Will the AMD Radeon RX 6400 ever receive AMD VCE support?

 

I want to buy one but I require AMD VCE support for recording gameplay & encoding video with software etc.  However, AMD says its all unsupported.  Do you think people got it working or will they release it in driver updates or some such?

Does the GPU support hardware accelerated encoding, read some conversation that eludes to it not supporting it.

Both the 6400 and the 6500 XT were laptop chips meant for APU's repurposed for desktop. I imagine not.

If encoding/decoding is of value to you, perhaps get an AMD GPU that has hardware acceleration for these tasks.

Yeah. AMD really didn't do anyone any favors with the 6400 and 6500 XT missing features like this. Seemed like a last minute decision to put something, anything on the market at that price point. These are definitely not really meant to be desktop GPUs and it shows.

 

Maybe see if there are any 5500 XT low profile cards around. Don't quote me on it, but I think these support VCE.

Yeah I don't think AMD has made a low profile card since the RX 560.  That was the best AMD could offer for low profile cards for a long time.  Now they finally have something to compete with the GTX 1650 lp, but I'm sure the GTX 1650 at least has NVENC?

Correct, a 1650 would have NVENC support. I believe you will have to doublecheck models for the 1650 as I believe the first ones used the Volta encoder whereas later ones used Turing, if that matters to you.

True, you could consider the Quadro P620 which is a low profile card of the Same generation and support two simultaneous NVENC streams.

OK, well just giving you some options. Personally I think the fact that AMD released the 6400 and 6500 XT in the form they took, missing the features they do, at the price points they are, was rather disappointing. Parts that never meant to be desktop cards sold as such and sold for much higher than they really deserve.

 

I'm not sure you are going to get what you want from AMD at that price tier - i.e. low-profile with encoding support. 6400 and 6500 XT simply don't have it.

 

The 6600 would probably work for you, but I'm not sure they come in low-profile. Is there a reason you couldn't do a non-low profile card?

I just need something without external power connector for this one system I have which doesn't have too great of a power supply.

 

By the way, thank you everyone for the help.

 

The RX 6400 is so promising with it's good performance at 1080p, better than the RX 550 & 560 LP cards because of 32 ROPs & 48 TMUs.  Although the RX 560 LP has 16 ROPs & 64 TMUs, the RX 6400 because of it's clock & architecture surpasses it by great lengths.

 

Yeah I'm getting my RX 6600 XT back from Gigabyte RMA soon & I'll get to use that but I'll need to see if it will post video on a AMD A6-3670K system & my AMD Opteron 4386 system as well.

I think I'll wait to upgrade my main rig after they release AMD RX 7000 series this December.
