what happens when you format/try to format?

CMD -> diskpart -> list disk -> select disk # (whatever it is)

CMD -> list volume -> select volume # (whatever the "1862" GB volume is) -> attributes volume clear hidden

then try to format (CMD -> diskpart -> list disk -> select disk # -> clean -> create partition primary -> format fs=ntfs) and then delete the array in the BIOS?

    You beat me to it.

I still check out OCN from time to time and not being able to comment has really helped me realized why I got banned. The amount of BS and people talking like experts but sprouting total nonsense is too much for me not to call it out. I just don't have the vocabulary to not resort to name calling.

I really feel like an old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

I'm reading a thread on there atm and can't help but yell at my screen. 🤬

Dude I know what you mean. I went to a techsupport forum and people are just idiots there too. There is no "experts" on OCN anymore. Just people spewing *. I went over to TechPowerUp and LinusTechTips afterward.

    History lesson time lol.

The initial V-bulletin migration honestly wasn't what damaged OCN. I mean sure, as with any change there was frustration and some losses. Huddler (the platform OCN moved to) was actually decent and the owners were community focused and were working with myself and the other management to bring back any lost functionality and fix bugs. They were actually exceptionally quick on fixing things and making adjustments. I cannot really find much fault with them. We were making some great progress.

    Then came our troubles.

Huddler became EOL as a platform. It was a proprietary software that was no longer going to maintained. Bugger ! Huddler was then purchased and we became part of the Wikia group. This didn't mean a platform change....but we did see stagnation as dev work etc had come to a standstill.

Ironically it was only a short time after that Wikia re-shuffled their company portfolio and decided that tech forums such as ourselves were no longer a good fit....Sigh.

    Here comes ANOTHER move.

OCN was the sold to Verticalscope which was running its portfolio on...get this, the same super old version of V-bulletin we initially migrated away from. This meant OCN was migrated back to V-bulletin, but with that meant we lost EVERYTHING. All the features we had managed to get back thus far with Huddler...poof gone.

This is were you would have started to see the mass exodus of users and slow down on OCN. To make matters worse, we couldn't get much work done to restore OCN after the move to Verticalscope as they were already planning to mass move their entire portfolio to a custom fork of Xenforo.

So we stagnated for ages, with nothing unique that made OCN what it was, that was the REAL damage. We eventually migrated to Xenforo which is the OCN of today. The rest you can figure out (I cannot go into details)

I left sometime in 2018 and haven't really been back since. The new forum is great and all but I barely see any staff there. I see old faces but the place is not the same. And god what a mess with everything. Enterpise, how have you managed to stay as admin for all this time? I would have been so frustrated and said fuckit.

  4. Hello everyone. I am Lord Xeb of OCN. Been around on OCN since 2009 and was rather active for a time. Then I got old and lurk more these days. But hey, good to see a lot of old faces around here. This place is small but there is an ass ton of experience amongst everyone (including myself :D). Anyways, glad to be around. Also, if you see Pickles Von Brine on TechPowerUp or Linus Tech Tips that is me. There is a bit of a long story on that name. 😅

That's pretty cool. You must like the movie Twister. There's some guys that did that kind of thing in real life.

You have no idea. I went through 3 VHS tapes as a kid.  Been fascinated and sometimes obsessed with weather since I was a kid.

  6. My other hobby would be weather. If things had worked out I would be a weatherman right now. Like seriously, there are very few things in this world that make me as excited as weather, particularly extreme weather like tornadoes, super cells, hurricanes, derechos, large hail or extreme amounts of lightning, etc. I would honestly have stayed in school long enough to get a PhD with a focus on tornadogenesis and exactly how they form. Ground up or top down.

Especially since one of the biggest things you need for tornadoes are large amounts of shear and enough energy to create a super cell. Though they can also form along squall lines like an MCS (mesoscale convective system) or a QLCS (quasi linear convective system). Particularly during derecho events. Though most of those are not strong and short lived.

I digress. You can get tornadoes from events like in low CAPE (convective available potential energy) high shear event, or during very high cape events with moderate shear. You can even get it when there is a * ton of cape but not a lot of shear. The explosive updrafts from the extremely buoyant air make up for the lack of shear.

a note on cape. CAPE is how much energy the atmosphere has per kg of air measured in Joules/kg. You need good amount of shear and around 1000-1500 cape for a super cell that can produce a tornado. Maybe 500-1000 in a low cape high shear event.

Though during a high cape event (2000+ cape though I have seen cape as high as 7000-8000 which is an absolutely stupid amount of energy. Like seriously, the difference between 1500 cape and 7000 is like an engine with 250hp vs a dragster and over 3000hp) you can get a situation where there are very high dew points, lots of daytime heating and a cap event (basically a layer of stable air over top of unstable air keeping the bottom layer from rising/convetcting) can keep things stable. However, as the daytime heating and updrafts form you can get a cap inversion to occur as the updrafts upset the “cap”. Though in this situation the cap is very strong. Basically like putting a cork into a champagne bottle. However, as daytime heating occurs and then things approach night you can eroding of this cap layer causing an inversion. With a little shear, bit of helicity and a cold cold front or some other upper air current and boom, explosive thunderstorm developement. Though these kinds situations can also lead to a dreaded derecho event too. Derechos are scary as hell and can do a hell of a lot more damage.

helicity in the atmosphere is the amount of spin in an updraft.

    anyways yeah. Weather 😅

a few months ago I needed more storage for my server and was considering some 8TB Intel P4510s. for my array size they were a "bit" out of my price range though :sad-smile:

Those can get pricy that is for sure!

