Compact CAMM Memory Modules Coming To Desktop PCs According To SK Hynix

During CES 2024, ITSublssub, visited the SK hynix booth where a company representative stated that the new CAMM standard will also be coming to desktop PCs. It was revealed that the first PC implementation for desktop platforms was already underway though no specifics were mentioned.

Well, it looks like this is indeed the case as spotted by our resident leaker and insider fellow, HXL (@9550pro), the recent JEDEC PR where the announced the publication of the CAMM2 memory standard, also mentions that CAMM2 will have a common connector design for both DDR5 and the low-power LPDDR5/X memory modules. JEDEC lists both notebooks and mainstream desktop PCs as the platforms which the CAMM standard is intended for.

That's interesting, but it brings up another thought I had. Maybe we should just be moving away from ATX standard. Take a look at how a regular ATX orients DIMMS against natural airflow where some one off motherboards like EVGA Dark and Classified series rotated the socket and DIMMS to a better orientation for airflow. And of course you have other standards like BTX that just never took off.

 

I think it would be interesting to see ATX evolve finally as we have moved towards things like m.2 drives, single GPUs, and now looking at how memory can evolve on desktop. Maybe there's a better way to do things than ATX form factor and motherboard layout.

The good thing about ATX is quality standard. Like the PSU i think it the only hardware part in the world with efficiency rating and marketing on using quality part like Japanese cap.

 

The newer laws about hardware are forcing them to make stuff upgradeable again and repairable.

 

Framework laptop show how upgradeable stuff can be it pretty impressive to be able to remove the gpu from the back of the laptop.

 

MultiGPU need to come back i would says.

 

The new trend of cable less mobo is maybe the road we should take? 😀
