Microsoft adds ChatGPT to Bing

"The race starts today," Microsoft boss Satya Nadella said.

Developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, ChatGPT uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to search requests.

"This technology will reshape pretty much every software category that we know," he said.

Bing will now respond to search queries with more detailed answers - not just links to websites.

Users are also able to chat with the bot to better tailor their queries. More contextual answers will be added on the right hand side of a search page.

The new Bing search engine will be live right away - with a limited number of searches for each person.

The announcement comes a day after Google revealed details of its own new chatbot, Bard.

Both companies are scrambling to get their products to market.

In a note to investors after the announcement, analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said he thought that Microsoft's investment would "massively boost" the firm's ability to compete.

"This is just the first step on the AI front ... as [the] AI arms race takes place among Big Tech," he said.

  • UltraMega changed the title to Microsoft adds ChatGPT to Bing

I had to watch a video of this to grasp what exactly this means. It does look pretty interesting. Basically, the AI can write whole new articles to answer your questions out of compiled information from multiple sources. Seems like a great way to avoid adds too, because you don't have to visit ten different sites to get all the information; ChatGPT will do that for you and just show you the information, kinda like a super advanced reading mode.

I wonder how this will impact school assignments if you can ask Bing (and I'm sure Google soon enough) an essay style prompt question and get a full essay back right away.

ChatGPT is designed to have some randomness in how it answers questions.  Randomness is good for conversations, not for technical information.  It's neat that this version sites sources, that's very important for discerning good/bad information.

The overall effect on webpages and ads could shake the foundations of the internet.  Then again, so could adblock (like Ublock Origin), which for some reason I can't understand, most people don't use.

ChatGPT is great. Every time I use it, it answers with 404 network error.

...you are right about shaking the foundations - not only of the internet, but at the end of the day almost any media, knowledge store and really, any digital stream (information, entertainment...).

I am getting involved in an AI joint-venture project, and the whole topic of hidden layers, weights and bias (meant in their respective AI technical context) has some impact on randomness, or rather the appearance of it.  It will become so easy to manipulate folks by introducing some matrix-multiplied 'random beauty mark'...

lol, now Bing even tells people it thinks they should be dead.

I wish he would have asked it to define who he as a user is.  Bing spouts off a bunch of accusations about him and cites logs, perhaps it really has logs and those accusations could be true, they just aren't limited to him...

I feel the same as Bing about most people. I see this as a sign that Bing actually is pretty intelligent. 🤣
