According to the analyst firm’s estimates, shipments of PC and laptop devices reached 79.2 million units during the quarter, an increase of 12.7%, as sales “continued to benefit hugely from the COVID-19 crisis”.

 

Laptops accounted for the majority fo these sales, with 64 million units shipped during the third quarter as employees continue to work from home. Laptop and mobile workstation shipments also saw sales increased by 28.3% year over year, though desktop and desktop workstations saw a 26% decline in shipments.

I didn't see a good breakdown in the article about business/commercial sales vs. consumer sales.

 

Since Laptops were the main chunk of the sales, that would lead me to believe it could have been more businesses and school purchasing laptops for work/school from home purposes.

Agreed. I know of a few places around here that have done some bulk mobile ordering recently, and a couple friends of mine have gotten internships and coops with companies that will send them a laptop and they can work from home for the semester without ever going onsite. Quite jealous of that, if I'm honest.

I'm going to go with this. A bunch of schools here bought thousands of laptops for students do to their schoolwork at home. It's the same thing on a smaller scale for a few office businesses that I know of.

This, am aware of schools that bought thousands of laptops. I'm sure businesses where people weren't already on laptops did as well.

I've had quite a few people asking for recommendations for laptops to help them work from home lately. It makes sense there would be a surge right now.

Out hospital system bought a few thousand laptops when we kicked everyone we could out to work from home, so yet another vote on that.

 

That said, people have certainly been buying PCs to spend their time on at home as well given the shortages over the last few months.
