Intel Axes Kaby Lake-G Processors With AMD's Radeon Vega Graphics

A shame it was not adopted well, it was a great product for the Intel NUC range however.

 

Intel announced today that it had discontinued its Kaby Lake-G processors. The Kaby Lake-G processors arrived in 2017 with much fanfare and a bit of confusion, largely because the chips used a discrete Radeon RX Vega M graphics processor paired with Intel's Kaby Lake processing cores, marking an odd collaboration between the two longtime rivals.

 

Intel's product change notice is rather succinct:

 

"Market demand for the products listed in the "Products Affected/Intel Ordering Codes" table below have shifted to other Intel products. The products identified in this notification will be discontinued and unavailable for additional orders after the "Last Product Discontinuance Order Date" (see "Key Milestones" above)."

When this was originally released I thought the combination was mildly interesting in terms of having a decent APU available for budget rigs, although I guess it's a very small amount of budget rigs that actually end up using one of these, because of the poor cost benefit.

I think the main driving force for the Intel/AMD combo was the uSFF builds such as the Intel Nucs. This was a perfect Combo for an uSFF Intel Nuc build that you wanted the ability to play games on with at least some moderate settings, other than Laptops..it was hard to see where the Combo would be used. Ultimately it was always going to be short lived with Intel now investing in its own GPU technologies. So it was only a matter of time before the alliance came to an end.
