Wish I had noticed that delid tools were available. I see PPCS has them in stock and I could have tossed one in on my order that should be here tomorrow.

I'm excited to see how things go with the higher core count X3D parts. I don't feel the need to pay the early adopter tax though.

The power efficiency is definitely a big win for me. We have a lot machines running in the house. Custom loops manage to keep the PCs happy but the heat still gets dumped into the room. I don't like living in a sauna. I don't mind loosing a tiny bit of performance for lower overall power consumption.

Speaking of power consumption, below (time-stamped) is a nice power-efficiency graph by GN that includes the just-arrived 7900X3D.

Speaking of power and 'house heaters', that is ironically where the RTX 4090 shines - while mine has a max vbios of 671W (1000 W optional), it typically is set to 80% PL in gaming and runs rings around the RTX 3090 at the same 400 W restriction in terms of fps and low 1% - it is just that much more efficient. FYI, the whole loop has 1320x63 rad space, is dead quiet even at max everything and takes in fresh air from a window and actually helps to warm the place just a bit.

Yeah after seeing a 20c drop for der8auer and then seeing them all in stock I couldn't click buy fast enough.  The supercool direct die I did on intel was incredible.  Any chance I can do that over using the IHS I will.  A lot summize the IHS on ryzen is way too thick and thats what he got such a big temp drop.

Also why I put the computer in the garage lol.

in an AMD X3D thread, I'd think it's safe to say we're talking about an AMD delid tool.

Ask 🥑 what he uses, he's delidded LGA 1700.

It's much more efficient then Ampere for sure with a strong boost in perf/watt, but we're still talking 400W. My 400W (when PL is set to 114%) 3080 Ti dumps an absolute ton of heat into the room.

Yeah, I really wish AMD didn't bother to keep cooler compatibility with AM4. For one, not everything is actually compatible, and for two, the thicker IHS.

Premium Platinum - Lifetime

So I may end up getting:

7900X3D

Asus ROG Strix X670-E Gaming

Corsair H150 - hopefully I can find one without a ton of wires coming off the block and no rgb on it.

Still have the G.skill Flare X DDR5-6000 Cas 36.

It will be in about two weeks time. The parts will probably not go in right away. We will also be getting a Corsair H100i, to go in my wife's build, as she will have my current C8H and 5900x. She currently has a Kaby Lake i5 so this would be a huge upgrade for her.

The reason I changed my mind is that I want to have it done and over with and be ready for Zen 5 and have it be a drop in replacement, ideally I'd like to keep using my Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360mm because it works and looks fantastic, but it hangs down far in my midtower and will probably not be able to clear the top VRM heatsink on the Strix board.

I also want it to bench it for HWBOT and redo my 3D benches on my 4090 and get higher scores. Would also be cool to be the first/only person on the forums to have one. But wife is not thrilled with it even though we have enough money in the bank to buy like those parts 17 times over, so we'll have to see.

Update: got the 7900X3D. Asus ROG Strix X670-E Gaming is coming tomorrow. Bought one of the simpler designed H150is used for cheap on Ebay, this one I think:

https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Dynamic-Radiator-Software-Compatible/dp/B09YCHFXQL/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=1B7HK43G5MHTV&keywords=h150i&qid=1678223975&sprefix=h150%2Caps%2C155&sr=8-4

Compared to the Elite Cappelix model or whatever at the top of the list when you search H150i, as that one has a separate RGB controller box you need to use to control the rgb, but I already have a rgb box that all my fans connect to and it connects to the motherboard header.

This model of H150i should probably have the Corsair Link usb cable you connect to the block. As per my sig, my lighting matching is important to me and now I will end up having to install iCue to make the leds on the block match.

My mother-in-law is coming to visit this weekend and the big foldathon is the weekend after that, so I may not be able to put the new stuff in til the weekend of the 25th, as I will need my wife to help me rebuild the machine (pain issues).

