Welcome to our Folding Team thread.

 

As many others around the globe, we want to join the fight against the conditions that still plague humanity such as Huntington's Disease,Alzheimer's,Cancer and many more. We as enthusiasts have the perfect gear that can really pack a punch and make very valuable contributions towards the Folding@Home project. Of course it is not just up to us enthusiasts but to all that can spare the up time and contribute.

 

What is "Folding"

WHAT IS PROTEIN FOLDING AND HOW IS IT RELATED TO DISEASE?

 

Proteins are necklaces of amino acids, long chain molecules. They are the basis of how biology gets things done. As enzymes, they are the driving force behind all of the biochemical reactions that make biology work. As structural elements, they are the main constituent of our bones, muscles, hair, skin and blood vessels. As antibodies, they recognize invading elements and allow the immune system to get rid of the unwanted invaders. For these reasons, scientists have sequenced the human genome – the blueprint for all of the proteins in biology – but how can we understand what these proteins do and how they work?

 

However, only knowing this sequence tells us little about what the protein does and how it does it. In order to carry out their function (e.g. as enzymes or antibodies), they must take on a particular shape, also known as a “fold.” Thus, proteins are truly amazing machines: before they do their work, they assemble themselves! This self-assembly is called “folding.”

 

WHAT HAPPENS IF PROTEINS DON’T FOLD CORRECTLY?

 

Diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and even many cancers are believed to result from protein misfolding. When proteins misfold, they can clump together (“aggregate”). These clumps can often gather in the brain, where they are believed to cause the symptoms of Mad Cow or Alzheimer’s disease.

However put it simply, you can download a small client on to your PC that downloads what is called a ''Work Unit'' which is essentially a pre-compiled package for your PC to work on. It will use the free resources on your machine to complete computational work, once complete this valuable data is sent back to Stanford University for their talented team to look at. The great thing about folding is not only does it help the human race but if you are of the competitive nature you will be happy to learn that you earn points for each Work Unit you complete, so if you want to be the best and beat all the rest then here is your chance to show your PC muscle !

 

How to get going

The client comes in many forms and supports Windows as well as a wide variety of Linux based platforms. When inputting the team you are folding for, be sure to enter in 239902

 

or for those using Linux Ubuntu, you may find these steps useful:

The passkey, a new feature beginning with the v6.0 FAH client, is a unique identifier that ties your contributions directly to you (not just those with your username). The use of a passkey prevents others from cheating using your name. Obtain a passkey from our web site (see below), enter it when you configure the client, and the client and servers will do the rest. You should keep your passkey secret.

A passkey uniquely identifies you as an individual donor and is associated with results that you have completed. Previously we did not have unique identifiers in Folding@home (usernames for example can be shared by many people). One main benefit of passkeys is that if someone cheats, we will not need to zero out the points of everyone with that username — only the offending party and those without passkeys.

 

Perhaps more interestingly, we have introduced a new Quick Return Bonus (QRB) points program, which is tied to passkeys. To earn this bonus, you must use a passkey.

 

Finally, the existence of passkeys opens up future possibility of displaying your individual credit and other information, rather than just by username, so use the same passkey for all clients.

Trouble getting or sending a Work Unit ?

 

For anyone having trouble getting issues a Work Unit or having trouble sending a finished one back to Stanford, this can sometime be due to server issues at Stanfords end whereby the Assign/Accept servers are saturated or otherwise having issues.

Luckily you can check on the Stanford servers status here : Folding@home Server Stats

Sometimes exiting your folding client and re-starting it can help, but sometimes you just have to be patient for the Assign/Accept servers to be ready to serve you.

As to me folding, maybe, have a lot of projects to finish, and folding under Debian can be finicky to configure on dual cards.

 

Think I put up somewhere near 130m points for OCN. core a4 units on my Tis in Linux give close to 1.5mil PPD :]

Glad to have you here, I'm in the same boat on my Ubuntu box, my Navi GPU just doesn't want to fold and CPU units are sparse right now.

I remember my folding days under Linux, I am trying to recall the distro I used, needless to say Folding is more challenging on Linux than Windows that is for sure.

I'll definitely join in soon. I have F@H set up right now because Alex has a smug coworker because he got 88K points in a week. We got to 2.425M points in 3 days so a nice chunk will be added when I start folding for here. Bare in mind though, that's my RTX 2070 and Alexs 9900K + GTX 1080Ti and Alexs 2500K + GT1030. I'm averaging about 1.2M PPD for 10-14 hours a day.

There's another forum I'm in that gives out awards for getting to 1 million points. These days you can get 1 million points in a day or two with a year old mid-range GPU.

There's another forum I'm in that gives out awards for getting to 1 million points. These days you can get 1 million points in a day or two with a year old mid-range GPU.

 

For sure, hardware has excelled hugely since the day where 1million points was a huge thing.

 

We are certainly thinking of adding awards to the site but they will certainly be different from other sites so that they are more with the times.

I still can't get work units on my Linux box (CPU only) might have to spin up a VM with a GTX 1050 Ti passed through to get some numbers.

 

Strange, I wonder why that would be a Linux thing ?

Hey I posted this in my other thread (Yeah hi):

 

"Also I will start folding soon under Windows, Debian devs decided to break python gnome support, I tried multiple (10?) terminal operations and installed the package, but got errors from apt. I did get FAHClient to install and run (gdebi hates it as I guess it doesnt conform to new deb packaging rules, tries to install into priveleged directories without correct permissions (and start executables in their path), among other issues. I guess you can send commands to FAHClient in the command line. You can pass stuff to it to print work unit status, etc. I may write a bash script to make this easier and take output to stdout then print it in a terminal.

 

Problem is that f@h has so much computing power from people joining, it has no work units to send. I heard a boinc project called Rosetta@Home is sending COVID-19 units now. We should make a boinc team possibly til f@h can deliver units consistently again."

 

The above relates to the deprecated python-gnome2 package but you can manually run FAHClient from the terminal, configure slots in a cfg file and control it with commands. Id do this if the servers had WUs to assign.
