Folding Guide: HFM.net, Free Website Hosting, and Free FTP Server Sync

Recommended Posts

Folding@Home Staff

Introduction:

This is a tutorial for setting up HFM.net, Infinity Free Hosting, and WinSCP to all work together to produce  a webpage of your live folding statistics. There are a few various options you can configure within the folding client to link other PC's that are folding onto 1 PC where HFM.net reads the client and produces the website you see here which has some customization available within HFM.net:

1842446397_ssliveweb.thumb.png.763512d912b3ee10796c2d59fd919913.png

The screenshot is my Live Stats for 2 separate PC's folding a 1070 in each. They are on the same LAN, but they don't have to be. My link is in my signature.

Requirements:

1) Web Hosting

2) HFM.net

3) F&H Client

4) WinSCP

5) PC Folding

This can all be accomplished for $0 excluding your time and cost of hardware, folding, etc. The programs I used for this tutorial are free.

Products I used:

Infinity Free Web Hosting: Link

WinSCP: Link

HFM.net: Link

Step 1: Setting up the Web Hosting:

Spoiler

  • Visit the webpage and signup for Infinity Free Web Hosting.

Once you have it setup, you should see this screen when you login. Go ahead and click Manage.

Untitled.png.b6275fb1b9e2eb9c72e32747c35490c0.png

  • On the next page, you will need to jot down your FTP Credentials. These will be used within WinSCP to allow it to login to your web server and place the HFM.net pages into your website's htdocs folder.

Untitled.png.2ff26b4af47fcb9da0741a471ce792f8.png

You're done with Infinity Free Hosting. Let's move onto WinSCP.

Step 2:  Configuring WinSCP

Spoiler

  • Once you download and install the program, you will need to connect to your FTP of your webhost. The connection screen will popup and prompt you on first load to input the FTP details like so using your own credentials.

Untitled.png.1cfa3ebbd564c120d95e36b32c4fc9eb.png

  • Once you connect to the web server, you will see 2 sides. Left side is your local drives and the right side is your webhost. Navigate to a folder on the left side that you create that will house your local HFM.net website export files. On the right side, simply double click htdocs to open the folder. Here's what mine looks like when it's all setup:

Untitled.thumb.png.419f7a62d70534d1dab211a1447bdb0d.png

You won't see any files in these directories until HFM.net is setup. But, in order to be live stats, you will need to configure WinSCP to update the webserver upon detecting file changes in the local folder.

To do that, simply click commands, and then keep remote directory up to date.

Untitled.thumb.png.005be58b2af4adeda065b12d722ae8dc.png

You will then see this window which allows you to configure advanced options, but the defaults work just fine here. Go ahead and click start.

Untitled.png.a2302cf774a6703db9bf75e3a9ddfdc8.png

You have now setup WinSCP to monitor your local HFM.net website folder and update your web server when changes are detected. I just click minimize. Also, when you close it, you can save what you have setup and name it for quick access. I'll be working on more testing to fully automate all of this upon startup and/or with a script that launches it all later.

Step 3: Setting up HFM.net to Generate Your Webpage Documents

Spoiler

I was going to go into a complete HFM.net Guide, but decided not to in this post because I think most people have setup HFM.net that would want to have a live stats page, but this post over on OCN created by anubis1127 aka @raynikis still fairly accurate in today's versions: Link

The post actually covers it, just uses Dropbox which no longer supports using shared folders to host web pages.

  • Once you've installed and setup HFM.net to monitor your clients folding data, simply head to the web generation tab and setup your preferences there. FTP does not work consistently enough to use it within the application. I never got it to connect to my webhost to avoid using WinSCP, but you're more than welcome to try your credentials there.

Untitled.png.f2bb0ba0f1bc110959351f0e6e7d8972.png

Don't forget to save your configuration of HFM.net after you change your settings! Also, whatever frequency you setup is up to you. I just do 60 minutes. You can click full refresh, and then refresh all clients in HFM.net to generate the first webpage documents right away, and then change it back. When you refresh, you should see WinSCP light up in your task bar if you minimized it, and it will upload the documents. If people run into issues with using this guide as-is, please post and let me know. I will revise the guide going forward.

A happy HFM.net user over here, started using it again in april last year on 3-5 systems. Logged almost 19k units since then, but the most important thing for me is being able to see the errors and bad units with time and date. Also makes it easy to find them in the F@H log on the specific system.

Yeah, check mine out. It has the logs and everything online if you click enough times on the right links. I guess I can just update the OP if we find something wrong with the hosting at a later date.

HFM.net is a great tool.  I have used it for a long time to monitor multiple systems across my network with a mix of Ubuntu and Windows rigs.  HFM is installed on my Windows rig and it reads the client from the Ubuntu rigs, because getting that installed on Ubuntu was a PITA.

I haven't used the website option in years so looking forward to this.

Have not even had the time to lurk in the dungeon. This weekend is no children, so i'll have some time to play. Was really hoping the Watercool backplates for the Tesla's would arrive from DE, but it's unlikely. If they don't arrive I can play with this. If they DO arrive, I'll be putting the Tesla under water and modifying a mining chassis for rads instead.

I only get 2 child free weekends a month. It's the only time I have hours to dive down rabbit holes. Might end up being a summer project with my son.

I used to be on the opposite side of that, but now it's 2 more full time. I just buy my Wife makeup, and I get to play sometimes.

You could give it a try, but I doubt it'll spool a 220lbs turbo meant for 47L/ 4 cilinders :classic_biggrin:

There are 2 of those on that engine, 94L inline 8, 11000kg dry weight with 2khp/13000Nm at 1100rpm..

Slight issues with multiple rigs. Everytime I add a rig, It erases the previous one.  Going to get on discord and wait for your help. Getting a drink first.

Problem is that all three rigs generate a Summary and index HTML page, and since you can't edit them to be saved as a different filename. They erase each other when they load.
