If I get eight hours of sleep, I'm doing pretty well. Meanwhile, a microscopic arctic animal got 24,000 years worth and came out just fine on the other side. A new study details the remarkable journey of a bdelloid rotifer, a miniscule freshwater critter that survived for millennia in the permafrost of Siberia.

...the Canadian Wood Frog can do it for a single arctic winter, not to mention the Woolly Bear Moth-  but 24,000 yrs - now that puts even Rip van Winkle to shame. But more seriously, who knows what nasty surprises (including bacteria and viruses) await thawing via global warming's impact on permafrost ?
