  2. Hey folks, time for an update for this rig.  So ever since I moved back in February, this lovely little system has become my portable VR/Streaming rig.  I am absolutely loving beat saber, and definitely need to grind harder to get further into Expert+(+) difficulty.  However, the 6600k in this system is definitely showing its age.  I was absolutely shocked to see a CPU bottleneck, but I guess 4 threads is no bueno.

So I am currently in the process of waiting for parts to ship the the second revision of this build.  I intend to replace the CPU/Mobo and upgrade to a 10700, as well as add in an additional 1TB SSD.  Hopefully I can get some photos taken while I work on this.  And also, since it is such a process to disassemble and reassemble this thing, I intend to stream the rebuild tomorrow (Thursday, 1Oct) on Twitch.

Check me out on my Twitch     if you all want to observe this madness!?

  3. My DT 770 Pros broke on the right so I bought some DT 1770 Pros. I'm using a Pioneer A-300R Precision with it on my desktop, I bought a FiiO K3 that I'm going to use as a DAC because I like to imagine it's better than the built in DAC in my motherboard. If it's not better I can just send it back and carry on doing what I'm doing now.

    Done :thumbs_thumbsupup:

@Simmons, add AirPods to my list in the spreadsheet because it's funny and will make some people angry :happy_biggrin:

    Also done :thumbs_thumbsupup:

Shoot. My Bad. I'm sorry. Sony A8F (65) - TV/Monitor in Family room.

Mirage M-7si (They are old - I bought them in like '95 :o ) They still sound good, but need room to breathe. They look like the obelisk in 2001.

I haven't really bought any HiFi gear in a while so yeah, my stuff is old. And it's more likely that if anything is missing, I missed it not you... :)

    In the "retired" column:

    me.

Sounds good bud, thanks for clarifying!

I mean, I guess in your defense, those JBL's are my Dad's which he bought new in '84, so I respect it.

Also added your retired "equipment" :drunk:

  5. Thought I could memorialize the A/V gear...

    Main stuff

    Home theater:

    Sony AF-7

    Denon 4806 Amp/PreAmp

    Jamo Speakers 7.1 (F/C/S/B)

    Sunfire True Subwoofer

    House Music:

    Sunfire/Bob Carver Cinema Grand Amp

Mirage 7-msi speakers (Pool room, bi-amped from sunfire)

    Nak PA-7 Amp

    Kilpsch Ref 7 (mancave)

NAD 916 Six amp for Zones, Xantech 8 source 6 zone distro on

    (Master bed, Pool/deck. Garage)

(and too many sources to deal with ? )

So I have a question for ya, for clarity sake:

What is the Sony AF-7? Google is not helping me here

The mirage 7-msi, is there a specific model for this one?

Quite the impressive setup, thanks for contributing to the madness!

Also, let me know if I missed anything aside from the 2 I already asked about.

    Hey guys/gals.

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for home theater stuff. I got some stuff a long while back when I was waaayyyy more budget restricted. I am not looking for anything crazy... but since we finished our basement (and got an LG C9 OLED) and I am using the stuff again I can tell it is lacking. I am not hearing things when listening to music that I can clearly hear on my DT 1990 Pro.

    My current setup is:

A pair of Polk Monitor T65 towers (Bi-amp'd)

    Mirage Omni S8 Sub

    Yamaha RX-V675

Again not looking to do anything crazy... I know this topic can get very expensive very quickly. Just looking for a good upgrade. Not really sure of budget. Just something that I can enjoy my movies and music a bit more on. Oh and I would be limited to 3.1 due to the lack of proper spacing for side channel speakers.

    Thanks!

It sounds like your highend may be suffering more than anything else. Have you confirmed that your speakers are capable of outputting those sounds? (I.E. reducing the volume and getting close to the speakers to see if you can spot the details)

My theory is it may have something to do with either nodal alignment, or sound treatment. However, if you have tried my test, then it may be something with the amplification, or the preprocessing of the audio. Those Polks should be capable of full range audio, maybe with the exception of a bit of manufacturer tuning for specific output.

Another suggestion may be try messing with the outputs your speakers are connected to on the receiver. I noticed with my buddy's setup, he had some issues where a preset audio mode was doing some processing to essentially remove certain frequencies from certain channels. Especially since you are running what appears to be a 2.1 channel setup on a 7.2 channel receiver, there may be some preprocessing on the head unit that is just cutting frequencies given a specific audio mode.

  6. That's unfortunate, so far I've yet to outright destroy pc related equipment. Though I did once manage to feed 24V into my old car... Was in a hurry to get the car started and ofcourse the charger had been used by someone else recently, popped a few fuses and lost 3/4 window motors.

Could add an s and balanced cable to the 660 and move the 323D to retired equipment.

    Done :thumbs_thumbsupup:

    • Thanks 1
  7. I think know those fans, and if they are anything like Vantec Tornados or Deltas, I'm sure you know they are screamers. Vantech does have 0.9Amp versions that are exceptionally powerful at full speed but can actually become bearable when dialed down (still knowing the windtunnel can be called upon if needed). Have you considered something like th eaquacomputer "splitty"?

I initially used them it this HTPC build (located in an AV closet) - but eventually dialed back to Scythes. It has at 7740X(ES)@5.0. GigabyteG7, NH-d9 (90mm fans) and a 1070Ti. It does get warnm in the case until the fans (6) spin up... hence the closet. :laugh_yay:

Jesus guy, you've been holding out on the audio side of things! You should drop into the the Home Theatre Audio thread and post what you got..

Now back on topic, loving that mobo choice E, look forward to seeing more updates!

  8. Updated my entry. As said in the headphone thread, had to replace my oDAC over the weekend. While I was hooking up my turntable, I set a ground spike through my audio gear and the only thing that took a hit, fortunately, was the the oDAC. Still sucks but it be like that.

Also, since I guess it is relevant, I added my pair of Schiit Sys's to my entry. I wasn't using them before due to not having the turntable, but now they are re-implemented. Somehow, I ended up with 2 despite only purchasing 1. Schiit just told me to keep 'em, so that was sick. Use them both as passive toggles, 1 for out to either my Asgard or Darkvoice (speaker vs headphone toggle), and 1 for in from the turntable or the dac to the amp (PC vs Turntable toggle)
