According to recent reports on the Chinese Board Channel Forums, NVIDIA has informed its AICs that the supply for the GeForce RTX 4070 will be halted for one month.

This decision was allegedly made in response to lackluster sales of the graphics card, which was launched at a price point of $599 US.

WCCFTECH.COM

NVIDIA's recently launched GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card doesn't seem to be doing well in terms of sales globally.

I think we are going to see a lot of GPUs dropping in price. These high prices can't hold forever.

Or Nvidia will just reallocate wafers to server/data center/AI products and keep prices as is.

Retailers on the other hand might drop prices.

At this stage, I am seeing too many situations where high supply and low demand is not actually resulting in lower prices. See: housing markets, graphics cards.

NVidia seems to go overboard with market-segmentation this time around; the RTX 4090 released first generated a lot expectations for the rest of the AdaL line-up...seems that even the 4080s aren't selling like hot cakes. Ultimately, this may mean that NVidia will look for additional revenues at the other end of the $-scale, earlier, ie. 4090 Ti/Titan Ada

I do expect a 4090ti and maybe a 7950xtx the market so weird they need to do it.

...and at the other end of the scale, there's also the 4060 Ti waiting in the wings on the lower end...some discussion of that one as well as the 4070 price drops along your OP here

Honestly I am pretty sure that with the enormous deluge that was the crypto crash this time last year, no one is all that eager to upgrade. I mean, think about it. What gamer guy that runs 1440p doesn't think that a 6800XT or 3080 isn't more than plenty for his/her needs?

Or what about the crowd that runs 1080p like me? A 6700XT/3060 Ti that someone snagged for $375 on the used market is probably sitting pretty darn happy right now. Zero need to upgrade to the latest stuff. The 4080 might be a truly monumental upgrade over the 3080, and it is if I'm totally honest, but it's also in a totally different price tier now which is idiotic at best, and iirc even the initial stock hasn't sold out yet since launch. Should say enough right there.

...apart from the crypto issues, there is also the recent Covid situation which resulted in a lot of folks upgrading their home systems and/or components. That said, NVidia's real money maker is the enterprise / AI segment.  Still, the RTX 4K release has been a bit weird - 4090 release prices were oriented on the 3090 Ti MSRP (before its price crash and subsequent inventory glut), and the 4090s very quickly sold out after release. IMO, the 4090 had raised expectations for the whole RTX 4K line re. price/performance, yet the debacle with the two 4080s (one since rebranded as 4070 Ti) and their biggish performance gap to the 4090 didn't help. Given some of NVidia's, uhm, business practices, a fair number of reviewers also were ready to pounce...

I just checked, and my 4090 AIB model is still at the same price (~US$1,619) at the same retailer as it was last October, but some of the more expensive / 'premium' 4090s and most 4080s seem to experience some price drops, and the OP is obviously about the just-released 4070 price drops as well.

Re. the whole RTX 4K palette in general, the line's DLSS3 / FrameGen / NVReflex make a far bigger difference (where available in apps) than most folks think. It actually delayed my mobo / CPU / RAM upgrade from a Ryzen 5950X / Asus DarkH setup, it is that good...about 80% of my admittedly smallish time budget for games involves DLSS3 / FrameGen / NVReflex apps, and I play exclusively at 4K.

lol, maybe we should just say "Nvidia's PREDATORY practices" instead of business practices....

I mean the 3080 was $699. Why would them suddenly raising the price for it's successor by $500 lead to good sales? There should be no surprise at all that the 4080 isn't selling well. When your price increase is proportional to your gen over gen performance increase that means its literally zero performance per dollar increase gen over gen for the 4080. 4070 is clearly a misbranded 4060 Ti in reality for $599, again a rip off. And the 4070 Ti has all the performance characteristics of a real "4070" as 70-class products usually matched previous gen flagship products and the 4070 Ti does this. Yet again, $799, so grossly overpriced, and again, misbranded - just maybe not as poorly as the "4080 12GB", but still misbranded.

The 4090 is the only good selling 40-series product. And my opinions about 90 cards being a rebrand and successor to the 2080 Ti in the last 2 gens with a massive price hike again aside, it's at least a great performer that really is unmatched and remains the only card in the lineup that they didn't actually try to massively raise price on from last gen. Yet it is still a cutdown card and I don't think they have any reason to release a 4090 Ti given AMD's current showing.

All I can say to Nvidia having poor sales is: GOOD, hope they learn something, and couldn't happen to a more deserving greedy company that is now more interested in being absolutely predatory with misbranding and pricing. I am an enthusiast of graphics, doesn't mean I have to be ok with how they are trying to price everyone out of it and ultimately give the average joe who doesn't buy the top end halo product for the price of what one not very long ago could build a whole high end/enthusiast grade PC for, every gen ultimately less for more.

So Nvidia poor sales? HA!
