New York starts enforcing $15 broadband law that ISPs tried to kill

The New York law requiring Internet providers to offer cheap plans to people with low incomes will take effect on Wednesday this week following a multi-year court battle in which the state defeated broadband industry lobby groups.

A US appeals court upheld the law in April 2024, reversing the ruling of a district judge who blocked it in 2021. The Supreme Court last month decided not to hear the broadband industry's challenge, leaving the appeals court ruling in place. The state law requires Internet providers to offer $15- or $20-per-month service to people with low incomes.

Fresh off court victory, NY says low-income plans must be available Wednesday.

I've heard that Elon didn't want to provide Starlink internet for that cheap, or that if he did it would be massively data capped.  Will this be a situation where Starlink pulls out of New York?  Something to keep an eye on.

Interesting bit of news.  I'd love to see more affordable internet options to be honest.  It'd certainly be a shame if NY causes Star Link to pull out because of this.  I'm torn, I appreciate that law as a citizen who thinks internet companies are ripping consumers off.  But at the same time, I understand Musk's position that Starlink costs a lot to setup and run, so he needs those profits to keep the services going.  Sigh.

Hopefully there's a favorable outcome from this for NY citizens regardless.

🤷‍♂️ Price Controls rarely have the intended (as-labeled) effect.
(Esp. with rapidly moving/evolving industries, like ISPs)

The way I look at it, Starlink's just not willing to raise prices for 'normal' customers in the area to compensate. (Which, I don't blame them for, whatsoever.)

ISPs have a monopoly in many (most?) areas of the country & they price their service accordingly.

Need an example?

Why does it matter where you live, to see the advertised price for ISP services for the same ISP🤔

It is not for taxes & fees as those are always added to the ISP's bill & vaguely referenced deep in the "advertising jargon".
(edit)
You have to wonder why, with the state of currently technology, the taxes & fees are not a part of the visible price if they have your address?

Oh they've had monopoly's for years, since the internet started.  At least around here.  We've only EVER had Charter (now Spectrum).  Since the internet's creation.  Yeah, we can get "others" now like Starlink (way expensive for the speeds) or LTE services like T Mobile or Verizon (no 5G here).  But its still Spectrum's death grip on ISP's around here. -_-

If anything, I'd rather see our localities push to break up these monopolies and allow further development of other internet companies, especially Fiber.  Ziply Fiber has been TRYING to expand here for years to no avail.

That's good. It's pretty much impossible to be a functional member of society these days without internet. You don't even need fast internet, just a connection. 2Mbps is more than sufficient to do basic things like online banking, applying for jobs and using email. The fact that it's 25Mbps minimum is pretty neat.