Anyway, that's my update. The 7900X3D us kind of a turd, actually I think that Zen 4 in general is, but the point is that when Zen 5 launches in a few years and they shrink the node, I'll be ready for it and can buy one and just drop it in. Hopefully it's awesome when it launches. I'm still excited about this upgrade though.

I mean, I think the price kinda sucks, but it should actually be a pretty decent uplift over the 5900X, and should be less of a bottleneck for the 4090.

My goal is to just stay on my current platform until probably Zen 5 and 50-series where I'll either get a 50-series or buy a used 4090 for cheaper (hopefully). Then maybe by then I'll have a setup for a test bench and can put my current stuff there or sell it, I don't know.

I say that now, but could be I'll be outraged by pricing again and say screw it, I don't need anything. 😂

My optimus is "2-4 weeks out".  So I bought a cheap little air cooler and put it in a test setup.  Pegs the temps on R23 but it works.  Been seemless so far, gotta get into the memory and play with that.

Yeah that board is pretty. Should have mine today and a cooler that will fit on Friday. Mother-in-law has Covid so unfortunately won't be visiting. We will be rebuilding my rig this weekend most likely, depending on my pain.

Looks great to me, that write bandwidth is great and your latency is low enough. Might want to look into Infinity Fabric speed- where it says 925 memory bus, I assume that's half of what your fclk is, making it 1850MHz. Try changing Infinity Fabric speed in the bios and give it more voltage (1.25 SOC voltage) you should be able to do at least 2000MHz but some people are doing 2100 or 2133 (uncommon) I have no idea if it needs to be 1:3 speed with memory but it had to be 1:2 with memory on Zen 3 (fclk half of you memory speed). I really haven't looked much at memory and fclk for Zen 4. Do some more research on this stuff I guess, sorry I can't help more.

I think it's messed up.  Should be 2033.  It popped up some messages after saying it wasn't optimized and could be wrong or something but I had to go back to work before reading what I needed to change lol.

Play with it more tonight.

I can't for the life of me hit 55ns with my tuned b-die on my AM4 system like people say you should be able to. Best I have gotten to after some cleanup on Windows was 60ns, but there is definitely a lot of run to run variation with AIDA64. Likewise, I'm at the point where its just "good enough".

Still curious to hear the experience from Zen 4 owners about cleaning thermal paste off this thing and how messy that is. Ever since I saw that IHS design I figured that was going to be a mess.

You mean around the edges of the ihs?   Looks like tooth brush and electrical cleaner works good.

Yep, the top heatsink is too tall and will press against my AIO rad fans, as my Arctic Liquid Freezer II is like a 38mm rad compared to 22mm on a H150i. But we snagged an H150i lightly used off ebay for $110.

As you can see, my Arctic cooler fans are right up against the heatsink on my current board (the fans actually touch it)

Hopefully the thinner H150i will fit, we actually bought one and put it in and everything and then my wife broke the Corsair link connector on it. We did this when the small fan on the block of the Liquid Freezer failed and was making a high pitched whirring noise that just sounded terrible. Ended up returning the (broken) H150i and just bought another Liquid Freezer, we also got a few replacement fans from Arctic. So I've seen the H150i in my rig before and it should fit with the fans and clear that top heatsink (it effing better).

H150i I'm not thrilled about even though the mounting process is very familiar to me (I've used two H100is in the past on a 4790k and FX-8350). I don't like the rgb on the block or the cable you have to run behind your gpu and plug in to a usb header on the bottom of the mobo. I'll lose the cooling capacity of the Liquid Freezers small block fan, and aesthetically the Arctic cooler looks way way better snd matches my psu shroud. But I am not getting another full tower case even though anidees makes one that is a full tower version of what I have now, my psu eps 8 pin connectors wouldn't reach as well as my 24 pin connector, we'd have to buy extensions. Plus my desk can't fit it in the corner, I'd have to remove a little raised stand my desk has, and then there's the issue of cleaning a larger tempered glass side panel. So H150i it is and lets hope it fits. Will be doing the build tomorrow, god I hope I won't have to reinstall Linux and configure it, I'm praying for my current Linux to boot and work.
