I got a better appreciation for FSR 2.0 in Cyberpunk trying to run it on my old GTX 970 @ 1440p.  The game was borderline unplayable without it, with FSR 2.0, it was playable.  With my current system, I'd rather run native, I don't need the performance boost.  I can't help but laugh about DLSS 3.0.  What's the point of offering upscaling on only the newest hardware?  It shouldn't need it.  It's the old hardware that would benefit from it.

I always hope that open source beats closed source.  I'm glad it did with monitors, freesync compatible is the standard, it's rare to see monitors that actually include the Nvidia module for g-sync, now they all claim "g-sync compatible", which isn't what g-sync was.  Traditionally, whoever releases first claims proprietary tech, and whoever comes along after says it's open source.  I wonder if that standard will hold true now that Intel has entered the market.  2nd place may not offer open source.  There's also a Chinese company trying to enter the market.  I really hope foreign nation competition doesn't stifle open source.

Features sell hardware but, I do agree with you. FSR 2+ on older hardware is of real value. Extending the useful life of older GPUs helps people stretch out that budget and likely prevents some electronics being tossed in the bin before they might need to be tossed. Quite awesome that you can comfortably run CP2077 on a GTX 970 @ 1440p.

    Hi,

I thought I would take a look around since I've noticed a few OCN members have been talking about this place.  I've been building my own PCs since the early 90's.  Been reading PC hardware review websites since the late 90's.  It's all about gaining and sharing knowledge.  I haven't built myself a new computer since 2011-12 (i7-3770k, Asus Z77 Maximus V Extreme, Plextor PX-256M3P SSD, Corsair Obsidian 800D, Corsair H100 Extreme), but have built many for family and friends the last 10 years.

I'm thinking it's finally time to build a new machine.  Not sure what to get.  I have been getting into video editing and need something much faster.  I bought a Fractal Design Define 7 XL on sale in January.  Where to go from there...

Wow, long time on a single rig! The 3770K was quite a CPU though. Not sure which video editor you use - I use HitFilm and recently Davinci Resolve. I have benchmarked HitFilm quite a bit, Ryzen 1000,2000,3000,5000, 12th gen i5 and my Ryzen 7700X. Your editing program can and will have as much of an impact on the system you build though, for example, I finsh Davinci Resolve to be quite a bit more efficient when it comes to resource utilization. There's definitely been a benefit in both scrubbing performance and total rendering time with newer CPUs and GPUs and newer PCie NVMe SSDs. Do you create videos for fun or for $? Between that and your budget will somewhat guide you in your build strategy. I'd definitely suggest starting by looking at the Ryzen 7000 series or 12th/13th gen platform if you wish to buy new. I personally edit videos on my Ryzen 3900XT and an RTX 3060 12gb with 32gb of 3600 CL16 memory. For my purposes, this system works quite well.

Make the switch!  I am!  Admittedly, I'm duel booting because I like gaming, and also because I'm new to Linux and I can only beat my head on the wall so long before I have to take a break.  I just figured out how to auto-mount drives, name them whatever I want and put them anywhere I want.  I also had to change my spare drives ownership from root to user.

I'm in the process of fighting with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is supposed to have native Linux support.  Something about the initial game login contacts Square Enix servers, which claim to be down.  My research suggests that it's a problem with my steam account linking to Square Enix, and that I'll need their tech support to resolve it on the back end....  I could have just left it on Windows but....  I really do want to be using Linux over Windows.

The main reason for hesitence for me is that I do use my computer to make money, I'm sensitive to a sense of stability. It seems quite possible for me to switch though, more research and some testing seems to be in order. I casually use Linux personally and professionaly but don't spend more than maybe 30 minutes per day (mostly Ubuntu).

So I tried the Z Fold 4, but really didn't like it; mostly because I couldn't attach it properly to a gimbal and shoot videos with it. So I'm returning it for a credit and the new phone is costing me US 460.21:

    My loss is Samson's gain...

Anyway, what really sold me on the deal follows:

Android Police: Ridley Scott’s new short film shows what the Galaxy S23 Ultra's 200MP camera can do

If Ridley Scott can do it, anyone can...

    🤪

Ordered mine as well! ..then my credit card got locked 🙂

I switched one machine back from Windows 11 Pro back to Windows 10 Pro as the former is even more of a big-data sucking apparatus that has zero problems violating privacy and IP. I also build two Linux systems using older hardware and my plan is for emails and documents just to use those. A quick anecdote:

As context, my firm is among other areas active in developing Intellectual Property protection software. I was emailing one of our shareholders about some things, and after I sent that somewhat lengthy email, I wanted to check s.th. I had written after I had sent it. To my horror, the Windows email program in Win 11 Pro had 'hidden' it, with a link to their servers. I hasten to add that I never use Microsoft's OneDrive (as an aside, no Facebook, either for me). In addition to this, I noticed that after a few months or so, my general sent and received emails 'disappeared' from my system and are only accessible on the cloud (see above re. no cloud account). This is just one of many horror stories as to how deep Microsoft (and others) are burrowing into your private and business life...I did switch to Mozilla Thunderbird as my main email program, but the Microsoft email program can be hidden but not truly removed (somebody please correct me - would love to know for sure).

At the end of the day, Ai is fast becoming all the rage and is creating all kinds of headaches re. copyright and various other legal concepts. The point is that if AI is the engine, big data is the fuel and big corporate  tech along with a few governments have no problem adding your data to big data, whether you like it or not, never mind agreed to it. Thus my ongoing switch to Linux for emails, browsing and office suites (LibreOffice).

