In Honor of Hertz9753 Build Log

In memory of Micheal Hertz, or as you may know him as Hertz9753, I am building this computer to fold a GPU he used to fold in the OCN Team Competition, and then sold to me. I used it to build my 2nd Son's PC. He then upgraded his GPU, and returned it to me. I will fold it under his name for a few teams he used to fold for which are 37726 and 50711.

Screenshot_20210424-222818_Chrome.jpg

Mike gave me 3 GTX 460's free of charge and just said fold them as much as you can. We then developed a pretty good friendship. He served as an Editor on OCN for a short while. I bought the 960 and a 2600k. He always was pretty amazed at how I used to flash the bios to unlock the voltage, and then oc them.  I was always wanting to purchase his stuff because he never overclocked it. ?

Anyway, what we have for this somewhat retro build is:

  • InWin 903 Plus
  • InWin Commander III 800w 80+ Gold
  • FX 8320
  • Gigabyte 990FX UD3
  • Samsung 250GB 860 SSD
  • EVGA GTX 960
  • Corsair 2x 8GB 1600
  • Custom Loop or Air, not sure. I would possibly need a GPU Block if I cannot get an old waterblock or 2 to work with it. Might be MCW82 and Enzo Copper Sinks like old times. CPU Block is either a XSPC or a Heatkiller III. Depends on if the Heatkiller III AM4 block I bought adapts to AM3. I have a few radiator options, but that's the hard part with this case. I just think I'll end up on air with a Hyper 212+ for now.

@InWin Insighttagging you so you can see what I do with your gifts. Thank you for providing them.

My work will progress through the thread posts, and then the pictures and explanation will be consolidated to the 2nd post. Thank you for taking a minute to check this out.

Yeah, the 8320 replaced a X6 way back when and was just barely better. Really, it was the only bulldozer chip I thought was decent. I never really had it under water, so that seems like a fun challenge. The case is very limited on fitting a radiator without some modification. The only rad i'm not using is a triple thick 360. I guess I should ask old donkey1514 about those 20+ rads he's got in his basement. ?

Edit: Here's the watercooling dilema. I can easily intake a 120mm or 140mm above the front/side panel connectors. A 240 fits in that back, but won't work because the io and gpu plugs go through there. I could mod the back steel to external mount a rad though.

Here's the 360 so you get a size idea. Also, the back plate removed.

20210324_092112.jpg

I was wondering about the 24 pin extension inwin included, but now I know why.

20210324_095423.jpg

I'll probably be stopping here for today to think before I put that tim on the 212+. A 140 rad will not work on the intake because it will hit the motherboard. 120 might fit there though.

20210324_104640.jpg

Limited modding if I go this route and that rad outperforms my 2x ekwb coolstream pe's. Looks janky though. I would sand a spray the rad back to looking good.

Well, Hyper 212+ doesn't fit.

20210324_115211.jpg

Going to use this old thing for now. Long story about this thing. It was clogged at both tubes going into the pump at one time, so I opened it and fixed it, but I'll open it again because it's been sitting in a drawer for 7 years. Pump is working though after getting the air out of it.

20210324_122156.jpg

I'm going to roll with this for now.

Premium Platinum - Lifetime

Subbed :classic_biggrin:

It's not going to be easy to fit a full loop in there, that was not really my plan anyways. If I would do it I would not put any of the rads inside, only a big one on the back with shrouds or spacers to give it enough clearance for clean air. The pump/res could be mounted above the 140mm intake fan with a bracket so you will have some 'cold' air for the motherboard too. Not sure if there is an option to create some extra room by (partly) removing the HDD bay, which I never use anyways.

[edit]

Are you not afraid of air in the pump if you mount the rad this low? Might cause some noise or damage.

PS: I love the reason why you are doing this, I hope that GPU will fold for a long time to remember Mike!

Me too! Good ideas. I'll definitely be incorporating them when I get to the loop.

So, just to get it up and going asap, here's where we are case closed. I might do a 240 or 280 back there. Should end up being fairly flush then with the top.

PSU arrives today. My Son couldn't get time off work, but he's off on Saturday, so I'm going to drive 3 hours up to him like old times and spend the day with him. Might have this rig fired up on Sunday.

Edit: It's here, and I really think Mike would have really liked these PSU's.

20210325_104248.jpg

Edit 2: It's in! Interesting notes about the PSU, no molnex and no power cable, but 2 less wires stored in my drawers now ;)

Sure am, I am taking the who AIO apart on Sunday Friday and running the tubes through the holes so I can lift it. I noticed that was going to be a problem with this weak pump while I was putting it on. There's no TIM lol. Just wanted to get a feel for it.

Or today. The aio looks good. Did a bigger fill hole (added a small one years ago) at the top. Threaded G1/4 ek cap. Drained, tubes through holes, filled and tested. Pump sounds great.

Yep, I tore the GPU down and put fresh TIM on it because stock folding was 80C at 100% power. Not terrible, but a lot lower now. +100 core and +100 voltage at 108% and 75% fan is 77C after TIM. Much better! I didn't do anything but change the power level to 108% before and was hitting 90C. Should have took pictures of the non-existent TIM which was stock. Showed it's age.

The 990FXA UD3 v1.0 has terrible fan controls, and Easy Tune 6 is all but dead for Win 10, so I had to run an extension to my fan controller in my main PC for the time being until I replace my broken Commander Pro which was my fault. The board is setup in the bios right, but the fan ramping up and down all day is annoying, so I run them at 1,000 rpm on the controller.

I have to drain both of my other loops today to swap GPU's around. Should be neat, and you should see a big jump from me by Wednesday when the 1050w PSU shows up.

I switched it over to OCN. Will let it ride there for a while, and then over to TPU. I think I'll switch it back for events here only. Got a used radiator lined up from donkey1514. Checking to see if he has a pump too. When I pulled the GPU apart, I noticed the MCW82 will fit through the same holes as the GTX460. So, I have ramsinks and fans to get this all under h20 soon.

Let me know if the pump falls through. I have a Swiftech MCP655 laying around.

I ended up figuring out why this one wasn't working. Not the most reliable pump/res, but I used it 2 years in a similar loop. I threw it in a drawer 7 years ago because flow stopped and made a loud noise. Took it apart and a piece of metal stopped the impeller. Took it out, and reassembled. Ran for 34 hours just fine.

donkey1514 shipped me the 240 res today. So, I'm getting the loop prep done.

Final Pictures posted in post #2. I still have some pull fans to put on, but the temps are great with just push. The tubing was a little lighter than I thought it would be, but eventually, I will throw some UV lights in because it's UV Tubing. I suppose the color goes with Fluffy Pink Ninja's, or Barney lol.
