping you may have about your system and will allow them to help you more easily.

    Nested Quotes (COMPLETE)

We will soon be adding the ability to add quotes within quotes on posts !

Thread image opening behavior improvements. (COMPLETE)

As it stands, clicking on a thread image will re-direct you to the image but will also take you away from the thread you are viewing, this is undesirable so we will be revising this.

Social network icons in user post bits (IN PROGRESS)

This allows users to add little social network icons to their post bits, such as Youtube, Vimeo, FB, Twitter and many more. Please note that this feature may be reserved for premium account holders.

    EHW Videos (IN PROGRESS)

This feature allows for the curation of video content in a more meaningful way.

    Enable Internal ClamAV (IN PROGRESS)
This enables attachment files to be scanned for viruses and malware upon upload to better protect users.

    Phase 3

    Vbulletin 5.5.6 Upgrade
We will be upgrading to 5.5.6 upon its release. The main reasoning for this particular upgrade is that the CKE is getting an upgrade which will see some bug fixes and feature enhancements which we are hoping will be beneficial but we will look into the upgraded CKE on a test platform first to ensure no problems.

    Forum Icons
This one has no particular ETA until we have found a suitable set of Icons to use, but it will come sometime after the VB 5.5.5 Upgrade/Development stages

    Auto updating threads
This function automatically refreshes threads to show the latest replies. This all happens automatically and does not require you to manually refresh the entire web page window. This feature is challenging and we need to make sure that the auto refresh does not interfere with users who may be streaming content from said thread, otherwise it will interrupt said stream. Fingers crossed we can bring this to the site in a meaningful way.

    Front page exposure
We all love to see what the latest and greatest is, having this prominently in image form on the front page always goes a long way.

    That's it folks !

There will be no changes other than the forum channel icons, unless the final release of VB 5.5.5 changes anything but that is HIGHLY doubtful.

As a small update, the site fixes and optimization are going well. We hope to be done with these soon and move on with other site features.

NOW the fun part for you will be getting us to keep our info up to date. (I'm as guilty as the next person for not correcting my stuff when I make changes.) "(Enterprise cracking a whip) Change that INFO! I remember U saying you put 8 more Gb of ram in your machine! It still shows only 8Gb of RAM!!!"
