  1. Just when you think you know what MB you are going to pull the trigger on.....

I was looking through customer reviews on the board, and there is a fairly large number reporting the same issue, even in 4 star reviews. The common complaint is M.2 slots just up and dying out of nowhere. There are reports of slots DOA out of the box, and some stating it happened a month or two in. The complaint seemed to be most prevalent on NewEgg.

Out of curiosity, has anyone noticed reports of this in other boards? As in, is this some Z690 issue that has been, or is being addressed?

The other curious thing is that people are stating this, yet keeping the boards and giving them four and five star reviews. What the......?

So I did a little Googling this morning and I think it can safely be confirmed that Corsair XL8 is no longer sourced from Mayhems. If Corsair liquid cooling department is run by the old EK folks, then I have every reason to believe they just pulled a Cryofuel switcheroo given their comments below.

Source 1: Corsair forums: Corsair employee confirms new supplier: https://forum.corsair.com/forums/topic/163144-corsair-xl8-fluid-vs-corsair-xl5-fluid/

Source 2: Reddit: Corsair employee shows up saying it is made in Taiwan: https://www.reddit.com/r/watercooling/comments/l0e6c9/corsair_xl8_coolant_who_makes_it/

Source 3: Reddit: Corsair employee confirms XL5 and XL8 to be "vastly different chemical compositions": https://www.reddit.com/r/Corsair/comments/nm19kx/mixing_xl8_and_xl5/

So I would no longer recommend Corsair fluid as another Mayhems rebrand if Mayhems and Mod Water is out of stock.

So.......likely pond runoff from their parking lot. 🤣

I like the "don't mix it with XL5 as it will cause permanent damage to your components" quote.

I wouldn't be surprised. Somehow they still sleep soundly at night knowing they convinced suckers to buy it.

Corsair has been scum since they day they put the H100 on the market. It opened their eyes to "these kids will buy anything in a pretty package" marketing, and they ran with it full bore. That was the moment their quality on everything excepting their memory products nosedived. But....that was also when they stuck giant ornamental fake heat spreaders on all of their RAM in an attempt to push you into buying one of their CLCs. They and EK are masters of the "if you want this, you have to buy our XYZ too" marketing. It's funny that you used "suckers", because I have been saying that Corsair is a sucker play for 10+ years. Caused quite the stir when I said it in a published review. Owner of the site pulled the review same day when he got an email from them intimating that we wouldn't be seeing any more of their products - but they also did that every time I gave their products an honest review and comparison.

  4. Now I'm wondering if the newer Corsair coolant is X1. The change from X5 to X8 may have been the changeover to X1 v2.

Or.....it may have been Corsair doing Corsair things, and X8 is the pond runoff from their office parking lot poured in a bottle.....

After the 660Ti's and 670 (Currently benching). Starting my conquest of the 700 series. Will be buying 770 Classy, 780 Classy and 780Ti Kingpin.

My 770 Classified may have been my favorite card that I have owned (in context, of course). It was a beast for the money.

  6. It's a PSU, not an edible dairy product. It won't spoil from sitting in the closet for years. 🤣

Theoretically, it should be in exactly the same condition as when you put it away. If it was fine then, and nothing went amiss with your storage (like spilling milk inside it), it should be fine now.

Did you buy the gimped 1/2 flow corsair D5 :sad_cry:? Where is @ciarlatanoto help here. (He loves ranting about Corsair rebranding)

Ugh, yes....totally gimped (they aren't really "gimped", they are the less expensive, less powerful oem piece that Corsair is charging full boat for from the unsuspecting) D5 for the price of a full power one. And you paint me to be a madman....but I rant with good reason! $160 for a gimped D5 and plastic tube?????? That's worth ranting over. 😆

It is possible.  I made a lot of my part decisions based on what I could get at Amazon or microcenter.  Amazon had a lot of Corsair parts available to ship quickly

And this is why you should be shopping at Performance-PCs, TitanRig, ModMyMods, etc. They are liquid cooling specialty stores, and carry components from liquid cooling specialty brands. While Corsair is trying to pretend to be one.....they aren't. You paid $115 for that same rad you could have gotten from PPCs for $85, as the Corsair is an HWL L-Series with a little sailboat sticker. Rather than paying $30 for a sailboat sticker, you could have bought a GTX for the same price you paid. 😱 Just say no to Corsair

Mayhem i would avoid till ownership transfer issues are resolved.

I could see avoiding XTR for the moment (and certainly would), but why in the world would anyone avoid X1, XT-1, Blitz, etc? I'm won't be avoiding any of these and will continue to recommend them since they are best in class.

