be sure to add some benchmark  results so we can see how it compares. Looking forward to pics

Will do, I will do some benchmarks at stock then see what type of OC I can get with this cooler. I don't have high hopes though unless I won the lottery.

  2. Hi All,

After receiving a-lot of great advice the below is what I have built. I will post photos once I have put the new desk together.

In the end I decided to replace the old power supply and grabbed a new case so the cost went up a little. I am sure I could have made some better choices but prices are insane at the moment so I tried to focus on upgradeability so hopefully this lasts me a few years at least.

    CPU: i5 12600k

Cooler: NH-D15s with a single fan

    Memory: Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL16

Motherboard: MSI Z690-a PRO WiFi ( I have needed WiFi a few times in the past so thought it would be nice to have)

    PSU: Corsair Rm750x

SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB

    Case: Lian Li Meshcool 2

I haven't installed windows just yet, I have updated the bios and will hopefully do the rest tonight.

Some notes from this build: My last build was an i5 3570k so I am a bit rusty.

The case was a dream to build in, so much space and cable management was super easy, I can imagine it would be a-lot easier if the PSU cables were not so stiff and the braiding was tighter. I draped the cables over a warm heater for 5 min and that made them easier to bend into shape. One thing to note about this case is if you want to remove the HDD cage you need to do this before installing your PSU.

The NH-D15 is a monster, I have never seen one in real life so it surprised me. This is the only part of the build I am not 100% happy with, the mobo is so tidy with good cable management and the ssd hidden under a heat sink then BAM an enormous ugly cooler, should have gone water but a part of me wanted to try higher end air cooling.

I am running the stock fans at the moment but will change them soon and add a rear exhaust.

I will update this post as I finish off the build!

Nh D15 can cool a stock 12700k but it close to throttling on mine.  I think my chip run ways hotter for some reason. Even my 360mm cooler had a hard time.

Dam! with most of my parts selected cooling is the hardest choice. Does it throttle under high load like gaming/rendering/compiling etc or are you only seeing this when you stress test?

I read all over the place that this gen from intel is hard to cool even at stock. Whats the point of releasing a processor that boosts to 4.9Ghz just to have it thermal throttle, why didn’t they just release them at lower clock speeds? This all makes me think that this gen would be terrible for overclocking as there is not much headroom at all and depending on the lottery your chip could be hitting thermal limits at stock.

I wonder if I have just been out of the game for too long but when I ran an i5-1570k I could never hit the throttle even with the stock cooler it could be slightly oc'd, in the end I ran it at a stable 4.8Ghz with a corsair H80.

I will likely go with the NH-D15s (to account for my tall ram) and see how it goes, if I have to upgrade then oh well..

The D-15 is still a beast. 220w TDP. The cooler Master 360 ML has a 280 TDP, so 🤷‍♂️

    The 12600k has a 150w TDP at 4.9GHz.

I have seen it draw upwards of 230 on stress tests, it seams these chips can draw more power than stated. I am not too worried about thermal throttling say after 15 min of Prime95 as its not a real life scenario for me.

If I am running a couple vm's and play a few rounds of civ I will be surprised if I hit thermal limits.

Anyway for a quick update here is my parts list

CPU: 12600k (12700k if $ allows, ill purchase this last)

    Memory: Kingston 32GB (2x16) CL16 DDR4

    Mobo: MSI pro z690-A

    SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB

Power: Corsair TX750m(mmmm I just realised this is 10 years old now so might replace with a RM850x or similar)

I started looking at video cards and WTFFFFFFF, a 3070 is just not much cheaper then the parts list above, I wont be buying one for at least 6months with those prices.

Thanks everyone for the help so far.

Sorry if this was answered already, are you planning to overclock?

I am unsure to be honest but I most likely will one day, the last cpu I purchased was the i5-3570k and that was a-lot of fun to oc.

Thinking of coolers for this build, I have read that a-lot of the aio's dont cut it for this gen. It seams even with a aio you can still end up hitting the thermal throttle. Whats everyones take on aio vs say a NH-d15s

12700k is worth it. 8 pcore instead of 6 and 4 ecore for your vm.

Could game and run vm at the same time.

A 5800x3d or 5900x could be a good option too.

Air cooler Noctua Nh d15 can cool it if it fit in your case.

For storage i love my sn850 but they are expensive.