    > related...will get worse before it will get better

I don't have experience beyond the various versions of Windows 10. That...sounds like an interesting feature (I guess). I will soon get to experience corporate versions of Windows 11 and O/M365. Should be interesting.

As for my email, I still entrust Google and believe it or not, I cruise the internet in FF with NoScript and ublock origin.

EDIT: Ah yea..this is an old thread. I suspect the topic will regain relveancy in the next year or two though!

I saw a video on Youtube showing how to avoid using a Microsoft account when installing Windows 11. The idea of having a cloud account for managing my private physical computer at home is not something I'll be doing, despite being used to having nearly all my games on Steam. Games are one thing, but my core system where I keep personal stuff. No sir!

I similarly very much do not wish for Microsoft to have any involvement in my PC outside of security updates. I'm currently trying to suss out wether or not now is the right time for me to switch to Linux or Windows 11 (away from currently being on Windows 10). The main application I use are HitFilm and OBS. HitFilm is not available in Linux but I have been slowly learning Davinci Resolve which is supported. I don't play many games on my main workstation but it looks like most of the games I play will work but, guessing I would have to Play any Forza releases on test machines.

I agree whole heartedly with this sentiment, I'm also a 2007 OCN'er.  For those curious (not everyone was an OG), I do believe OCN was originally started in 2004 (feel free to correct me).  I'd say anyone in that first iteration before the switch to Huddler could, in theory, be considered "OG".  I think that happened around 2011-2012 or so, ish?  Reason being, that entire time.....the USERS were what was important, both with management and staff members (myself included at the time).  After the Huddler switch, it was all about pleasing Huddler admins.

The users are what made OCN what it is.  The overclocking, modding, water cooling, TEC cooling, Phase Change, LN2, chopping up junkyard cases (who did that I forget?), custom making their own acrylic full on cases (R.I.P. Syrillian), Intel stealing nanometers, playing Crysis on a Pentium 2, etc, etc. "Enthusiasts" do a LOT for the PC communities.  And we do it because "why not".  Obviously that mentality hasn't died with OCN, but its kind of nowhere else on the internet either except for a few smaller forums with everybody all split up.

I dunno, I just think its awesome when we're all together, and have other just as crazy minds to bounce ideas off of.  Bouncing crazy ideas around is where all the fun is. 🙂

Very true! Trying to remember how I found my way there, I think its was either unlocking pipelines on a GPU or maybe just coolbits 😆 They definitely should have kept the 2004 logo through the years though.

Hopefully that kind of community driven success can be re-created here. I suspect there's enough interest and talent to make those things happen.

If you haven't noticed, the tech industry is suffering a significant contraction. Executives are panicking as they try to...

AMD must be doing better than I thought if they can afford to do stuff like this. 😡

Business as usual but after the GPU-pocolypse, general compute component limited availability, and monetery inflation, it feels worse to know companies are actively trying to extend the life of temporarily heightened selling prices. Long live the used market!

    https://videocardz.com/newz/intel-confirms-xeon-workstation-w3400-w2400-series-launch-on-february-15th

So intel finally will release the new "X" series CPU with W790 platform.  If you look at the model chart shown, there will be 8 models for HEDT release.  My question is obviously it will be rather pricey platform, but should I hold off on buying the 13900KS coming out in a few days to see what the prices of those cus are and what the motherboard options will be like?  Also are these cpu's using raptor lake cores?  are these cpus ALL P-Cores// OMG that would be just so freaking amazing!  Whats your thoughts here.... think the X series cpus will OC decent???  Appreciate any feedback

** EDIT...  I think I found the answer. they use golden cove cores ...  Not so sure I want this.  Isnt this the same cores that 11th gen used?

    WCCFTECH.COM

The entire Intel Sapphire Rapids-WS Xeon Workstation CPU lineup has leaked out in addition to the W790 'Fishhawk Falls' platform details.

I had to look it up to be honest, Golden Cove according to Wikipedia was the P core of the 12th gen which would make sense. Usually the HEDT Intel platforms came out after the standard desktop variant had been released, something like 1 or 2 gen behind but with more cores and more cache. It's going to be interesting to see how these CPUs stack up. I'm confident the performance will be there but skeptical of the value. Either way, I hope to pick these up second or third hand someday for a project 😅

I have a handful of 6.4TB U.2 drives with only a few PB written that I haven't put to use yet . Right now I am running two 1TB Optane 905p ssd's in my server on a dual u.2 to PCIe x8 adapter.  There are some other dual adapters that flip the drives, so shorter length but adds some height. As long as your board supports bifurcation, it's easy to add a few more if you have empty PCIe slots.

    image.jpeg

Ah, nice. That looks like a good setup there. In my case I could probably dedicate a PCIe slot for the cause, eventually my MP34 will become unhappy. I'm curious since you're running these on a PCIe card, how hot do they get under heavy write workloads?

  11. It's a wonder I have made it on just a single SN770 1TB in my desktop for two years now. Perhaps I do need one for my desktop too 😁

On my UnRaid server I went with a Teamgroup MP34 drive (good sale last year) to act as my main cache drive - decent drive for sure but should have browsed these too. ATM I'm around ~80-100tbw a year but that will probably increase. I will have to keep these in mind!
