This time of year I tend to fold occasionally just for the heat. If by chance that should happen during this event, there is no need to include me in any part of prizes. On another note, I do miss the advanced control interface. This browser based control annoys me and seems somewhat limited compared to the old advanced console.

I'm actually going back from a regular desk chair. I know I'm weird, but my most comfortable chair ever was a gaming style chair. I'm hoping this one will be as comfortable as my old one since it's not made anymore. I kept it so long I wore the seat out, recovered it and wore it out again. The chair I'm sitting in right now is one of those fancy pants chairs that use what I can only describe as trampoline material instead of an actual cushion. Everyone in the reviews swore they were the greatest ever. Me, I think it's an over glorified trampoline lol. I dunno, I might regret buying another gaming style chair. Either way, I wish you the best of luck tracking down that CUDIMM kit

uh oh, new fear unlocked.

sooo... I just spent more on a chair than I spent on my first car. Secretlab Titan Evo XL McLaren preorder. I'd put a screenshot, but kinda ashamed how much I just blew on a chair. Still, I hope it will end the frustration of dealing with cheap chair that I always keep breaking.

SSD vs HDD - Which One Gives Better Long-Term Value
Minotaurtoo replied to alex1092's topic in Storage
you are likely to get a variety of answers for this. My anecdotal story: I've never had an HDD go bad beyond recovery, still have some 10 Gig units on my retro rig that have the same install of windows 98 on them that they had when I built it. However, newer large capacity drives could be using shingled magnetic data storage tech, and I've heard they can lose data... In theory, SSD's should be the safest option, but I've lost 3 over the years. One WD green lable, and two others I can't remember OCZ I think. Again, this is anecdotal, and shouldn't be taken as gospel in anyway. -

ExtremeHW Site Auction - Bidding Ends Jan 1st
Minotaurtoo replied to ENTERPRISE's topic in Announcements
Am I being too hopeful that the site will remain since it's still here this morning? If so, Goodbye too all my friends here, I wish you well in your journey through life wherever it may take you. -
I thought maybe my son was folding under my name for heat again. But now I'm wondering because it says I've had 4 clients active in the past 7 days, since he doesn't use CPU folding, it would only be 3 at most and I seldom do CPU folding as I often end up with massive work units, some of which find some way of causing my PC to become unstable even at stock settings with liquid cooling, something even the worst stress tests I've tried fail to do.

ExtremeHW Site Auction - Bidding Ends Jan 1st

I really wish I knew enough about maintaining a site. I would hate to see this site dissapear. -
well... I see I accidentally participated LOL I never even noticed the foldathon, but did fold some just for the extra heat on a cold day. Kinda feel bad that I only contributed so little to it. Folding is a cold weather thing for me, rather than using a space heater to warm up the room, I just turn on FAH.

Just bought some steel tubing (3x8 11 gauge), and made these monitor holders. Had to move out of my old "game" room and put my rig in the bedroom... At first I just dealt with only one monitor, but it started getting to me so I designed these and cut them out on a tube laser at work. Might not be the most professional setup, but good enough for those old monitors. Edit: don't worry about the hood toppling over, it's screwed to the wall and the reason I had to move out of my game room is our son moved back home to get a new/better job and is staying with us until he can get an apartment around here.

It isn't the latest greatest, but I finally broke down and bought a Thrustmaster T248 so I don't fail so bad at the racing sims... would have gotten the shifter too, but so many of my vehicles have more than 6 gears to go through, figured I'd just stick to the paddle shifters and maybe later get the shifter.

[Official] EHW Retro - The EHW Retrogaming club
Minotaurtoo replied to neurotix's topic in Gaming General
I'm old, when I think retro, I'm thinking of windows XP and before for PC and console wise, before N64 LOL I recently went full emulation due to hardware failings. I use PCEM to emulate an old PC. I used to have a retro PC on a wall that played games from the 90's to around 2006 or so. I do still have a Sega master system console that works. -
@damricout of curiosity, did that prove to work out? I tried a simple trick based on your idea that seems to work for me with SAM enabled... I first tested to see if the problem still existed, by folding under default settings with SAM enabled... and it did. Then I manually set the cpu slot to 8 threads... no crash... ok, then added another 8 thread slot... no crash... added a third... still no crash. I folded the last foldathon with 1 gpu slot and 3 cpu slots, no crash... I did have to turn it off due to heating up the room too much on occasion, but with it in auto, it wouldn't last 4 hours before a crash... At this moment I'm still testing, but so far no crash as long as I don't have a single cpu slot over 8 threads.

EXTREMEHW Foldathon November 24-26 UTC (3 DAYS!)
Minotaurtoo replied to firedfly's topic in Folding@Home
in as minotaurtoo, if I remember LOL -
finally broke down and purchased a proper USB hub to mount on my desk side, and a hopefully not fake flash drive to store my family videos/pics on to keep with me in case something bad happens. The hub has already arrived and works better than I expected for a cheap hub. I was using a USB extension cable hot glued to the side of the desk LOL, was a horrible solution, flash drives would just randomly disconnect... now they work properly.

I too fled OCN, Welcome to EHW! -
I'll keep that in mind if I have any issues, but for now I seem to have it sorted out. Looks interesting.

I meant to reply to this earlier, I found that when folding on the 5950x, turning off the smart access memory keeps it from crashing... I do this a bios level.

Ok, after a few days of testing the one annoying thing that seems to be related to the pro drivers is... sleep not working correctly... first the thing would instantly wake back up... then after I sorted that out, it would only sleep if commanded too by me... sleep timers would just hang... so I decided to go back to Adrenaline drivers to test them to be sure... so far it is working. The error I was getting was a service manager timeout error if anyone is interested. So far so good on the new Adrenaline install...
-
been testing it out today, one thing that seems to work better is having multiple live TV channels playing at the same time with SichboPVR... before when recording on multiple channels while playing multiple streams it would get nearly unwatchable...now it's only occasional glitches... Will see how gaming works out after it cools off a bit.. hit near 90 today. Also will test out folding later...

I recently had an issue with a beta driver from AMD that caused blue screen after blue screen... restart, blue screen... try to change sound output device, blue screen... try to change fan settings in Adrenaline, blue screen... Naturally I DDU'd the system to reinstall known good drivers... problem was I forgot to download them first... so I went online and just chose the auto detect tool... it suggested the Pro 23.Q3.1 drivers... since I mostly use this system for a media server/DVR with a side of gaming, I thought "what the heck" and let it install them... so far so good... Question is, What is your opinion of this? Good idea? or am I asking for a problem later... Hardware shortlist, in case it matters: ref 6900xt TUF GAMING B550-PLUS 5950X
