The Proton 11.0 Beta is the latest version of the Windows compatibility layer for Linux that powers gaming on Linux, SteamOS, and SteamOS-based consoles such as the Steam Deck. Even though Proton updates are frequent, this one is quite major because it rebases the entire stack on Wine 11. The updates include one of the most important additions: support for NTSync, which brings Windows NT synchronization behavior into the Linux kernel. This will reduce CPU overhead and should also improveframe-time consistency in many games, especially modern DirectX titles that rely heavily on multi-threading.

The update brings expanded game support, which is what every Proton release has done in the past. This further improves support for more games, expanding the playable library on Linux. Several titles that previously required Proton Experimental can now reportedly run under the main branch. The release notes state that the newly supported titles include games like Gothic 1 Classic, Deadly Premonition, Metal Gear Survive, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and the classic installments from the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis series.
