OLED Experiences - 2 years in

Recommended Posts

...looks like LG updates the software for the OLEDs, but per below, I can't really tell the difference (probably just more spy-ware ?!). I also had a chance recently to compare a 65 inch C3 and G3 - the latter had the new 'MLA' tech onboard (MLA= Micro Lens Array). With both at the same settings, they both provided a gorgeous picture, though the G3 was clearly brighter. Only flying is nicer 😊...

...and another super-yummy eye-candy vid for OLED (original 12K HDR...)

...not OLED-specific, but these trailers still look best on it, IMO - much of 'Hollywood' does use LG OLEDs for editing and effects-checking.

That's weird - I haven't noticed anything on my 4K YTs regarding sharpness tough it also comes down to the originator's HDR. How is this 4K YT HDR playback working for you (I sometimes use this to calibrate certain settings) ?

Yeah sometimes I need to double-check my playback resolution.

Just started Cyberpunk. Man it looks good on the OLED.

...speaking of playback resolution, YT sometimes 'drops' resolution levels later on in the playback phase, especially during heavy usage times. Clicking on vid settings and choosing 4K (w/HDR where applicable) manually settles it.

Cyberpunk 2077 on OLED is pure eye-candy, especially with ray tracing.

HDR on or off seem to look the same. Maybe the car light are a bit brighter. Starting to wonder if my issue is not amd.

My CX48 as not the best hdr either my 27 inch samsung is ways brighter if am not wrong.

It not really blurry the main focus is alright sharp but the out of focus stuff is all blocky and squary noisy kinda.

Well seem i have an issue with video on hdmi. On my active DP TO HDMI on the same hdmi cable the video are smoother and sharper. Swapped back and forth. Or maybe am crazy i will rerun it with more sleep haha

Can't run 8k hdr video without massive stuttering on both tho.

I love this one

This is my last amd card for real.

I had a similar issue with a 2080 Ti on LG 55 IPS HDR some years back - at the time, I was using a 'good' HDMI 2.0 cable but it would only do 30 Hz at 4K no matter what. However when using a DP-to-HDMI connector with DP port on the GPU and then the same HDMI 2.0 cable as before, I got 60 HZ and far less stuttering, and in my mind anyway, a sharper pic.

FYI, I just tried the vid above at 4K and 8K on my 6900XT > 40 inch Philips VA and it is nice and sharp with both DP and HDMI 2.1 ....will try the LG OLED / 4090  / HDMI 2.1 combo after work.

Have you tried watching the same vid on the LG 48 OLED internal 'native' YouTube (if connected to a network) ?

Not tried on the native tv thing. Will try good idea forgot about that thing 🤣.

And seem like all amd card don't support 8k hdr. Because of crappy vp9 support or something.

Supposed that my intel igp can handle it maybe.

The build-in YouTube of the LG is a bit of a pain to maneuver around in even with voice commands compared to 'regular desktop YT' but it can eliminate both the PC-GPU and the cable as a potential problem.

FYI, I just ran the vid below on the 6900XT switched to the 48 inch OLED and 4K HDR and 8K HDR worked well - though the 8K HDR stream is a bit jerkier on the AMD w/ 16 GB VRAM compared to the 4090 w/ 24 GB of VRAM (not due to my connection - same for both with is 1 Gbps up/down); could be codecs ...still, 4K HDR especially is stunning on both GPUs and the OLED; for 8K streams, I prefer the 4090.

It a feature support thing. Most intel igp are supposed to support 8k these days.

Just amd cheaping out as usual.

Il try to ddu and reinstall driver when my cloud backup finish in like 40h.

personal bonus as this one actually has a few shots of our neighborhood in it, including the street we live on (I did a double-take - hey, I know that intersection)...

I time-stamped YT, this is also used for sound-checking home theaters and sound bars. The graphics are neat, too. While I have a sound bar, it is not even connected to the LG 48 inch OLED...for gaming and YT, I sit quite close (~ 1.5 ft) and as such, the 'native' sound is superb, IMO. Have fun:

I just ran DDU and reinstalled driver. I can confirm 8k 60fps hdr won't run on an amd 6800XT.  Going to try on my igp...

RUN FINE ON THE 13900k IGPU 🫤

What Codec though?  A lot of the 8k videos posted here are AV1 which  couldn't get them to play on my 6700 XT either, so stuck with CPU decoding which my Ryzen 5800x wasn't enough for, but Intel iGPU Quick Sync have supported AV1 decode since I believe 11th gen.

All the the VP9 videos work fine on my 6700 XT though, but the AV1 10-buit videos did not in VLC.

I can't find a straight answer on AV1 support on RDNA 2, the UVD Wiki Page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Video_Decoder) claims that it should, but the VCN Wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Core_Next) says that some RDNA2 can and some can't.

I think it like a partial support. But the hardware part is too weakly designed.

Anyways i got other issue am exhausted of amd. The Fan setting that reset when the driver crash. And the 120hz setting always reverting to 60hz after a while for no reason.

I would not recommend amd anymore.

I seem to have fewer driver problems with my 6900XT (left in pic below) than you, perhaps because I tend to run older 'proven by moi' drivers - but clearly, the 4090 (right in pic below) is a far better match for 4K/8K resolutions. FYI, both GPUs are connected to the OLED...

The fact that your 6900xt is jerkier at 8k hdr 60fps just prove that amd tried to save money as usual.

And for driver. Never had any driver issue with all my nvidia gpu.

Meanwhile amd there always something somewhere that bug out. Something often dumb and meaningless. Like my display swapping back to 60hz from 120hz.

Probably because i turn off the display with the remote and when it turn back on the gpu default to 60hz.

IMO, the biggest problem the 6800/6900XTs have at 4K and greater is their narrow memory bus. InfinityCache helps a lot at lower resolutions, but 4K and up is just too much for a 256 bit bus