Is it worth the extra $200?

read the link, it explains it pretty well

Ok so if I read correctly I could go with a 240 or 360 with the ram I have and I assume I should aim for a 360, last time I built a pc there were not as many aio options out there. The last one I owned was an original H80 and it still runs.

    Won't work with a 140/280/420, apparently it's 42.2mm and you need <36mm.

120 rads mount on different rails than 140s, I'm running a 360 up top and I have miles of clearance.

So are you saying I cant fit a 140/280 or 420 up top?

Any of the 360 AIO's from your site should be decent. I would tend to go with Cooler Master or NZXT versions as I don't like to recommend things that I haven't actually used myself. They are both solid and should be sufficient for a 12600k not being pushed too hard. They are in the range of $300.

As far as storage, getting a 2TB NVME would probably put you out of budget. The selection on the site is somewhat limited. The Samsung here is hard to beat considering alternative choices

And the Crucial MX500 is a fantastic drive for storage. I have quite a few of them. You could pair it with the NVME to achieve your 2TB requirement.

Nice thanks, that ssd looks nice! I can grab that and a 1tb drive to start with, the msi board has plenty m2 and sata so no issue there.

you can fit a 360 up top in both the Meshify 2 and S2, you can technically fit a 280 or 420 up top but you need low profile RAM/VRM heatsinks.

I've got an S2 and ran both a H115i and a LF2 360, and I had to run my 280 in the front or it hit my VRM heatsinks. 360 fits up top without any issue.

    it's the only thing I have 😭

Really? I thought It physically couldn't fit? The memory I have is the kingston fury Renegade 2x16GB CL16, I am not sure if thats considered low profile or not.

Alright, so you are at about $1200 (Including the RAM). You said you have a case, can it accommodate a 360 AIO? How much storage do you think you'll need?

I have the FD Meshify 2 so I can fit a 360 in the front or a 240 at the top. I am thinking 2TB should do, I can always buy more when a good deal pops up.

Thanks for the help so far

Prices are crazy in NZ, does it have to be 12th gen?

It doesn't need to be it just looked to be good value this time round.

    CPU- 12600k - $479

    MOBO- MSI Pro z690-A - $399

What components besides RAM do you have? Do you only need CPU, MOBO, Storage and cooling?

I must have missed that board. I have screens and case from my last build.

Oof, yeah those are some rough prices. Agree with the question is $1800 - $2000 NZD for just CPU, MOBO, RAM, or is that the budget for the whole system?

I hope that money will get me cpu, mobo, ram(already purchased) and ssd storage oh and a cooler

are you going to be running the VMs 24/7 or are you just going to be occasionally spinning them up?

    u havin strok m8

    Dam it, yes I am.

1-2 VM's run all the time the rest I spin up for a couple of hours or a few days.

Excited to see what you come up with. Fist thing if first. What is your budget? I have owned the ASUS Prime z690-p and was not a fan. It was cheaply built and lacked things like POST indication lights and had trouble with XMP settings, so I would steer well clear of that board. My advice would be for the 12700KF if you don't need integrated graphics, it can be had on Amazon right now for $350.

Dam thats a shame as that board seams to be the best low budget z690 board available in my country (New Zealand)

I am looking at getting one with igpu so I can spend more on the base build now. I am wanting to spend $1800 - $2000 NZD Max.

For reference this is where I purchase most parts from. pbtech.co.nz

  13.

So I am starting a new build, all I have so far is the memory (grabbed a good deal).

I stated by building around the i5-12600, then I though well its only $100 more for the 12-600k but then its only $100 more for the i7 so on and so on… so here I am asking for some guidance.

What will I use the desktop for:

    ·      The usual office apps web browsing etc
    ·      Light development work, only compile large projects 1-2x p/a
    ·      Running VM’s, usually 3-4 at a time for running attack scenarios and malware analysis.
    ·      Gaming, I have no intention of buying a graphics card right now but I know I will in the future.

What I have so far in my build list

    CPU: i5-12600k
    Mobo: Asus Prime z690-P
    Memory: Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL16

I haven’t chosen cpu, cooler or storage yet.

With all this in mind will I need more than the 12600K?

  14. Hi All,

I have only just discovered where all the OCN people went! I was on OCN for several years with the same username but was not very active around the time that the site changed. I recognise many of the usernames here so I'm glad I managed to find you all.

I currently work in IT as a Solutions Architect and I do freelance/contract security work on the side. I am looking forward to helping others as many OCN members helped me a lot while studying and learning about hardware.

    Cheers
