  1. Ignore the wires, I been playing around.  And yeah I know the exhaust is an intake, I been playing with that too.  Course now that I look at the pic that stray wire is a temp sensor I had in front of the rad fans to get my ambient temp.  My lick and stick didn't work apparently.

  2. Octo.  Course I have no idea how to use the software yet.  Been cheating with Fan Control program, but it's not set up very good for water temp control.  I'm trying to set water limits from 2-4c and it sure don't like control being that tight lol.  Works though.  I'll have to get a pic of my current conglomeration.

Personally, I know for a fact that my benchmarks on my 4090 Gaming X Trio for hwbot are being held back by my 5900x. That I just got. There is a CPU bottleneck even with it boosting to 5150MHz in games and doing all-core loads at 4750MHz. But I think my wife agreed to this because I've never had an entirely new build (sans drives and a case and fans etc) at once, and also because she wants my current setup in her machine.

Two things I'm worried about for Ai Crystal: getting the thermal pad off of my NVMe drive since it has a metal heatsink with a thermal pad on it. Also, my board not having BIOS support for the chip so once I put it in I doubt it will post without me upgrading the BIOS using USB BIOS flashback. Also a little concerned about the board fitting underneath my rear fan, and my radiator pushing on or possibly blocked by the 8-pin EPS connectors. But my wife and I will figure it out and get it done. I really hope my AIO will fit and align with the screwholes. Also, getting this monster 4090 out of my case might be an issue, since it's a midtower, the rear screw thing for the GPU is like outside the back of the case and makes it difficult to remove GPUs (with my old 1080tis we had to use a pliers to bend the aluminum mounting bracket that the screws go in to be able to get them out of the case).

I love my machine and if the 7900x3d can boost higher for games (All I play really is Forza Horizon 4 and 5 and very occasionally but I plan on benchmarking them both before and after to see how much the extra cache improves the score), it can boost higher for benching, can do faster all core speeds for stuff like Cinebench, plus has up to 25% more performance from the extra L3 cache then it seems like a worthy upgrade to me. And I was planning on waiting for Zen 5 like ENTERPRISE but with this upgrade I'll have a good board and RAM for when Zen 5 drops in like 2026 or whenever. They supported AM4 for a long time, they will probably support AM5 too, and if I bought a 13900k I'd probably have to replace the motherboard when I want to upgrade. 13900k is on a dead platform and as usual Intel would require a whole new motherboard. I'd get way better scores in 3Dmark2001SE and 3Dmark2003 with Intel as Ryzen does terribly in those benches, but I can live without those globals.

And sorry if it seems like I'm hijacking your thread but we're getting or trying to get a similar setup. Maybe I should make my own thread.

Hijack away.  More info we can spread with each other on 7950x3d being the right decision the better.

It does seem like the 4090 is insane and unless you have a 13900ks it's being bottlenecked.

Got my new m.2's in.  The other part of allllllllll of this is I also bought a new PSU.  The only thing I'm lacking now from keeping the 5800x3d (they have got to come up with a wittier name for these damn things) is a waterblock.  Another $100 I guess.  I really like this system too.  It's like the little engine that could hang with the big boys lol.

Side note, OCN people told me a month or something ago about aquacomputer controller and yeah that thing is amazing.  I hooked it straight into usb 2.0 header and suddenly my $150 board has sensors and everything I could dream of.  I have the entire thing curving to water temps now after putting a waterblock on the 3080ti.  Just works so amazing.   Getting the mora back out will really be a game changer.   I can maintain about 7C delta over ambient right now with just the 360.  Gonna need it to be tighter in the summer though so hopefully the mora pulls through.

I've got 2-D5's so even without them being DDC they should push plenty.

    Nice setup you're getting.

    I'm getting the ASUS Crosshair X670-E Hero, and G.skill Flare X DDR5 6000 cas 36-36-36.

I will also be after and hope I can get my hands on the 7900x3d.

I just read an article that says the 7900x3d will have faster core speeds on the x3d side than the 7950x3d.   Makes sense, I doubt they've completely overcome the heat issues 3d has so if there's less cores there's less heat.   Really starting to sound like a bummer.  Reviews supposedly releasing Feb 27.  But it's nice having a non x3d backup plan.   7950x getting pretty cheap lately.

I'm not even sure the 7950X3D is what you want if all you care about is gaming, I highly doubt it will perform any better in gaming scenarios than the 7800X3D when it releases and I think that's why they are launching that one later.

EDIT: Anyway, in my mind, Zen 4 was an iterative improvement on Zen 3 with a die shrink and boost in clock-speeds, as well as a platform change to LGA and DDR5. I don't find Zen 4 particularly compelling for an upgrade from my current Zen 3. I'll be much more interested to see what Zen 5 and Meteor Lake look like.

EDIT 2: Also, not sure what resolution you play at, but I'd be curious to see the X vs X3D parts comparison at 1440p and 4k.

The entire point of this is the fact X299 platforms are still very relevant same with 5950X.  I want something that will last quite a while so even if its ridiculous to own today, it will work itself out in the long run.  You can definitely tell the 5800x3d isn't a 12700k like I previously had......at tasks other than gaming.  Not a deal breaker by any means, I love the 5800x3d to death, but maybe I can get the best of both worlds with the 7950x3d and simply keep it for yearrrrs without it ever showing its age.  To me stuff is getting way ahead of itself.  I game at 1440p/144hz and what I have now easily satisfies that requirement.  Just like a vast majority of people used a 1060-6GB for a longggg time, its an amazing little card.  Thats my goal....find the diamond in the rough that won't show its age for the longest amount of time.   I don't see 5950X becoming obsolete anytime soon so 7950x3d should do even better.

