Delidding and water cooling are a bit above my enthusiasm level, (I still like the build and forget reliability of air cooling), but this sure seems like it belongs on ExtremeHW.

Pricey, but to be expected as it is going to be a niche low volume product.

  2. Hello all.

As some of you may know, EHW runs on the IPS software suite (Invision Community). They will soon be releasing IPS 5.0 of the software which is considered a major release, and with that there will come functional changes to the site because of this. I will not outline all of the changes that the new platform will bring (such as standard performance updates etc), but I will list below any items that will directly affect the community. There is no confirmed release date as of yet and once it is known, I will update this topic. This topic is to allow the community to be made aware of the upcoming changes, just so they do not come as a shock.

It goes without saying that before EHW rolls out the new software, we will be doing some testing to ensure that we can squash any bugs/unwanted behaviours. EHW is fairly complex so far as what we have running that makes the site what it is, so I expect there to be a couple of hiccups to deal with before we release.

    Welcome to Invision Community 5.

For a general summary for some of the changes coming in the new update, please see the below video.

**Please note that features/changes/theme layout as noted in the video may not make it to EHW. It will be decided which changes we look to implement that best fits the community**

    New Editor

With the new platform update, the CKEditor will be leaving us and replaced with "TipTap" After taking a look at the editor, there are some excellent advantages over our current editor and I do not foresee the introduction of this new editor as any form of downgrade so far as capabilities, if anything it will be an upgrade. For anyone interested in learning more about the upcoming Tiptap editor, I invite you to take a look at the below article.

    INVISIONCOMMUNITY.COM

Invision Community 5 has a brand new editing experience powered by a lightweight, fast React text editor built for mobile and modern browsers. The venerable CKEditor v4 at the core of our current editor is starting...

**Please note that not ALL functions of the new editor will be made available to users depending on any safety/abuse concerns. That assessment will be made at a later date.**

    More news as it comes!

    All the best,

    E

Hi everyone! I'm @neurotix's partner. Long time lurker first time posting.

I used to be on OCN as well, but stopped after someone thought I was just my partner giving him rep since we were on the same ip at home.

I don't do the benching or whatnot but I'm Joes hands for building rigs.

Anyway, happy to be here (willingly lol, Joe signed me up on Firefox since the captcha doesn't work on mobile).

Contrary to popular belief Joe has positive things to say about you all so happy to be here.

Long time OCN user/lurker here (joined 2/2009). I noticed that it seems like everyone was moving over to this place and that OCN is getting deader and deader, so I figured I'd go ahead and make the transition. Looking forward to the discussions, here's to another 15 years!

Welcome to EHW! Glad to have you here, good to see people from the old days of OCN still finding there way over here 🙂

There aren't really any on the market that I would go for. A good step up in theory is the Apple Vision Pro, but instead of Apple letting it be compatible with Windows, they decided to not do that because they're Apple.

The only other VR headset I'd recommend is a Valve Index, but that's going to be a mostly sidegrade or downgrade in some aspects such as resolution.

    3 hours ago, Slaughtahouse said:

I would agree. Not much to step up from but it could depend on their priorities. Vive Pro, Vision Pro, Quest 3, Index are all doing slightly different things. The only headset that pushes the boundaries for PC gaming and resolution is the Pimax. However, it's very expensive and is still bogged down by technical constraints (weight, cables etc.). If the users priorities are different, like comfort and portability, the Quest 3 would be a better bet (as a side grade).

John Linneman reviews the Pimax Crystal, the 'highest clarity VR headset in the world'. What's it good for?

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, I am passing them on 🙂

Whatever you choose, please also test it, as is (in this case no heatsink), and also with just the motherboard heat sink.

They do have water coolers too lol. I'm sure AIO is also around the corner.

I have not fully decided on testing parameters just yet but if I were to test multiple scenarios, it would be bare PCB and Aftermarket.

23 minutes ago, Sir Beregond said:

Those seem kinda ridiculous. I think I'll just stick with Gen 3 or 4 drives for now.

To me, having heatsinks with little fans on them that are that big is approaching the realm of absurdity with how I would want to approach on-board storage.

Some of them are for sure and some of the less "Crazy" coolers are still sufficient. However until a time where running temps of newer gen drives can be tempered by other means, the need for more extravagant coolers will grow. Just imagine Gen 6 and 7 lol.

I do know the Thermalright NVMe cooler you have listed comes well recommended. If I was to get one I'd probably go with the fanless model and point a fan at it myself though.

Something like this could be a good performing solution if you have the room available for it.

I will say that I have this little guy cooler and it seems to do the job on my roasty toasty WD SN750 drive. In my case my low budget motherboard didn't come with an NVMe heatsink.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did see that one but wondered if it would interfere with a cooling fan I have aimed at my RAM. My M.2 slot for Gen 5 speeds is next to my RAM.

  7. Hey guys,

So I will soon be undertaking a review of Corsairs new MP700 SE Pro.

However on this occasion the NVMe in question does not come with a heatsink solution and will be a bare PCB. I could use the motherboard integrated heatsink, but where is the fun in that! So I am in the market of looking for a cooler to be used in the review. After a quick look I found a few contenders, as below. What are your thoughts on the below coolers? Feel free to recommend others 🙂

We're so power deficient at large scale it's almost unbelievable IMHO. I really, really hope that guy who has proven working thrust without propellant will receive enough initial funding to further research beyond the intended use case (escaping gravity/high-thrust-extremely-low-input).

