Wish I had noticed that delid tools were available. I see PPCS has them in stock and I could have tossed one in on my order that should be here tomorrow.

I'm excited to see how things go with the higher core count X3D parts. I don't feel the need to pay the early adopter tax though.

The power efficiency is definitely a big win for me. We have a lot machines running in the house. Custom loops manage to keep the PCs happy but the heat still gets dumped into the room. I don't like living in a sauna. I don't mind loosing a tiny bit of performance for lower overall power consumption.

Yeah after seeing a 20c drop for der8auer and then seeing them all in stock I couldn't click buy fast enough.  The supercool direct die I did on intel was incredible.  Any chance I can do that over using the IHS I will.  A lot summize the IHS on ryzen is way too thick and thats what he got such a big temp drop.

Also why I put the computer in the garage lol.

...vive la différence, as the French say 😀

IMO, the 7950X3D is an absolutely brilliant part, at least for my use-cases - but that is also the point: If you like a 7950X or a 7800X3D or a 13900KS or 13700, there are all kinds of choices which can fit the individual's tastes, budget and use cases. I use these things for both productivity and gaming and for the latter, the games I do spent the most time on use less than 8 cores and also do like lots of cache, so the choice of chiplets management etc. suits me.

Per > this and > that, the 7950X3D holds a lot of oc potential and I will likely get one in a little while once other parts I want are available. No rush though as the 5950X I have (spoiler) combined with very fast DDR4 RAM certainly manages to hold its own in 4K gaming - even though the 4090 (and presumably subsequent top end GPU models) can start to experience a bottleneck at 4K via CPUs - but that usually happens well beyond the 4K 120 OLED max anyway, so it matters little for now.

I actually would have liked to see a symmetric 16 core top-end X3D model as well (not instead of but in addition to the 7950X3D) for some applications, but as I said, tons of choice. I just like to keep an eye on future upgrade paths and such for mobos / chipsets and also have a power budget due to multiple machines running 24/7 (never mind that 671+W RTX 4090 😬) so the 7950X3D is 'on my list' as I never got into LG1700 or the initial AM5 releases.

I am all for the best of both worlds mentality AMD is going for and obviously gaming benchmarks prove it is technically working.  Being the first of it's kind there will be growing pains and the software crap xbox bar crap to make it work.  It's all understood they have to do it that way when nothing is set up for it.  Just like windows doesn't understand RGB (yet) so you have to install a million programs to get the lights on the ram, board, case, etc to all sync up.

If cost is no object then its a clear winner.  No doubt about that.  Otherwise, quite a lot to be desired.  Of course the games do dictate that, I can't believe the ability even the 5800X3d has with FS.  The 7800X3D will sell out like hot cakes for months.  The 13900K heat output is definitely an issue for people who don't have the cooling to deal with that.

I guess the main issue with all of this is they promised big and undelivered.  Sure they all promise big and undeliver, nothing new, but after the 5800x3d I think we all just expected an x3d with so much power to really knock the socks off intel.  Course it does in power efficiency.   All just a mixture of pros and cons.

It's a shame how much of a letdown this has been.

Do you guys think I would benefit in gaming from upgrading to a 7900x, G.skill DDR5-6000, and a Crosshair X670-E Hero? I'd also need to replace my Arctic Liquid Freezer II with an H150 to be able to fit the board. But I have the money. I really feel like the 5900x in Ai Crystal is holding back/bottlenecking my RTX 4090.

I game at 3440x1440, 144 Hz. I think the resolution is high enough that CPU might not matter, but the framerate thing might need a faster CPU.

If you think it'd just be a waste of money and effort for no gain, then let me know. (edit: psst I just really want that mobo in my build lol)

I actually was comparing COD MW2 scores with gamersnexus scores (maybe HWUB idk) and I was seeing 20fps less than them on ultra, but the same as them on basic.  1440p..   Everything was the same cept they had 13900k.  So to me there would be a gain going to 7000/13th gen as they have a little more clock speed which is what I'm guessing is the difference, possibly DDR5 as well.  Either way I do think think you'd see an improvement if you run higher quality settings.