And we know amd likes to keep their platforms around a few gens so if for whatever reason it does fall on its face, its not the end of the world.  I'm sure at some point might have to upgrade GPU as well but for now it does the task quite well.

But yeah, if I figure out its not gonna beat the 5800x3d by much or this or that, i mean its a $700 cpu........and my standards for giving up $700 are pretty damn high.  They better be on the floor begging during the release press conference lol

  6. What gets me is the 5800X3D has 96mb L3........so does the X3D side of the 7950X3D.   And we know that side of it will also be downclocked rather than running at the advertised 5.7 which will be on the non X3D side.  Sooooooo that said, is the damn thing just gonna be the same as a 5800X3D in gaming?  On paper it really doesn't look promising other than being a different platform altogether with DDR5 and all.  And if the reviews the day before release confirm my suspicion, I'll return everything I bought that day.  I can do a hell of a lot more with $700 than buying an underperforming CPU.

Are you overclocking this CPU or just leaving it to PBO. If you are overclocking I would be interested in seeing the mileage you get with the B650E 🙂

Afaik you can't overclock the 7950x3d.  Buildzoid has a ddr5 guide that looks promising, hardware unboxed even showed proof.

If I can even get one on release.

  8. I don't remember what board I had think X299 tomahawk, the stupid thing came with a dual 8 pin splitter so you only needed 1 8 pin power.  It's like uhhhh doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of balancing loads across PSU ports?  Didn't make any sense to me.

Avoid the 990 pro if you can.  They have a high failure rate.

Yeah I'm playing the odds.  If it fails I'll warranty it.  I don't really store anything on my main computers anymore I just use a networked drive so....basically I've got this drive failing covered haha.

  10. So this will go in my garage on the wall.  I need to come up with a board to mount it all to.   I'm gonna make the board hook onto the wall or something so I can take it off and build the computer on my kitchen table or something.

Monitor cables will go through a hole in the wall into living room where my desk and monitors are.  That way I can do whatever I want and noise will never be a concern.  If I wanna put deltas on the rads, so be it, I won't be able to hear a thing 😁

    The theorized specs...

    7950X3D

    ASRock B650E Taichi

    G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6400

    Samsung 990 Pro M.2 1TB

    Watercool MO-RA3 360 Core LC

Have to score another D5 pump for some more flow assurance.  That radiator takes a little bit to shove it all through.

    I liked yours better.

Yeah I did have to copy theirs and put it all on one sheet and tweak some other things.  Interesting how going above and beyond can sometimes be a bad thing.  Just wish I knew they did it before I spent all night on it lol.

  12. The hardest thing mine will ever have to do is play GTA.  Sometimes fs 2020 and maybe I'll get into another game at some point in my life but I have no plans upgrading my 3080ti anytime soon.   The rest of the computer....I'm hoping it lasts a good 5 years +.   5950x is still a legend so I think 7950x3d should do the trick.

...re. LAN daughter card, it takes up valuable PCIe on a desktop (rather than HEDT) mobo.

I do admire your courage re. Samsung 990 Pro (I use several 980 Pro), given the various stories about 'disappearing' space. On the 980 Pro, the 2 TB versions are apparently also affected but after recent tests, mine seem to be ok. Hopefully, a firmware update by Samsung for the 990 Pro will fix it w/o gimping the speed.

What DDR5 are you getting ? I'm still holding out for a certain type of 32 GB DR sticks.

You really are a power user lol.  I'm sitting here like I will never need more than 1 possibly 2 m2 slots, 1 x16, a sata for my 14tb of stuff.  And that's it.  I don't even need the 2.5 as my internet is 50mbps and I don't really need a network faster than 1gbps.  I'm a loser lol.

    F5-6400J3239G16GA2-TZ5RK

They were on sale yesterday and were on the qvl list.   Wanted some 6600 but didn't wanna risk having issues either.  I don't know enough about ram compatibility/overclocking to take too many chances.

I think everything else in my sig will work with it.  Get rid of 5800 and the board.   It's gonna be a wall mount so won't be using the case so eatx isn't an issue.

...another option for me is to just wait for the Zen-4 Threadrippers which often have boards with dual LAN - never mind a lot more PCIe lanes. Unfortunately, AMD isn't the underdog anymore like it still was around late 2018 when I picked up two nice TR boards at reasonable prices, in relative terms, back then.

I pulled the trigger and got that b650e taichi.  They said the b650e aorus master was just as good but didnt have usb 4 and the taichis ridiculous power phases sold me.   I also got a 990 pro, hopefully the wear issues are sorted out with the firmware by the time x3d comes out.  I have no patience lol.

Btw why can't you use a network card or something to get your extra lan?

That's actually a fantastic spreadsheet!  If you can get that document (eventually) sorted out into tabs, we could probably sticky that in the AMD section (if you'd want it to be).  Tons of useful info there!

What kinda tabs are you thinking?  I'm open to any ideas to make it easier.  I started hyperlinking the boards to their websites and might start adding other info.  The B650E Aorus Master has all of its M2's linked to the cpu so all of them are 5.0, whereas the Taichi only has 1, the rest are through chipset so only one is capable of 5.0.... info like that would be nice to know.
