The Redmond giant says it will always allow competing app stores to operate on Windows alongside the Windows Store. Developers are free to choose their business model and in-app payments system, including cases where content is streamed from the cloud. Apple is notorious for making this very difficult on the App Store, where game streaming services such as xCloud and Stadia would have to go through the trouble of submitting individual games for review and use Apple's in-app payment system.

    Shots fired.

On a real note, even though Microsoft has a much smaller app store, I think they're seen today as a much more mature company than apple or Google and they still enjoy the luxury of being able to set the example and define the rules for certain market practices. Hoping this turns into one of those situations.

  2. What kind of heatsink do you have?

Start by running a stability test like prime95 and checking your temps to see what kind of headroom you have. If you have headroom, it should be pretty easy to get to 5ghz or close on your CPU.

Looks like your ram is at 2933mhz instead of 3000mhz.

Was the admin that wrote all the cool stuff (read: GUI menus, manual terrain gain, multi server proxies and chat, etc) at the end actually, but yes, I remember you and all the interesting drama we all caused for Enterprise back in the day, and taking the Builder+ test.

I still dabble, but not the the extent it once was. Figured I'd throw up a GT:NH server and see if anyone actually bites. If not, ah well, still get to play with new stuff. I also offered to help @axipher with his server admin side if he wanted it, but I'm not trying to get back into it as deep as before. I regret nothing, but it was work.

Sure was. Lots of lessons learned about group dynamics too, like things to avoid. Def got too lax with the control of the server, allowing too many people to make uncoordinated changes and thus breaking plugins. It would be interesting to have an MC server that was just paid hosting with a dedicated site to eliminate the complexity of hosting for all the types of people who used to play again. The things they did with redstone were really impressive.

Not that I'd ever want to deal with all that drama again. If I were to do it over, so many more ppl would have just been perma banned. We were way to forgiving in some cases where people were obviously trying to get away with doing as much damage as they could, or hijacking control for themselves.

Lawmakers in the UK have urged the country to speed up the removal of Huawei’s equipment from its 5G mobile infrastructure. The UK’s Defense Committee has published a lengthy report, urging the government to look if the ban can be pushed from 2027 to 2025. Officials say that there is “clear evidence” of collusion “between the company and the Chinese Communist Party apparatus.” It also recommends that other nations work together to rebuild the information technology manufacturing capacity that was lost when so much of this industry was originally outsourced to China.

The report begins by listing the usual attack lines against the company, including founder Ren Zhengfei’s Communist Party membership and work for the People’s Liberation Army. (Something that Huawei has long since claimed are not relevant to his entrepreneurship.). It adds that, as a Chinese company, it could be asked to conduct espionage in compliance with the country’s 2017 National Intelligence Law. And that while the UK’s National Cyber Security Center had “not seen any specific evidence” of hostile acts, its “standing assumption” is that Huawei will insert backdoors into its products. Previous reports have pointed out flaws in Huawei’s engineering that, while not intentional backdoors, could be used in that manner.

Looks like things are getting worse for Huawei. Seems like this will be a growing trend for Chinese tech companies given the rules they are forced to abide by.

IBM is spinning off a significant part of its business to focus on new opportunities in hybrid cloud growth, the company announced on Thursday.

The IT services unit of IBM's Global Technology Services business will become a separate public company. It represents a major departure from IBM's previous priorities and one of the boldest moves in the company's more-than-a-century-long history.

IBM's managed infrastructure services business represented nearly a quarter of IBM's revenue last year. But IBM believes its future lies in the hybrid cloud -- a technical setup wherein companies may use multiple clouds in addition to their own on-premises servers. IBM's platform gives companies tools to more easily navigate between those various environments.

New CEO Arvind Krishna made the hybrid cloud the focus when he took the reins from former CEO Ginni Rometty earlier this year. IBM has made large investments in cloud computing over the past several years. In 2019, IBM acquired RedHat for $34 billion. The company says the spinoff will grant IBM the opportunity to be "laser-focused on the $1 trillion hybrid cloud opportunity."

Investors liked the news, sending shares of IBM up 5% Thursday.

This is a pretty big business move for a company like IBM. I'd imagine people will be lining up to buy stock in the new company when it launches.

The low-core box? Hyper-modded MC server. Need every scrap of ST I can get but don't wanna drop much on it.

Looks like a 5900X to replace my 3900X, and then maybe just drop this 3900X in the server and turn off the "bad" CCXs if I cant find a buyer. Maybe some new RAM since my board is QVL'd for 4700 kits if the new CPU's IF can handle it. The 4k APUs have me hopeful.

You still doing MC server stuff? Weren't you one of the mods on the OCN-MC server? I still have the map files for that somewhere..

  7. When I worked at Digital Storm, they had a guy who managed the ebay account and sold excess parts or used parts there, or whatever else and they also used a totally different name for that and didn't connect their ebay account to Digital Storm in any obvious way, though the difference there was that Digital Storm is basically just a reseller anyway. That place was always kinda shady on the internal side on things with pretty terrible management caused by an over intrusive father to the main owner... family run business.

I could easily see MSI doing the exact same type of thing, but since they actually make the product it's clearly much worse, though I can't think of any legal issue with it.