  5. This is my concern.  What I love about my 5800X3D that I noticed compared to my 12700k was it was so consistent.  I was always looking at the fps overlay on intel cause it was slowing down, but with the amd I never was, it was so consistent.   Looking at this chart though.........yeah I really don't wanna go back to that life.   Even if its just one game, its not what I wanna see for $700.

Haven't followed prices on the 13900k. Last I knew it was $599 or $699 if I'm remembering correctly. What are they going for?

Microcenter has 13900K for $530.  Minus $20 if you also buy a board from them.

    45 minutes ago, neurotix said:

Hey also are you going to scrap the build and return your parts, or get one anyway? Or maybe get a 7950X instead?

Well I bought (received today) a 7950X in case the X3D was crap and low and behold....so I will go ahead with it.  I really don't like the E/P core approach nor do I like this X3D arrangement of 2 sides to the cpu which seems to be quite complex to make sure it works right in comparison to just dropping a cpu in the socket.  So 7950x has the normal style and I'll roll with it.   They will update AM5 a few times so nothing says round 2 won't be better.

I love my 5800X3D to the point I'm basically leaving that computer alone.  I should just sell it but damn that thing runs smooth.  If 7800X3D is anything like it, they'll have a clear winner.

Definintely some shady stuff going on though.  I'll be doing some tests of my own on my 5800 before swapping my 3080ti over and running the same tests.  I just started playing COD MW2 and it seems to love x3d so hopefully it at least maintains the same FPS.

I noticed they all benched the same games too...  kinda.... strange......  In the end the decision will always lie with the games YOU actually play.  Course they didn't do any kind of COD benchmarks.

I heard that the AMD review guidelines told reviewers to run the Intel's memory at 6000MHz, when people are running 7200MHz and benchers are running 7800MHz and in some cases 8000MHz. Which Ryzen can't do. So they sandbagged the Intel. A 13900k is faster, especially with high memory speeds.

Did you notice no 7900x3d reviews either...   I love that AMD is trying to be different and give us the best of both worlds but they've been able to use 13900k's themselves for months, they know we were gonna figure it out an hour after launch.   Just don't understand their mindset.   It would be the CPU to have if it was $500.  They know 13900k current prices I mean come on.

Yep. The Intel's were sandbagged at 6000MHz RAM too, right?

Looking that way.  So Intel prolly matches it if anything.  Such a letdown.

  9. TL:didn't care to go back, I got mx6 too and put it on my 3080ti when I did the waterblock.  Thick enough that it kinda starts clumping when smoothing out but seems to work good.  Course GPU waterblocks work so good anyways it's probably not a fair test.

I have one of those kits. I can grab the Thaiphoon Burner info if you're interested. When I bought the 7700X back in November it came with a 6000CL30 kit, but the 7900X I bought last month came with that 6000CL36 kit.

Never knew about that software.  Really cool.

I got this kit because my current Flare X in my 5900x build has been amazing. I ran it out of ratio at 4266MHz cas 19 once. And it's rated for 3200MHz 14-14-14. I counted and it was 15 dividers higher.

Anyone know what dies that kit has? For my X3D upgrade (if it even happens, returned the Crosshair X670-E Hero because of the stupid VRM heatsink, also looked at the ROG Strix X670 Gaming and it looks like it's VRM heatsink also won't fit under my radiator fan). Just curious if the kit I got is good or not.

I believe you can get those free at microcenter if you buy a cpu?   You might check into that maybe someone or even me could help you out.  I didn't do it cause I know it would just be a kit sitting in my mountain of other computer parts.

    Yeah same ones.  https://www.microcenter.com/product/653727/gskill-flare-x5-series-32gb-(2-x-16gb)-ddr5-6000-pc5-48000-cl36-dual-channel-desktop-memory-kit-f5-6000j3636f16gx2-fx5-black

Good choices on block and PSU.

I also have a few Optimus blocks. Good stuff. You could kill someone if you dropped one of their GPU blocks on them 😂

I think picking up the 7950X was a good move. If the X3D is a flop you're good to go. If it's amazing it could be sold out for months. IIRC B&H gives you a 30 day return window so you should be good either way.

