AM4 is EOL, yes. Personally I would wait unless you NEED it now. New offerings from AMD set to drop this year anyway. DDR5 is already starting to come down in price and we should start to see 4 series offerings from NVIDIA by Q3 of this year.

If it's purely for gaming, it would be hard for me not to recommend Alder Lake right now if you were to pull the trigger tomorrow.

    1. Budget
    2. Intended use for build
    3. Timescale
    4. Preference on manufacturer
    5. Does power consumption matter
    6. Intend to OC

Yeah AM4 is dead. I guess really would want to know what your use case is? Gaming only, or have some other uses in mind?

If you really need it now, definitely want to know your use case. If not in a rush, wait for Zen 4 and Raptor Lake and go from there depending on which meets your needs.

    Thanks for the replies.

    1. I'm not saying I have an "unlimited" budget per say, but I want hardware that will get done what I need without a lot of compromises.

    2. I have many use cases, along with gaming, I like to play around with unreal engine, I plan on doing some video editing also.

    3. Time isn't of importance, my thought is if I'm not really gaining significant performance I can buy at EOL for less $$$ possibly.

    4. I do not have a preference, I am more concerned with performance and reliability.

    5. I don't think with the type of PC I plan on building that power consumption is a significant factor.

    6. I love to overclock, if I can have a stable clock and get everything done while doing it, It will happen.

  2. I apologize for the "should I wait?" post. I haven't had a desktop PC for a while here and I want to build a high end PC for gaming, tinkering and everything inbetween. I recently started looking at hardware again and I believe AM4 is pretty much dead, as far as new CPU's so any advice? Should I wait for next generation? Should I consider Intel? I appreciate any opinions, advice or criticism.

You'll still get it's full potential with at least 4x. Even with higher end cards. What matters more is proper power regulation. Ensure the cards are getting enough juice.

I'm hoping thats the case, there isnt much out there in the HEDT market right now... ?

One of my dedicated systems is using an i3 9100f with a cheap motherboard and 8gb ram. It has been online 24/7 for close to a year now, without any problems and always with 2 GPU's. Folding on that CPU is not a good idea with 2 GPU's though, even with using only 2 cores for the CPU client it'll use 100% CPU with every checkpoint and that will have a big impact on the GPU PPD.

The problem is having enough PCI-e lanes on the CPU/Motherboard. With 3080's you'll need 8x lanes per GPU if you don't want to bottleneck them.

What gpu's are you using with that cpu?

In a 2 GPU scenario, yes. Most any CPU/MOBO combo will do.

What about 3 if I end up delving that deep into this?  Sorry,  I have zero experience with multiple gpu's.  Thanks

  6. I understand PPD of cpu's is negligible.  Should I just grab whatever cpu/motherboard for a dedicated folding rig?  I plan on running at least 2 gpu's on the build.  Thanks in advance

I'm a big Fractal Design fan, but I doubt I would try to fit 2 360 rads in my S2.

In my Define 7XL I've got a 420x45 and a 280x45 rad with push/pull fans, and even in a big case like that it's a tight fit. Dual 360 rads would work good in there, with enough clearance for memory. One thing I like too, the dust filters keep the system pretty clean! I try to clean them once every 2 weeks on a system that runs 24/7, easy to do and no dust on my rads.

Dust filtration will be huge, I also plan to run this 24/7.  Great info, thank you

    budget?

Meshify 2 (or the S2, but the 2 is newer and marginally better).

    Be Quiet! Pure Base 600

I'm planning on a high budget for this one....wish Caselabs was still around.  Thanks for these suggestions, I'll check them out.

I enjoy my Thermaltake Core x71, have a 420 up front and a 360 on the bottom side.

    PSU at the bottom too

For as much as this is a great fit for what I'm looking for, I cannot support this company just on principle.  Please don't take that as a criticism on your pick though.  Thanks for the reply.

  9. I plan on starting a dedicated Folding @ Home pc build within the next few months.  My biggest struggle, aside from finding any reasonable priced gpus, is finding a decent case.  I will be using a custom loop on this build,  I plan on having 2 x 360mm radiators.  Can anyone suggest a case that will accommodate the radiators that I plan on using, and is enjoyable to work in? Thanks in advance

  10. I wanted to drop in and introduce myself.  I'm another transplant from that other site, although not very active I did a lot of lurking, and the marketplace.  Hope this site takes off, would be nice!