In answer to a question about DLSS advanced that might be expected the Nvidia exec said that the DLSS SDK 2.1 update is out now and has three major updates, as follows:

    • New ultra performance mode for 8K gaming. Delivers 8K gaming on GeForce RTX 3090 with a new 9x scaling option.
    • VR support. DLSS is now supported for VR titles.
    • Dynamic resolution support. The input buffer can change dimensions from frame to frame while the output size remains fixed. If the rendering engine supports dynamic resolution, DLSS can be used to perform the required upscale to the display resolution.

On the topic of VR support, the RoadtoVR website reckons DLSS 2.1 "could mean substantially better looking VR games that still achieve the necessary framerate," (of 80 to 90fps). In the case of a high-end HMD like the Valve Index (which supports up to 144Hz), we could see the benefits in significantly reduced latency.

On RTX 30 launch day we were teased by the GeForce RTX 3090 being the world's first 8K 60fps gaming graphics card. The Q&A hints that DLSS 2.1 will leverage an ultra-performance mode to help this feat be realised, using a new 9x scaling option.

The release date for DLSS 2.1 for consumers hasn't been set publicly but it is expected to be implemented in launch drivers for the RTX 30 graphics cards and be compatible with RTX 20 GPUs too.

Pretty happy by what I see from the marketing, but as always will wait to see the actual reviews and benchmarks and see if it shapes up. That said, AMD seemed to have a lot of bravado in this presentation. Architecturally, glad to see 8 cores unified on a single CCX.

I was ok with the $50 price hikes, but them getting rid of or at least not announcing a replacement for the 3700X for instance does raise the price of entry into R7 more than the $50 hike. 3700X was $329 at launch and the 5800X being the only R7 entry at launch with $449 price makes it more like a $120 hike into that class of CPU. It makes sense from a business standpoint since the 3700X ate into 3800X sales I am sure, but still is a little disappointing as a consumer where all things being close enough, the lower cost part would probably win my money.

Without a 5700X, it wouldn't be a stretch to think AMD might be hoping people say what's another $100 and go for the 5900X over the 5800X. That would be a much harder choice with a $349-$379 5700X.

Yea I hope they release a lower clocked version more in line with the 3700x. That cpu was really at the sweet spot in terms of price and performance.

  10. I honestly wouldn't mind a banner ad or two, those aren't so bad. The kind of stuff vertical scope is doing with ads is super annoying, trying to make ads look like forum posts and putting them in the middle of threads and stuff like that. As long as the ads stay simple and not become so intrusive, it's not a big deal to me.

I'm gonna sign up for a premium account later when I'm near my computer. Def want to help support all this effort!

In Cinebench R20 single thread, AMD is claiming the Ryzen 9 5900X will hit a score of 631 making it the first desktop processor to hit the 600 point mark. That's with the IPC improvements and the slight clock speed jump to 4.8 GHz turbo. Previously AMD would get around 530 in this benchmark with the 3950X, which means we could be seeing a 100 point or 19% performance improvement, which is right on what AMD has said should be the average IPC gain. Intel’s Core i9-10900K in our testing scored 551, so this would make the 5900X 15% faster.

Looks like AMD is about to take the performance crown! Lots more details in the source, no benchmarks yet though.

I thought about waiting this out till Zen 4 or whatever next platform supposedly has DDR5 support. But I am struggling running newer games at 1440p on my current 4790k / 980 platform so I think I'll just bite the bullet with Zen 3 and RDNA2/Ampere. Besides it will be expensive when it first releases, so I am ok not being on that bleeding edge.

Yea you're still on ddr3 so it would be tough to wait that long.

The Korean semiconductor giant announced back on November 28, 2018, the development of the world's first 16 Gigabit (Gb) DDR5 DRAM. The company says its DDR5 supports speeds between 4,800 MHz and 5,600 MHz, making it around 1.8 times faster than most standard, non-overclocked DDR4 kits.

Might try to make this 7700k last me until DDR5 hits consumers PCs...

Reluctantly, that comment regarding the OCN community in the other thread did actually hit home. It's not all about money and selling our replies to advertising networks(for those that haven't disabled all that crap by default). Its about getting help and helping others with pushing our hardware to the limit and only occasionally breaking it. Without OCN I wouldn't have dared to delid my 3770k add LM to it and run it comfortably at 5Ghz ?

I think your referring to my comment. Glad you found it insightful/applicable. Looks like a lot of people are figuring that out.

  15. The videos section is really cool. I could see that being a great place to discuss digital foundry videos and the likes. This day and age, it's hard to get around the fact that videos are replacing quotable news articles to some extent. I like the layout of the videos section and I think it would make a really good addition to the front page underneath the new/news posts as a supplement to the news in the form of informative videos. There would have to be rules about posting only tech info videos but that seems pretty doable.

A more immediate suggestion would be to allow more text to fit in the thread titles on the front page. As is, the text is cut off a bit too soon.

  16. This is exactly what a site like this should be. Great job to Enterprise and anyone else involved! I'm sure this site will attract many from the old site over time, as well as new members. Really glad to see the spirit of things is living on here.

I really like the new video section. Do you plan to add that to the frontpage in some form? if so I would suggest putting it under the new/news posts.