Thats what I was thinking.  Have a plan B so I don't end up screwed like the gpu fiasco all over again.

On the RAM, did you see what I wrote there ? " I know that 7200 speed won't likely work with the 7950X/3D but for other reasons which include upcoming HEDT builds, I want to settle on as few DDR5 versions as possible for interchangeability down the line." ...Simply put, I am planning the same approach I took with DDR4 re. a particular type  and speed of GSkill DDR4 which I use interchangeably on Intel HEDT and desktop as well as AMD desktop and HEDT.

Anyway, it looks like my AM5 build will have the same dimensions as one of the two AM4 ATX builds I showed in the pic above, so the 'exchange' if and when should take no longer than a weekend or so. PSU-wise, I am using a Seasonic Prime Platinum PX1300 for the current (up to 265W) 5950X and 675W max RTX 4090. I think the 7950X3D exchange won't require a PSU upgrade as there still is plenty of additional headroom. That said, the next PSU(s) I will purchase will all have to be ATX 3.0 and 1300W or higher.

Yeah I saw.  Just saying how terrible amd is with ram lol.  I mean I got 6400 and prolly won't even be able to use that speed either.  Buildzoid's ddr5 am5 guide has been shown to be pretty promising and being I am not a ram wizard I'll prolly just do that.  But being rated higher than the 6000 I'll prolly be forced to run, maybe I can run tighter primary timings.  I'm not about to pretend I know how to overclock ram but I can do enough to get myself in trouble.  Tighter timings supposed to really help ryzen so guess I'll learn.

BTW.......if I'm reading correctly......7950x has 80MB L3, and X3D CCD will have 96.  Maybe I can't count but to me that doesn't make it sound like it will be that big of boost over the x.  God they need to get these reviews out.

I have an Optimus AM4 block. Good performer, but restrictive. And although it doesn't actually have a jetplate insert, that slit in the acrylic that acts as the jetplate does get easily clogged along with those fine micro-fins. I don't know what it is about this block, but even though my Mayhems coolant is crystal clear, I find congealed bits of glycol in this block periodically.

Just something to keep in mind for maintenance.

I think there will always be a tradeoff between flow and performance.  You could have no fins at all and all the flow in the world and it would suck.   Im gonna use 2 d5's though so shouldn't be a problem either way.

I did cheat and just bought a 7950x.  Idk if everyone will flock to it after x3d is shown to be all smoke and mirrors and send the price up, otherwise I'll return it.   BHPhoto had it for $550.

I have to assume the difference here (score wise) came down to the 5800X3D over the 5900X if all other things are the same.

I was just telling a guy how it will be so interesting seeing 7950x vs 7950x3d.  Pure clock speed vs pure cache apples to apples.   5800x was barely higher clocked than 5800x3d so meh.  But I'll run the test on it all when I get it with the same card.  I'm not upgrading the GPU for a while, works great as is.

  15. Wanted to steal parts off my current build but when all I really need is a waterblock I went ahead and bought this

And this is the psu I got for it.  Was on sale for $299, guess the sale is over.

The heatsink on my C8H for vrm is not even an inch tall and is pushed right up against the fan. I have to have a ROG board as their bios is what I'm used to and those are the only boards I've bought since 2011.

I may not be able to do this upgrade. Or I might need a different case which I really don't want to do, don't have space on my desk for a full tower and love my current case ..

Is there an actual problem?  I know its touching but is it actually affecting the fan or anything?  Looks like it works fine to me lol

I am genuinely looking forward to multiple & trustworthy 3rd-party reviews of the upcoming 7950X3D next week, also re. its asymmetric chiplet design impact on OS and apps. I may not like differing chiplets in the same CPU but that and/or P+E cores are probably here to stay, unless one moves into the high-end HEDT space.

The other thing I am still waiting for is some seriously clocked & low timings 32 GB Dual Rank A-die sticks, s.th. at least as fast as 7200 DDR5 (lower speed Dual Rank A-die already exists). I know that 7200 speed won't likely work with the 7950X/3D but for other reasons which include upcoming HEDT builds, I want to settle on as few DDR5 versions as possible for interchangeability down the line.

