Well, I found the solution to the VR problems I've been having.

Turns out the correct order is:

Make sure controller is plugged in and working.

Launch the game.

Get into a plane at an airport.

CTRL+Tab to launch VR mode.

Turns out if you launch SteamVR then launch the game, it ends up rendering the game four times, which explains the horrible fps occasionally. The audio also doesn't know what to do, and the game tries to use the Index VR controllers, which is why my Xbox controller stops working.

It really would have been nice for Microsoft/Asobo to put this somewhere either in game or on the internet.

I got sent a link to a car mod. One of the first things I did was go to a race track. For comparison, here's actual GT7 at roughly the same part of the track along with another screenshot to match the time of day and weather settings.

The camera position and FOV is a bit off, but considering Asobo never intended anyone to do this and I am comparing it to a game that has a laser scanned and hand crafted track, what FS2020 has is really impressive.

...obviously, I like the upper screenshot of GT7 better.

As to FS2020, it has been steadily improving - and I am surprised at the detail when photogrammetry kicks in. Using the Volocopter in a place like New York City and landing in the streets is a good way to get much closer to the buildings, and only then can you see that it is 'not real'.

On another note, I using the new path-tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 > very nice, but at a huge resource costs (Watts, fps). I wonder if we ever get path tracing in FS 2020; for now I think that few if any GPUs could run full path tracing in FS 2020 given all the light reflections and fast-changing angles.

...some early dawn flying over the highest part of the Andes 😀. The 4090 throttled to 70% (out of 121%) power limit, throttled GPU core voltage and only used a mild oc to get 'down to' ~ 400 W....which still is > 120 fps average at 4K, thanks to DLSS3 / FrameGen/ NVR...maxed oc and power limit gets into the high 500 W range in FS2020 but that makes no sense with the OLED 120Hz 4K.

  • 3 weeks later...

...a quick tip --- after the most recent FS2020 and also Win 10 patches, I all of a sudden had some severe stutter in FS2020, before, everything was butter-smooth. After some trouble-shooting, I moved the FS2020 rolling cache to a different logical drive (same physical NVMD) and that solved it, now back to 4K120...

I haven't been playing FS2020 all that much recently. I'm waiting for the PMDG 777 and/or FBW A380 to release.

In the mean time, the AAU2 beta update for the 787 and 747 do look great. They're finally making improvements to those two planes and both desperately need it. I haven't personally tried them, I'll wait for the public release before trying them out.

...I got to have my FS2020 fix pretty much every 2nd day 😬

Below is an 'early' 4K screenshot of the Pemberton Meadows / Mt. Meager region, taken in August 2020 (DX11, 2x 2080 Ti in SLI-CFR). FS2020 has clearly come a long way since then, but also still has room to improve. At least with DLSS3 / FrameGen / NVR, it is now buttery-smooth with a single RTX Ada L and 4K DX12.

Nah, this is taking the piss.

Microsoft announced that 2020 is a 10 year project, they just announced this, a standalone sequel. It really should have been an update like the 40th Anniversary edition was. Even if it's a full priced update. I'd gladly pay £60-£70 for this. But not if that means the £350 I've spent on third party aircraft and airports doesn't work on it.

Update: Microsoft apologized for their poor communication when it came to announcing this.

All content purchased for FS2020 should just be drag and drop into FS2024 and it should work without issues or requiring updates from developers. I'm fine with this, but tbh I don't see why that couldn't have been a paid for update, similar to the how the Top Gun DLC was. Except, obviously paid for.

...the money part doesn't surprise me, but I am skeptical about FS2020 drag and drop into FS2024 "should work without issues"...

That's a good channel. I want to know how they're able to get in the cockpit for these videos.

...speaking of A380s...'hanging about' in the summer heat at the Geneva airport in the Volocopter and watch A380s and other models take off, land and taxi. Looks even better at night ! 4K png original; check in full size
