The software is easy, the mod is not too complicated and it looks better than pot-meters on the pcb. I am planning to do the same mod on my next project, and I hope to go into more detail there.
It was more like a stinky fizzle than a boom....

Rockitcool kit, yes. Usually heat it up to 60-70c, just enough to help soften the adhesive border. It's not meant to soften the solder at that temp.