He even mentions (in somewhat obvious thoughtful nature) how this technology (and not completely understood fully) could breach many of our limiting factors in energy production. He alludes to other possibilities as well if the technology is applicable in specific states (loosely).

It's like in another thread on UE5 update where improvement is made at software level allowing utilization of existing hardware. We don't need rapid improvement of physical technicality IMHO, we need better code/implementations. :confused_frusty2:

There is no doubt that well coded software that leverages hardware efficiently can be a massive game changer, no pun intended.

  9. Hey guys.

Not having been keeping up to date in the VR game but I have a friend that has the HTC Vive Pro and they wanted to know what the next worthwhile "step up" from that would be?

    Thanks guys!

For the first quarter of 2024, AMD said that its gaming revenues were down a massive 48% compared to the same period in 2023. While some of that fall reflects an inevitable cyclical downturn in revenues from games consoles—put simply, the consoles have been out for a while and sales are beginning to flag—AMD also conceded that "lower AMD Radeon GPU sales" were also to blame

Interesting take. I must say that I can at least agree with RDNA 4 comments. I do believe that AMD are sticking to GDDR6 for RDNA 4 which is a clear cost saving measure but could also be seen as a lack of confidence in the GPU line to push for the use of newer technologies.

Do I think AMD will leave the gaming segment, no. But I do believe they could just keep their focus on the midrange and leave high end/halo specifically for prosumer/machine learning.

Explains why so many of us, generally speaking, avoid EK. I just didn't expect it to be THIS bad. Too many horror stories that are likely driven by the systemic issues within the company. Whether its products failing, customer service, high costs compared to comparable alternatives, and their overall marketing strategy. Appealing to the (larger) market focused on RGB, shiny stuff vs. highly performant equipment.

Thanks for sharing the follow up link from GN. I'm about 50% through that video. Super interesting content, could be a A&E special.

    Next time on Slovenian Greed

Yeah, well I know I will be steering away from EK, not just from a concern on quality, but I cannot support a business that has a culture of treating people the way they have.  The same goes moving forward for any of our prizing and reviews, we will no longer be making contact with EK for either, unless they have seriously mended their ways and even then I am still unsure about it.

I found 3 of them still in existence at THW, but only 1 is still relevant. That one has lost all of the embedded images, so I will need to redo the whole thing really. But it's a good one about breadboarding so definitely going to give it to EHW.

    Nice! Pm'ed.

    Dear Ladies and Gents!

Hope your having a good start in the week. 🙂

I was hoping to find here any recomandation for UBUNTU stress test and stability testing (CPU/GPU/RAM - best all togehter...).... Please share your recomendation, experience, thoughts.

So far i just found the following:

1, Prime 95 CPU and DIMMS

    2, Furemark for GPU

3, Passmark BurnInTest - is it worth the money?

    Any other options?

    Thank you very much!

GSAT is great at stressing RAM and picking up possible errors.

RAM With Google Stressful Application Test (GSAT)

For Linux users, the Google Stressful Application Test (GSAT) is an excellent tool for diagnosing memory errors. Alternatively, you can run GSAT in Windows using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). However, it doesn't have the same effect, which is why we so we recommend using GSAT in its native environment.

    Google Stressful Application Test

    1. Open a terminal and use the following command to download and install GSAT: sudo apt-get install stressapptest

    2. Once installed, put GSAT into motion with this command: stressapptest -W -s 3600.

The -W argument asks GSAT to utilize a more stressful memory copy for the processor. Meanwhile, the -s argument refers to the number of seconds to run the tool. Unlike other software based on passes or cycles, GSAT runs according to your specified time. On the norm, one to two hours are more than adequate to assess whether you have a bad DIMM

    This is a great idea!

I wrote a fairly extensive Aquaero & Aquasuite Software Setup Guide over at OCN.  It's a little dated now since that was like five years ago.  It still gets regular traffic though.

It was WAY more work than I thought it would be when I first started putting it together!  I might consider updating that content if there is interest, however I realistically would not have time to do it in the next six months or so.

    Nice!

Well if you and @damricwant to port over any of your prior written guides, that is great. When you guys are ready, let me know and I will give you access to the Drafts for our FAQ write ups 🙂

oof. about 10-12 years ago I wrote quite a few of tutorials for tomshardware. Then the site got purchased again and they went into the dumpster. I'll see if I can dig them up. If they still exist, I'll reword and update them. There were quite a few good ones for generic troubleshooting.

    Well played good sir 🙂

  17. Hello all,

I just wanted to take a moment to Thank You All for the work you have put into the community, whether this be from a staff or user level. Without your help and continued dedication to the site, we would not be where we are now. We still have some growing to do, no doubt, but I personally enjoy coming on here daily and checking to see what's new, or just following continued discussions. Discussion forums have a hard time of it these days with the growth of social media services but it is my firm opinion that forums/sites are still THE staple of quality information on the internet.

We have an excellent group of people here and I feel sometimes I do not thank you all enough and I wanted to assure you that all your efforts on a daily basis is noticed. I am proud of all that you have accomplished here on ExtremeHW and I am certainly looking forward to seeing what the future brings for both our forums and our reviews. As always, spread the word, bring your family and friends here, don't be selfish and keep it all to yourselves 😛

I also wanted to throw out an additional thank you to all those who have purchased a premium account, donate to the site and purchase from our merch store. This really helps us with the costs of running the platform, paying for private dev work as well as purchasing any add-ons that enhance the users experience. Thank you!

    All the best,

    E
