It is a fair point regarding the evacuation of heat from the backplate. Obviously you want backplates with thermal pads otherwise the backplate is useless. I will be interested to see how hot the backplate gets on the 3090 with the EK Block setup....though I have to wait till March/April before the block is available as I cannot find another company who makes a block specifically compatible with the EVGA FTW3 Ultra Hybrid variant of the 3090...such a drag.

...I finally found a backplate-cooling solution that is quiet yet works great - two ancient TT AIO 120mm fans (which I had exchanged for Noctuas during the AIO rebuild). Compared to other fan solutions, they dropped the highest VRAM chip temp by 4 C...yet you can hardly hear them, if at all.

 

Now its time to start getting this thing off the floor (below) after finishing the setup and oc testing and move it into 'The Thing', a dual mobo contraption for our master-br that also includes the Gigabyte Z170 Force...just got plan ahead now re. positioning for the GPU w-block and peripherals later on

Nice solution dude. I remember when I had a pair of Maxwell Titans, I strapped some fans to the rear of them as a ghetto solution to try and rid some heat off the backplate, it can work surprisingly well.

I am amazed how good the combo of 'open' airflow and low noise is with those 8-year-old TT AIO fans that have been continuously running in one build or another...a 4 C drop on the memory of the Strix 3090 with its 24 GB is significant, especially with GDDR6X. Now, it is just a question to put 'The Thing together nicely with a mix of old and new hardware...a nice X570 / 5950X would have been better, but this combo is decent enough....for 'The Thing'
