Nintendo Switch 2 - First Look

I'm probably not Nintendo's target audience because I can't help but ask, what are the specs?!  Can it duelboot steamOS?

That would make it a pretty awesome handheld, but it's more likely to be locked down than allow people to boot other OSes.

I might be more inclined to wait for an emulator that can run off a deck or Asus/whatever other varient.

PC master race!  If I was buying a console for a family with kids, the switch would definitely be my first choice.

Doubt it will dual boot steamOS, at least until steamOS support arm.

I'm a Nintendo guy, so I'll always have a Nintendo console along side PC to play their games.

Rumoured specs: https://videocardz.com/newz/nintendo-switch-2-motherboard-with-nvidia-soc-leaks-out

Compared to other consoles, it's render performance is maybe around PS4 level but it has NVME storage, more memory, and updated GPU architecture that supports DLSS. So it should be a SIZABLE upgrade vs. OG Switch, which is a lightweight Maxwell chip.

The DLSS factor will be huge. If it's broadly equivalent to a PS4 but with DLSS, that alone would be a huge difference that would make it way better than a PS4, but with 50% more memory and an NVME, it should be able to push way further.

I don't think the footage of Mario Kart was intended to show off anything other than a new Switch playing a familiar game. I'm not even sure if it's a real game or just something they put there for the reveal. Surely there will be a new Mario Kart game, but that might not be it. I don't think they are ready to show off graphics capability yet since that could slow down sales for current gen Switch games.

It's going to be interesting to see what devs can do on a constrained device that supports Nvidia's brand of RT and upscaling for sure.

I hope it has a 1080p screen. I think anything less would be a big disappointment. My cheap phone that is probably almost 4 years old is about 1440p res. If we can't even get 1080p on a Switch 2 in 2025 that would be pretty lame.

Mario Kart (8 Deluxe) is the highest selling game on Switch, at over 60m units sold. I think it makes sense to show off the sequel but it’s a bit odd how they teased it. The graphic fidelity isn’t there. I can’t tell if it’s a Switch Online type game like F-Zero 99 or a proper sequel.

Either way, a new Mario Kart will help sell this thing. I’m personally waiting for an OLED version, presuming the display is IPS. All the rumours indicate it is 1080p, IPS and every rumour reported by the major outlets has been accurate. So expect 1080p. 720p would be a surprise.

I use my Switch nearly exclusively mobile. Either in bed or when traveling and on flights. I’d strongly prefer not reverting back to traditional LCD but early adoption will depend on software. I am super hyped for Metroid Prime 4, which will likely be a cross gen title. I just don’t know if the Switch OG copy will get faster performance when running on a Switch 2 or if I have to purchase a Switch 2 copy. A lot of enthusiasts will want clarification if games will run better on Switch 2 but I suspect they won’t, and will require additional purchases.

@Slaughtahouse

That's great news, it makes me feel less sad about selling my Switch OLED.

Thanks for posting stuff in the news; we need more people helping us. 🙂