I actually had it all planned out originally.  I was going to put an 8TB U.2 drive via adapter into my rear M.2 PCIe 3.0 slot, since there's already ample room behind most cases to fit a 2.5" SSD, usually behind the board anyway.  An adapter and U.2 card should velcro right in behind the mobo tray on most modern cases I'd wager.  As you mentioned too, some boards have the adapters built in (I don't think mine does).  The adapter point is only really relevant if you don't have space behind the mobo tray to hide something like that.  I mean its still a point, but yeah.....

Cost, like you mentioned was more of a factor.  I had already splurged on 2TB 2.5" drives for my last rig, had 3 of them in RAID0 and a 4th in my unused laptop.  So I just pulled those out in favor of spinny rust in their place, and used what I had.  Only reason I had so many 2TB 2.5" drives was again, cost.  When they were selling for $150-160 a pop for the 2TB BX500's, I couldn't help myself.  $500+ on a single drive is harder to do than 4x $150, even if the cost difference is more total.

Just my own 2 cents / unasked back story.  TLDR:  You're right, but longer.

It was a good plan and I hear ya on the price. Though getting 4 2TB BX500 for that price is a no brainer.

My board doesn't have an adapter I just ordered a PCIe to u.2 adapter. Works well no issues. Though I could have gotten a PCIe to an 8468 or whatever adapter, ran the cable to a my U.2 in a drive cage or something. Simplier to just plug it in a slot. But meh.

    1 hour ago, Avacado said:

I have never personally used any U.2 drives re. cost. Most of the boards that I run have adapters built in and would not require an adapter.

Startech makes adapters >:D Honestly it is kinda silly having one but it was a good price and cheaper than getting a 4TB nvme drive at the time. Now you can get 8TB NVME u.2 drives for about 500 on ebay so not bad.

I was debating on grabbing an 8TB U.2 actually.  I settled on just re-using my 4x 2TB 2.5" drives I already had laying around instead, but grabbing an 8TB drive is still on my list of things to get.

They are pretty good. I think it is 3200/2400 for performance and 1DWPD endurance. Not bad for 500

  9. Hey everyone,

Has anyone used these drives for mass storage? I bought a sandisk skyhawk a couple of years ago and it has served me well. Plus, they have awesome endurance.

I just saw some 8tbs u.2 drives for about 500 on eBay. They also have pretty good performance.  I paid that 2-3 years ago for my 4tb. 😄

the only downside is they need a pcie slot or an adapter and take up more space than a traditional 2.5.

    Hey, welcome over to EHW!

Are you talking about one of these?

The Alphacool Eiswolf 2 is the first full cover GPU AIO waterblock from Alphacool. It is based on the Alphacool GPX Eisblock Aurora GPX water block, a pump unit and a 360mm NexXxoS ST30 full copper radiator...

Hey thanks man! Enterprise told me about this place. Been over on OCN for a long time (over a decade).  And yes that is what I am talking about!

That's gotta be it.  I just did a search on Amazon, looks like they have one for just about every top tier card too.  Now LordXeb here has me wondering the same question, to buy one for my 6900XT or not.........

Note:  I've never tried one of these AIO's.

With that said, Alphacool has been around for a long time.  AIO's have been increasingly getting better and better over time since the first H50's hit store shelves.  I'm happily running an AIO on my CPU.  I see these as a fancier, higher end version of an old school Thermalright or Arctic Accelero.  Better than the cooling you'd get stock (assuming you piece it together, get a reference block for a reference card for example).  But not QUITE as good of performance as you'd get with a proper full water loop.  Granted, with modern AIO's, you might get pretty close to proper loop temps too anyway.

My 2 cents on it, if it helps at all. 🙂

Hey pioneer! Good to see you here! Long time no see. Yeah that is what I was thinkingZ also I have gotten into the making my system as quiet as possible. The stock cooler on the ultra is.. a little loud for my taste. That said I do like the aio and easily expandable nature of their systems. Though if I go full into water I would get a 360 and a 420 rad. Overkill but why not?

    Welcome to the community.

Nothing wrong with Acool AIO's. What card are you considering running one on?

Oh I forgot to put that in my bios. I have an evga 3080 ti ftw3 ultra.

2 hours ago, Sir Beregond said:

I agree. Look like one of their normal full-cover blocks (I have an Alphacool 3080 FE block on my 3080 Ti FE and it works excellently - though I'm open loop) plumbed up as an AIO. Looks like would work fine.

I was thinking the same. Also it isn’t like I can’t reuse their rads and stuff.

there's a few people in the 3080 Ti thread on OCN with them. I was considering one when I first bought my 3080 Ti but never pulled the trigger on one.

Thanks for letting me know! Also, how you been pook? Haven’t been on OCN in a bit.
