AMD FSR 3.1 update adds frame-gen to many games

Recommended Posts

If you grab the latest drivers, you can enjoy the release of version 3.1 of its Frame Super Resolution (FSR) technology. This latest update promises significant improvements in frame rate performance and image processing. With FSR 3.1, AMD reports that users can experience an average frame rate increase of up to 3.3 times in certain games. The update is now compatible with 60 current and upcoming titles, signaling a broad adoption across various gaming platforms. The core enhancements of FSR 3.1 include refined image upscaling quality and increased temporal stability which minimizes flickering and jitter during gameplay. Additionally, the update introduces advanced ghost removal features that enhance detail preservation in fast-moving game scenes.

Another significant advancement in FSR 3.1 is the introduction of Decoupled Frame Generation technology. This feature allows FSR 3.1 to work in conjunction with other image upscaling solutions, offering developers a flexible approach to enhance game visuals and performance. To aid developers in integrating these enhancements, AMD has updated the FSR API to streamline the transition to newer versions of the technology. This update includes expanded support for programming interfaces such as Vulkan, as well as compatibility with the Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK), facilitating easier implementation across various gaming systems.

The effectiveness of FSR 3.1 has been demonstrated in its implementation in the first five PC games from Sony’s PlayStation Studios that now support this technology. These games include:

  • "Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered"
  • "Spider-Man: Miles Morales"
  • "Horizon: Beyond the West Complete Edition"
  • "Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut"
  • "Ratchet & Clank: Time Jump"

Additionally, "God of War 5: Ragnarok" is set to join this lineup soon, further expanding the reach of FSR 3.1.

Performance tests indicate that FSR 3.1 can significantly boost frame rates, particularly on AMD Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards, when gaming at resolutions like 4K or 1440p. This improvement in performance has been crucial for gamers seeking enhanced gaming experiences on both console and PC platforms.

Things to note:

  • FSR 3.1 Frame-Gen can be used with any upscaler, so it can be combined with DLSS and XeSS and will work on basically any modern GPU.
  • AMD promised visual improvements for upscaling with 3.1, however tests so far show that it's visually more or less identical to previous versions. No comment on if these improvements are still coming that I'm aware of.

I'm not sure if this also means frame-gen is now going to work on PS5 for some of these games, the way the article is worded, it sounds like that might be the case.
