Starting at the top, we have the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX CPU which will offer a total of 96 cores, 192 threads, and up to 384 MB of L3 cache. This chip will offer a 2.50 GHz base clock & a boost clock of up to 5.15 GHz. This gargantuan of a chip will have 50% more cores/threads versus the Zen 3-based 5995WX while running at 14% higher clock speeds at a 25% higher TDP (350 vs 280 Watts).

Next up, we have the AMD Threadripper PRO 7985WX, 7975WX, 7965WX, featuring 64/128, 32/64 & 24/48 configurations. While the 7985WX runs at a base clock of 3.20 GHz, the other two chips will be operating at 4.0 - 4.20 GHz at the base frequency while all chips boost up to 5.35 GHz. The cache counts are maintained at 256 MB, 128 MB, and 96 MB, respectively.

...should be interesting to see where / how they price it, along with the motherboard choices. Like with previous TR Pro releases, initially, these new CPUs might be OEM-only (ie. Lenovo, HP) but a few months later, they probably become available to the public, though perhaps AMD will follow a different pattern this time around.

 

Also, there was no mention of 'overclocking' (as in un-locked, unlike their AMD Epyc server counterparts). Hopefully, overclocking will still be an option, though these are power monsters and require top-shelf  cooling.  The 8 channel DDR5 variants would be my choice - hopefully available for the 32-core '7975' as well because that would be a real work-play monster.

I unsure if I can trust AMD with HEDT/Workstation platforms any longer. I feel like I got burned when I invested in TRX40 (I was an early adopter of TR4 X399 as well) and we got only one gen for the platform. I still have my ASUS Zenith Extreme II Alpha and 3960X, being used as a video storage server now. 

 

I'd love a new 32C processor + 8 channel workstation, but I need to see a commitment statement from AMD like they have with AM5, before I go back.

I still have the MSI X399 Creation / TR 2950X in use...was tempted to go for TRX40 but am glad I did not due to lack of follow-up processors for that chipset. I agree that AMD has to give some firmer indication now on what happens with the new TR chipsets after the initial TR Pro 7K WX releases. BTW, there were engineering samples of the '5990' X, but AMD did not release the product to market, presumably because of lack of competition from Intel...

If TRX50 happens, I will be upgrading my 3960X. 

 

I can't really justify the Threadripper Pro SKUs, but I would really like to upgrade my workstation.

Hopefully this time around there will be at least two CPU generations.  I was pretty salty when AMD killed the HEDT platform, and only released the 5xxx CPUs on WRX80.

When looking at the four AMD CPUs I do have (TR 2950X, 3950, 5950X and 7950X3D), the key is not so much the raw compute power (5950X and 7950X3D are up there) but the PCIe lanes and related expansion features on the motherboards for the type of productivity needs I have. That is where the socket and chipset longevity of the 'new' Threadripper boards  kick in...

Why did AMD cut down the PCIe 5 lanes so much compared to the TR 7000 Pro platform? Then they allow TR 7000 Pro CPUs on TRX50, but again you don't gain any of the lanes and you lose four memory channels. This smells rushed, last minute.

Yeah... half the lanes (but double the bandwidth) is disappointing.

 

I supposed it is further delineation of product lines (between TR7k and EPYC Genoa)

Also, it's worth keeping in mind:
-EPYC Genoa can only allocate 64 of its 128 Gen5 lanes for CXL use

-This is officially TRX50. (Don't forget WRX80 was seperate and more-featured vs. TRX40.)

-WRX90, is still to come:

The bump up to 88 PCIe lanes (48 PCIe 5.0) is a nice upgrade over TRX40.  Too bad AMD didn't do something more exotic and kit out the TRX50 with 6 channel memory (half of Epyc).  At $1499 for the 24 core, I see an uprade in my future.  

 

Threadripper 7000 and some 7000pro CPUs are set to release at retailers on Novemeber 21st.

...good to see that they are releasing that new Threadripper 7000 at retail to everyone November 21st (instead of exclusives at first)...but there is that pricing 😬 - I would want at least a 32 core and a really good mobo, including memory topography. I am running a 7950X3D w/ 2x 24 GB DDR5 at 8000. Getting four sticks (or even 8 sticks) of EEC RDimm DDR5 to work above 6000 might be quite a chore, but I might just try when the time comes.

 

Next step is to watch for mobo releases for both classes by Asus, Gigabyte & Co WITH PBO and other oc features; my oc'ed TR2950X already peaks at ~ 330W so custom cooling is a must but also not too hard to do; wondering though about the compatibility of current TR full-IHS water-blocks...

I'll be on the look out for the ASRock boards.  I've been pretty much all ASRock for the last 10 years, and ASRock had the best board layouts and features for me on X399, TRX40, and WRX80.  Also all of the previous generations had great bifurcation support and far and away the best ECC support.  It will be nice to be able to run RDIMMs on the new platform, and not have to spend the premium for ECC UDIMMs.

Noctua is offering mounting brackets for their old Threadripper coolers to work on the TR5 socket along with new coolers. https://noctua.at/en/noctua-announces-cpu-coolers-for-amd-s-new-threadripper-and-epyc-processors

 

Eyeballing the socket on the Gigabyte board that leaked, the layout is very similar (or identical), to SP3 and sTRX4.  The Noctua press releases mentions increased mounting pressure, but that wouldn't be a big deal to achieve on most full cover blocks.
