What is the most powerful AMD & NVIDIA GPU for Supermicro H8SCM-F?

I was thinking AMD Vega 64 because of the legacy? nature of the H8SCM-F but idk if I could run a NAVI GPU on this board or not like a RX 5700 XT would be interesting?  Thanks

 

So far I haven't tested the Vega 56 I bought but RX 480 works fine.

Ya looking for the fastest thing that's not a crazy bottleneck? Or, maybe something a lil more era-appropriate?
There is a semi-true 'trope' that AMD drivers can be 'lighter weight' than nVidias (and playing w/ a GTX 970 on a dual-940 did reinforce that)

Also, 3rd Party AMD drivers give very long legs to older cards.

I'm about 'set' on putting my spare Vega 64 8GB ref card in my K8N-DL w/ 2 885s.
Depending on what CPU you're rocking in that C32 server board, that's 'not far off' from what I decided on

 

Edit: If you are indeed looking to shove something quite 'new' in there, BIOS-UEFI compatibility *may* become an issue. I've actually had better luck in that department than most folks. Ex: some people said a WX 9100/MI25 wouldn't work in an nForce 4 Pro board (like my K8N-DL). They were wrong. Works great!

 

Looks like C32 was largely a 2011-2013 platform.

(If I'm going for era-appropriate, I like to RP that the build got some pre-end-of-life upgrades after Sales-EoL. Sometimes 'workstation' cards are neat too, in-theme.)

So, lets see what's good about 2014-2015.

I have a Vega, 5700XT, and even a 6900XT.  Been a while since I've checked on server boards, but looks like C32 is roughly equivilant to Bulldozer and Piledriver ish.  I've got a 290x paired with my FX chip.  RX 580 is also a good pairing.  Vega will be SLIGHTLY bottlenecked by it, but it'll run fine.  R9 Fury would also be a good fit, although Vega would work better.  5700XT if you absolutely want something supported by current drivers.  You could also step into like a 6600XT, or even a 6700XT if you're at 4k resolution I'd wager too.

Have you tried your Navi cards in a ("Legacy") BIOS-only (no UEFI) board? IIRC, that can be a problem w/ super-new cards; the vBIOS is UEFI-only.

I have not.  I'll be busting out Socket 939 here soon-ish for the hwbot Team Cup (you should join us again this year, only 2 weeks left).  I can try one of them in Socket 939 or even AM2 here when I have those rigs out for benching.

Thanks so much for the replies!  Yeah I have a AMD Opteron 4386 in there, I believe it's like 4 Module / 8 Thread.  Does that mean its actually a Quad-Core with SMT or some such like AMD scammed us on these generation chips?  I was told AMD Radeon Vega 64 is the best for legacy, but I kinda wanna see if a 5700 xt would work because the price is competitive on ebay for a 5700 xt vs Vega 64 right now.

 

So your saying I need to buy & test a 5700 xt on this board because 5700 xt is faster than vega 64 right?  I wanna clock it to 2Ghz on a Powercolor Red Devil RX 5700 XT, that would be nice!  Upgrade the Supermicro H8SCM-F to 2x 32gb pc3-14900 ddr3-1866 modules because if u occupy all slots it backs the speed off to 1066mhz and causes system crashes & instability even on the latest bios update.  So I'm stuck with 64 gigabytes of ram, which is fine for gaming.

A Vega 64 is about the best one can commonly acquire for such uses, yes. Radeon Instinct MI25 cards are 16GB Vega GPUs of the same rev. as Vega 56/64, "Vega 10". Using MI25s as a 'gaming GPU' is anything but a plug-and-play experience, however.
You're asking the wrong person about a 5700XT being faster than a Vega 10/20 HBM-equipped card.

(Vega 20 is Radeon VII, and we shall not speak of this card, just the GPU die. )

In all seriousness:
A 'top-tier' board partner and Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Frontier Edition is meeting-beating a 5700XT and a 'boring' Vega 64 is w/in spitting distance of a 5700XT.
With undervolt, overclock, and p-state tweaking; Vega 10 and its HBM2 will beat any (out of box) 5700XT. (perhaps, excepting top-shelf OC cards like the Red Devil).

The Fiji (Fury), Vega 10, and Vega 20 GPUs were really something else. Even when benchmarks may say they're obsolete, there's just something about 'em 

Atop their impressive qualities they're a curio/relic already to collectors; we're extremely unlikely to ever see HBM GPUs in the consumer-facing market, ever again.

 

 

For gaming and many other User-level multi-tasking(s), yes; 64GB is more than sufficient, and faster is better (generally).
I doubt there's any 'tweaking' or 'OCing' options in the SuperMicro BIOS, and I don't even want to start researching BIOS mods/modding... So, fastest supported-JEDEC in just 2 slots would've been my choice too.

Similarly, I've accepted that 24GB RAM just isn't gonna happen on my K8N-DL. 2x4GB on ea. CPU is much easier to get stable. (BTW, It took 4 separate purchases of literal-lots of RAM to find 4GB ECC DDR1 that worked)

Find me some better (air) cooling for my card, and you got a duel.
(@TM my MI25-convert is 'gimped' to 1400/1420 Core and 1100 HBM)

I am thoroughly impressed with my Powercolor Red Dragon Vega 56 with Vega 64 BIOS with 1.2v vCore which is stock & cannot be adjusted for 1630mhz core basically max stable & the memory at 1.35v at 1001mhz clock which yields over 512GB/s, and I set it to 1001mhz because if set to 1000mhz it reports just 999mhz in HWINFO which is annoying on the OSD.  Performance is quite adequite but just wanted to test a 5700 XT I guess to compare to the Vega 56 on Vega 64 BIOS with some mods using Softpowerplaytable editor & what not.

So I guess I'll just win the lottery & buy Powercolor red devil rx vega 64 & rx 5700 xt just to compare on this supermicro board running amd opteron 4386 boosts as high as 3.8ghz but mostly just 3.4ghz with 64gb ddr3-1866 samsung modules.

Honestly, having ran a 6900xt, 5700xt, and a Vega64, all with modern enough Ryzen CPU's, I'd say the biggest difference between the 2 cards is going to be resolution.  A Vega is capable of running "most" games at preset Ultra settings at 1080p.  5700xt can do the same at 1440p.  And the 6900xt at 4k.  With that being said, those tests were ran when I got my 6900xt when it was new.

So basically, what your current Vega is doing at 1080p, a 5700xt will do VERY similarly......at 1440p.

Yeah I saw 5700 xt vs vega 64 is about 10-15fps faster at 4k avg on techpowerup benchmarks.  I play everything at 4k nowadays even at 30-40fps (vega 64 reported 37.9 fps avg vs rx 5700 xt 45 fps avg), it's perfectly fine for me for $175 not bad.  Once you get into RDNA 2 territory, it gets so expensive.  My dream gpu is the 7900 xtx but hey thats a dream & i'd go powercolor red devil as well.

Hi, I watched a video of someone using a Core 2 Quad & a RTX 3090 Ti & it worked so I guess I'll try a 5700 xt or a 6600 xt or some such??  under $250 gpu for highest fps.  Thanks
