Hello all,

So we are all very much aware of the Covid-19 threat. It has been amazing to see the Folding@Home community come together to fight this virus which has unfortunately ended lives around the world. We want to keep the folding effort going as the research is just so important, but we also want to give back to all those making the effort to contribute to this invaluable cause.

We would like to present the ''Fight Covid-19" Giveaway. This event has been graciously sponsored by InWin & Corsair. A huge thanks to them for putting up prizing for this event, we all love it when companies can see the importance in these projects. If you would like to show appreciate towards these two generous companies, feel free to maybe share/follow their social media. InWin FB, InWin Twitter, Corsair FB, Corsair Twitter.

Lets take a look below at what is up for grabs !

Prizes

InWin has graciously donated the InWin 904 Pro Case. This is one sleek looking case for any build.

Trouble getting or sending a Work Unit ?

For anyone having trouble getting issues a Work Unit or having trouble sending a finished one back to Stanford, this can sometime be due to server issues at Stanfords end whereby the Assign/Accept servers are saturated or otherwise having issues.

Luckily you can check on the Stanford servers status here : https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats

Sometimes exiting your folding client and re-starting it can help, but sometimes you just have to be patient for the Assign/Accept servers to be ready to serve you.

WINNERS !

I have never folded a day in my life, but I have a rig I can setup and try this out :D I might need some help from the folding pro's...

As a bencher you should show us how it is done with all that hardware ! :p Bust out that Threadripper and a GPU. Imagine if you benched for 2 weeks straight with an LN2 Overclock....blimey. If only haha.

Have you tested your memory recently? Memtest+ included on Ubuntu ISO's have been helping me a lot lately finding bad Ryzen RAM timings and settings. To get to Memtest+, you have to make sure to boot the USB stick you have the ISO in just regular non-UEFI mode.

I have not recently but it is a fair point, I will give that ago to see if I can spot a bad set of timings.

I have not recently but it is a fair point, I will give that ago to see if I can spot a bad set of timings.

On the X370/1700x build I just put together for my buddy kept locking up in Windows on installers or unzipping files, ran MemTest+ and found errors about 30 minutes in to the test.

Checked BIOS and just changed the Memory speed to stock speed, turned off XMP profile, set all timings to Auto, shutdown and rebooted. Then I just set the speed back to the XMP speed and turned back on the XMP profile and shutdown and rebooted again. Ran MemTest+ again and this time no errors after about 5 hours to get through 3 full runs of MemTest+ and all good now. Was definitely a weird issue and threw mew through a weird loop of testing things.

TL;DR: Turn off XMP, Reboot, Turn on XMP, Profit...

Ok guys, anyone out there able to help me setup and optimize Threadripper 3970X? It looks like some people are getting it up to 1 million PPD...which seems like alot for a CPU??

I did a bit of googling and it seems there are some tweaks that need to happen to get the max out of this thing. I read some stuff about 'slot' settings for core/thread count but I am totally clueless.

Also, can anyone give me a really quick summary of how this scales with overclocking? For instance, how much system memory does it use and what the score increase? Overclocking CPU? Mem? I've been in the professional XOC world for some years now but never touched folding until yesterday...I know nothing.

@axipher thanks for your help, will check memory tomorrow. Any ideas for mllrkllr88 ?

So far as I know RAM so far as amount of it plays very little in folding, not so sure about the speed. Last time I checked which was a while ago, performance wise folding was fairly RAM agnostic. Aslong as you have adequate standard system memory you should be good, like 8GB would be fine.

So far as special configuration for the folding client, I am not sure. Unsure if Windows has to be tweaked with respect to the scheduler in order for the folding client to maximize on all the cores/threads of that CPU. I will take a look and see what I find.

Not sure on OC scaling, for me I just compared what PPD I was getting at VS what I got after the OC and that have me the answer.

Overclocking for folding is also a little harder as Folding really will find any tiny instability causing either hard crash or for the work unit to corrupt, you just need to take more time with it.