I am not too worried about cooling the 7950X3D though - my 5950X has hit 265 W when fully oc'ed, and its cooling system - one of two loops below - has 1320x63 mm rads and dual D5 pumps (used to have 3x D5s, but I downsized it 🙂 ...). Regarding 'case' and all that, I don't foresee too many issues (other than that itch to build s.th. new and different yet again). The 5950X Dark Hero / RTX 4090 combo at the lower right would simply move to the upper left and displace the CH8 Hero WF with the 3950X that in turn will move on to other work-related tasks in another build. FYI, I also recommend the use of Koolance QD4s (lower left below) as they make swapping components a lot easier, especially with big complex dual loops. I have used this type of QD since 2014 or so and very much like and recommend them.

    BlueDualNewCityNight800u.thumb.jpg.6f50ca627a5aaf0ff9d8414a819a0d7e.jpg

The more I see the more they say 7000 series can't ever break 6400 on ram, and usually 6000-6200 is the limit.  This is religiously repeated by every reviewer and linus and buildzoid.  Not exactly motivating but they say CL is more important on ryzen anyway.

I had to google QD4 and yeah I have tons of those, you can see one on the front of my res in my current setup pic.  They are flat out amazing.  I have them on my 011 so and mora rad so I can quickly hook up to it.  Definitely one of those products that blows you away on how perfect it is.

  17. 1 minute ago, Fluxmaven said:

Yes. Once setup their controllers will run off the stored settings indefinitely. I have one running my custom loop PS4 that hasn't been connected to the software since I set it up years ago.

That is a huge benefit.  I might have to look into it when these 7950 reviews start rolling in.  I've almost decided to just get the normal 7950 if the x3d doesn't prove its worth on reviews.  This waiting game is hell lol.

  18. I've never understood this.  Everyone in the northern half of USA runs their heat all winter.  Middle northern states are always well below freezing.  They make all this heat either burning wood or propane or electric................for no reason other than to make heat.  Then we have all these servers making hoards of heat just blowing it into the atmosphere.  I realize theres a security issue of google putting one of their servers in your house but still, they could halve the usa energy footprint doing it that way.

In michigan I think Holland, the power plant actually does use city water to cool the plant, which in turn melts all the snow on sidewalks and such.

Just seems like we could really go a longggg ways of making things more efficient.

  19. 26 minutes ago, neurotix said:

Bad news. Got the Crosshair X670-E and was so psyched about it. Unfortunately, my case is a midtower case and my AIO is like 38mm thick with fans instead of 22mm thick like a Corsair AIO. Looked at the top of the board, and it has absolutely huge and overkill VRM heatsink on the top that won't fit in my case, as the fans on the bottom of my AIO hang down pretty far and would be in the way. I love the way it looks and is designed and really want to use it, and didn't know this would be an issue.

Will be looking carefully at the X670 Strix board to try and determine the height of the topmost VRM heatsink to make sure it will clear my radiator fans. In comparison to my Crosshair VIII Hero, this thing had like an inch long heatsink.

I'd take photos of my current build so you guys could see the issue but for some reason I can't upload anything larger than 1.46mb and I'm not compressing photos on my phone or whatever, this has only been since yesterday night, messaged Enterprise about it, the limit was like 4mb before.

Its interesting what problems you run into that you'd never think about.  I have to say the inwin 315 I have is the best looked case I've ever owned.  And........the biggest PITA to work in.  Absolute nightmare.  I'll be using the 011 XL I have for this new build.

Actually can you just take the vrm heatsinks off?   Buildzoid keeps mentioning a lot of these new boards have such overkill vrm's they don't even need the heatsinks.

Nice thing about their controllers vs crap like the EK loop connect is that the software doesn't need to be running all the time. Once you get it configured you could uninstall Aquasuite and monitor with another program if you really want to.

It programs it into the controller itself?  That seems quite fancy.

It does look a little complicated lol.   I never bought the next flow thing.  Seemed pretty expensive and nobody had one.  I have a cheap byski and it works fine.  I graphed the flow to % and meh, think thats all I needed to know.
