An exponential increase in the demand for data has driven the recent announcement of a new 800 Gigabit Ethernet technology from the Ethernet Technology Consortium.

AnandTech reports the standard is based around current 106.25G lanes (pioneered for 400Gb) but doubles the number of total lanes from four to eight - it is essentially two bonded 400Gb lines.

Neat. Wonder how long until this hits consumer available add in cards.

Also, have to laugh at the part where they say "Will end users ever see such speeds coming to their devices? Well, most laptops on sale no longer come with an Ethernet connection" I know I personally wouldn't buy a laptop without an ethernet port. Wonder if they assume most laptop sales come from Apple?

We wont see this trickling down to consumer level for a good while.

Yeah, it's pointless for consumers right now. Even the fastest SSDs on the market right now are 25-30Gbps in sequential read, 28 times slower than what this can handle. Not to mention gigabit internet is still pretty rare.

Yeah, they're JUST offering residential gigabit service (non fiber) where I am and it's expensive.I'll stick with the 400Mbps and unlimited data I already have. The Gbps didn't offer unlimited data either with the basic plan.I'd have had to add an extra amount onto the base fee. With gaming, streaming, and my comp downloads there's no way I can get by without unlimited data. The Gbps basic plan was more than 3x's the cost of my 400mbps WITH the unlimited data added on. Go figure, think the cable providers are trying to jack the customers that they already have? lol, They offer the Gig service to NEW customers for what I WAS paying for 200Mbps & unlimited before I upgraded last year. :angry_throw:

I have gigabit in the house for my NAS and Plex server, but only 32/4 from spectrum. It's this odd situation where I'm using super capable equipment in an area where we lack the nicer fiber connection options.

I can only imagine what sort of neat stuff terabit ethernet would allow for though.