Love the board (DDR5). I own the DDR4 version (ASUS z690-p) as well because I am waiting on a RAM RMA. The DDR4 board is crap. Limited features, no POST LED indication lights AT ALL on the mobo, RAM training problems etc... I can go on and on. I will be returning the DDR4 board. Please do your homework when buying the DDR4 version.

They quite possibly could suffer from mounting pressure issues. There are 2 possible mounting configurations that the board allows for. I chose the closer pattern and have been satisfied. The block is a direct attachment (No mounting springs). I could certainly see how putting too much torque on either configuration would lead to bowing in the middle of the coldplate causing inadequate contact. There is no mounting plate for the rear of the board.

Temperatures are definitely more than I am used to coming from a delidded 9900k. But still manageable @ 8/16 5.3GHz all core. I honestly did the RMA before I really got to do any sufficient testing.

More than happy to talk in a PM about it or maybe I should create an ADL thread...

Ugh....my bad. I had it in my mind that the Prime A came in a DDR4 version, but only the Strix A does. Have never wanted any part of the P. We will see where the prices shake out. I may just have to go with a TUF or MSI board plus a Quadro.

100% agree. One of the things I really liked on OCN back in the day was just the volume of quality postings and threads each and every day that one could engage with.

Overall, I think EHW is great, just needs more activity.

Agreed. The light activity here is a bit of a downer. On the flip side, it's all quality activity. I've been reading for 20 minutes without coming across a bad post. Need to up the quantity but retain the quality.

Fair. I will say I just picked up a 12900KF, ASUS Z690-A, DDR5 5600. I bought a new Optimus block that fits the 1700 socket well. They had it in stock and it was at my door a week after ordering.

Two questions - First, how are you liking the board? The DDR4 version is at the top of my list, and looks like a nice price/feature proposition for the needs of the system I intend. It's actually overkill in some ways, but it seems that thermal sensors are now a rarity, and buying a cheaper board and needing to add a Quadro just doesn't make much sense.

Second, I was under the impression that the Optimus blocks were suffering from inadequate mounting pressure on 1700?

I bet a lot of this is platform cost. I think Intel definitely has performance and price competitiveness with 12th gen against Zen 3, but when you take into account the market prior to 12th gen, how many people are already on AM4 platforms that might be compatible with Ryzen 5000 and they just need to upgrade, maybe update a BIOS, etc.? vs having to buy into a totally new platform with a new mobo, possibly new RAM, etc.

Secondarily, a lot of mindshare right now with AMD vs Intel built up from the past few years.

I don't know, just speculation on my part. Personally glad to see Intel back into the game. Proper competition is great. (don't look at GPUs right now 😂)

I don't think that is just speculation. I've actually been shopping for an upgrade the last couple of weeks. Between price gouging and availability, going to LGA 1700 is a chore right now. But, I'm not about to settle for a 5600X with the 12600K out there. I'm going to wait until things stabilize and 1700 blocks are actually available, but a lot of who buys this time of year is trying to satisfy the Veruca Salt "I want it now, daddy!!!!!!!!" constituent. They are going to wait until spring to get another 3fps on their games.

I imagine you already got a new phone, but if not, here's another vote for a Pixel.

I just picked up a Pixel 4a for $350 US.  I have zero interest in the Google ecosystem, but it's the closest to pure android and super easy to run an alternate OS on. The camera is excellent, and overall I would say this is my favorite phone since I retired my Lumia 1020.  Even though I have fairly large hands, giant phones drive me nuts.  It's nice to have a compact device again, even if we'll never see a proper aspect ratio on a phone again. 15:9 ftw :classic_cool:

My wife got the 4a on release to replace her 2. Once she got used to the gestures, she absolutely loves it. The Pixel camera really is fantastic. Yes, the hardware end is getting long in the tooth, but the software and processing side of it is still steps ahead of the competition in my eyes. And even if you are not in the Google ecosystem, the way the OS is done is just beautifully intuitive.

That said, I want to point out that I'm in the US, and on Verizon, so I haven't been able to play with the One Plus/Redmi/Xiaomi/etc phones that seem to have so much more going for them than US offerings.

I did check out the Pixel range but didn't fine the spec to price ratio that enticing. I did however find the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G which is a little more expensive, but for the price is an impressive spec https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_10t_pro_5g-ampp-10437.php

I've had Pixels and Samsungs simultaneously the last few years, since I have a personal and company issued phone. While the Pixels don't spec out as well in terms of hardware, if you are in the Google ecosystem, there is nothing like it in terms of experience. It's just so incredibly well integrated and convenient. And, yeah, the camera lives up to the hype. As for as the hardware, it isn't that far off that it's even noticeable in real world usage, unless your real world usage is based on running Geekbenck 24/7. I couldn't imagine using anything else at this point. I'm probably going to grab a Pixel 5 on black Friday.
