Can't wait to start GPU folding. I've been Folding for about 20 years (low User ID) and got to top 15,000 or so back when everyone was CPU folding. Had to install the client in 2 Windows folders for dual core CPUs since the client didn't support multi-core or multi-thread back then. Leaning towards getting a PNY RTX A2000 6 GB from Amazon since it's a 75 Watt slot-powered slim GPU. It'll fit in my Dell OptiPlex 3050 with i5 4c/4t Kaby Lake. Someday I'll have a sick 42U server cabinet with 4U servers with 4 flagship GPUs sucking down 1200 Watts. Someday.

That's a wrap! Fun 3-day event. I installed Debian 12 to two unused boxes just to test them for future use and used it start writing my "Linux for beginners" how-to guide for BOINC and Folding@home. Thanks for the event! (The Xeon 1230v3 (Haswell) 4c/8t with Intel stock cooler, Supermicro motherboard, Rosewill 4U chassis was going to be my 2013 FreeNAS build, but ZFS intimidated me so I put it on hold. With Folding, it heated up to 100C within seconds so I had to stop. I reapplied new thermal paste (Noctua NT-H2 and replaced the 2013 Arctic Silver 5?) and got the same results, so I think the stock Intel CPU fan just sucks. The Dell OptiPlex with 4c/4t i5 Ivy Bridge worked great, and it's heating up the basement to keep the water pipes from freezing. I'll run it a couple months until I can sell it.

If I remember correctly in the 2023 96-hour event, at least one of the sponsors (EVGA) shipped prizes out directly to the winners, absorbing the shipping cost and logistics of EHW Staff in shipping prizes. Is it too much of an ask for potential sponsors to do that? Or if not, I guess I'd rather have a big box of prizes bulk shipped to EHW than to not have a sponsor, if push comes to shove. Just would be ideal if the vendor did the shipping. Re: Psychology, I get that too. I learned about this forum via the F@H Discord community and joined, and it seems like a friendly community with non-existent douches. There's a few other hardware communities that... feel like teenage fighting and egos (plus the spelling and grammar errors turn me off). Point is: EHW does seem like a potential "home forum" for me, as I'm not currently active anywhere on the Internet. (Also not currently splurging on new desktop builds until the income/life situation gets normalized again). I do have 2024 plans for a 24U server rack, and I've been on a new pfSense build for 6 months. Soon will build out multiple XCP-ng servers. [i]Eventually[/i] (once I can afford the hardware and power bill), I'd like to go nuts on a 4U GPU folding farm beast, so EHW seems like a good community where I'd be accepted (and a place to share homelab/server porn). I'm rambling. If push comes to shove as a newbie here, I can do $10, but any more at this time is a bit much for my life situation. But also only if there's no legal issues with paying for prizes or calling it a raffle, etc. Instead of a $10 for entry, could it be a $10 if the winner wants to claim their prize? I'm trying to think of what's fair vs. what would get the most participation and fun factor to attract new people to the EHW community. Asking a complete outsider to donate perhaps leaves a poor first impression to EHW, but I *do* understand the significant personal expense in shipping out prizes if a sponsor bulk ships a box of prizes. What's the right balance? I think 96 hours (4 days) or 120 hours (5 days) are a good sweet spot for annual contest. Agree with earlier in the year (e.g. February) over spring. I'm in the Southeast USA currently, and it gets to summer temps pretty fast + summer electricity rates.

This one's a Dell OptiPlex 3050 Minitower chassis (clearance special on DellRefurbished.com) so full height cards accepted. And whoa, even a 1050Ti might be a good workhorse/space heater. I can PayPal a few bones for the cheapest shipping or whatever. CPU is i5-7500 (Kaby Lake) @ 3.4 GHz base clock. 4 core/4 thread. Decent space heater. It's my budget gaming PC build for when I get a GPU... Should be fine for old games, Minecraft, Valorant (ugh... their Vanguard anti-cheat rootkit is creepy and that's why I have all gaming on a separate PC). I have a Seasonic ATX PSU, 360 Watts, probably 80+ Gold just sitting around from my old pfSense build. Dell switched from standard ATX power supplies about 5 years ago so I'd maybe have to drill new holes or just...duct tape it and avoid eye contact haha. I wonder if anyone here's got a nice rackmount server full of GPUs for Folding@home. If I had a spare $10-15k to blow and a separate household circuit, I'd build a beast of a rig. Kind of wanna get a 220Volt setup in the future house instead of dealing with 120 Volt 15 Amp or 20 Amp circuits for the "data center" / home lab.

I'm trying to find a good, reliable source for an Nvidia RTX A2000 since it uses 75 Watt bus power and doesn't need aux power, which this Dell OptiPlex PSU doesn't have.

With some of these whopper 24 hour work units, if I get two of those, I may not be able to meet the 10 WU minimum in 48 hours. I'll have 4 boxes CPU folding. I might see if I can spin up an old server and maybe a laptop just to be safe. Still looking forward to this contest! I did the 96-hour one and it was fun.

IN "dahoff" I'm really grateful for the new bladeless fan design. My last EXTREME cooling solution killed a few cats and the crested gecko and I haven't finished getting over their loss.
