  1. Before this next one, a backstory: a buddy of mine and I were listening to stoner fm radio back in the early 70s when everyone suspected anyone who listened to stoner fm radio of being stoned. Anyway, my buddy had a fairly elaborate hi fi system back then and we were zoning out in front of a pair of his huge Klipsch Horns--like those in the blown away ads they used to air--when all of a sudden it got really quiet. Then "The Dark" started playing in an intriguing sort of way, my buddy turned up the volume a bit, and we became captivated by it. By the time the narrator (Arch Oboler) was finished telling the story, we were totally mesmerized. Then, without warning, that clashing noise at the end (the loudest symbols possible) burst out of the speakers sounding like the volume had been turned up 1200%, perhaps by the dj who was playing the piece at the time.

    All we could do was let out a couple of long drawn out loud "wowwwwwwwws."

    I eventually moved on to other stuff, my buddy not so much. I came across his obit a few years back and learned he died in 2016.  We had some good times together, but lost touch with each other when he shipped out to Thailand while I went to Spain.

  2. Again, given the plethora of browser/user related combinations, all of you want to keep in mind that what you see and how things work browser-wise for each of you will depend on an array of things. For instance, I can make things work the ways you are experiencing them by adjusting options that are available to me as a signed in user with a premium subscription.

    It would also do well to keep in mind that this site is technically a combination of two separately managed  (unique), but somewhat integrated instances of web content (the Invision forum side of the site and the WordPress side for the review content).

    Anyway, in what follows (and to illustrate a few points), I'm using the current version of Firefox on Win 11, with my premium user options set to allow the display of the carousel and side nav bar when viewing the forum side of the site:

    Then, when I opt to hide the sidebar and the slider blocks on the "Home" page, a setting which only really impacts the Invision forum side of things:

    premiumoptions.png.3b247d286a6df00a31fc4fd5fa311a8a.png

    I get what follows:

    2024-01-26_23-24-45.thumb.png.cc59701ddcb19bbbf954de5328023c24.png

    The confusion is actually more related to how each half of the site's linked logos and "Home" top nav menu items are set up; the use of "Home" in each top menu bar (and the two logos, each respectively assigned its own unique link), being the important distinction.

    That said, I used to have a WordPress business site that also provided access to an SMF (Simple Machines Forum) forum in a subdomain; the header and logos of each half of the site cleared spelling out which was which (e.g., X Site "Home" vs. the X Site "Forum"), as well as nav menu items that received a similar treatment (e.g., X Site "Home" vs. the X Site "Forum"). That way, users could easily go back and forth between the two halves of the site and know just where they were at.

    Finally, a few links that some might find relevant:

  3. Also, as a retired albeit fairly experienced web dev/designer, the note that follows might be useful as well (fwiw):

    Note: given the wide array of available browsers/viewport sizes/etc. (e.g., mobile vs. desktop; different screen sizes, portrait vs. landscape, etc.) that are likely in use, when reporting content related issues/problems, it'd be a lot more helpful if those reports included any additional relevant info that can be provided.

    A shortlist follows:

    • the name of the browser used when the issue was noted (e.g., firefox vs. chrome, vs edge, etc.);
    • if applicable, desktop vs laptop, screen size., operating system, etc.;
    • if applicable, mobile phone/tablet make and model; whether viewing in portrait or landscape, etc.;
    • and whether you tried to confirm the issue could be repeated using a different browser/hardware/os, etc.

  4. ugh, sad news, another old fav gone with the wind:

    VARIETY.COM

    Melanie, the singer who performed at Woodstock and had pop hits with 'Brand New Key' and 'Lay Down,' has died at age 76.

    R.I.P. Melanie.

    Spoiler

    Seems like a little piece of something in me dies with each one that passes; or as another long gone old fav might say were he still here today, listen to them, children of the night. What music they make...

    music was the life..., 'Renfrow.'

  5. Quote

    A prominent repair channel on YouTube is warning prospective graphics card buyers that a customer sent in an Amazon-purchased GeForce RTX 4090 which turned out to be a very bad fake. The video, shared by Tony from North West Repair (NWR), underlines the adage ‘buyer beware’ with a bright neon marker. What his customer thought was probably a quick repair job on a $2,000 card turned out to be a ‘no fix’ scam made from a cobbled-together and motley mix of components, including a "fried" RTX 4080 GPU and PCB. The graphics card also had a host of other issues that pointed to a badly cobbled-together FrankenGPU.

    This is pututu from [H]ard|OCP team. Just registered here. Looking forward for this upcoming friendly competition once a year. This year will be exciting as we have 5 teams participating. In the previous four, it was just [H] vs TAAT but we decided to invite a few more teams and see how it goes this year. It's only 7-day event, once a year but I hope we all can have fun poking at other teams and some trash talks. Get more folders on board and see which team can come up on top.🏋️‍♂️

    It's a good time to introduce new members to folding@home or wake up some sleepy folders once a year. Just spread the word around.

    In case why this is called BigAdv EOL challenge, I think most of you know what it is. It just happened that FAH BigAdv program ended on Jan 31st. It has good and mostly bad memories/experiences for some very long time folders but it is just a date that happens to be associated with FAH.

    Welcome to EHW, and thanks for the why's behind the BigAdv EOL challenge 🙂

    For the uninformed--also see: Big Advanced, which details what sort of work units they were.

  7. Perhaps, but I went with Tidal Hi-Fi Plus a few years back. It provides better quality streams than Spotify. They also give me a big discount because of my military service.

    Some ethnic stuff

    There is an interesting doc, not sure if on a streaming service or youtube, but it went into details how native species within the contamination zone have spread radiation all across Europe. One of the examples was reindeer / deer, which I believe migrate from Ukraine to Finland. Don't quote me on that but the whole story was rather interesting. E.g.,

    WWW.WIRED.COM

    Long after the radiation that blanketed Europe dispersed, herders in Norway are living with the effects of the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history.

    Yeah, there's plenty of that sort of content available via the 'net.

  9. With reference to a release scheduled later this year, specifically S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl (which I have been looking forward to)...

    ...so i feel like i've been growing a third eye in my gut lately (note: it's not a zit--i tried squeezing it, it wouldn't pop); and I've been re-watching the HBO series Chernobyl, which I find fascinating each time I re-watch it; not only because it's very well done, but also because I was actually in the relative vicinity when the reactor blew its top back in 1986 (I was stationed at Leipheim, GE; and lived off-base in a berg called Burgau, GE--see the map that follows below the video).

    Anyway, I do recall the neighbors cautioning us about eating things like locally sourced venison and/or locally grown vegetables; and I've always wondered if I'd eventually suffer any ill effects as a result of the incident (like growing a third eye in my gut).

    ...lastly, a map of where I was when the Cesium 137 was falling out of the sky follows, accompanied by a color coded list of just how much ground level radiation collected in the various areas over the period of the first year following the catastrophe:

    If anything, I think it's strange that there are such strong opinions about 1 shirt vs a couple.

    it's not a one shirt vs. a couple of t-shirts argument; rather, it's about brand identity. nobody said you couldn't have (e.g) different colored t-shirts.

    A plain logo is not my style.

    yeah, I get that.
