AI is it legit or the new Cypto?
Slaughtahouse replied to VoidTheWarranty's topic in Chit Chat General
If Nvidia is nearly the sole provider of enterprise AI hardware at a time where some of the companies with the deepest pockets are fighting to remain competitive (Google etc.) that doesn’t change my view. I still believe AI is over evaluated, over hyped, or any other description that can to describe the fact that AI is not as suitable for the amount of solutions people or companies think it will provide. I don’t doubt there is a lot of potential but… how it’s being applied today feels extremely unfocused, like casting a wide spread net in the middle of the Atlantic ocean hoping to fish a golden trout. One might argue until the scope of AI is really defined, that might be the only way we innovate, right? I’ll continue to watch with an open mind but for the moment, it still feels like everyone is trying to simply cash on the AI, large language model hype (Chat GPT). E.g., Asus will offer local ChatGPT-style AI servers for office use ARSTECHNICA.COM "AFS Appliance" will avoid the cloud and place an AI language model on premises. -
AI is it legit or the new Cypto?

I’m talking about the mind share, presence in media, general sentiment. Not the functionality of the tech. AI is being thrown excessively as a solution or tool for every job that people believe can be automated. -
AI is it legit or the new Cypto?

AI is likely here to stay but definitely feels over hyped at the moment. I feel things will cool down in a year or so but it likely won’t fall off the face of the earth like NFTs, blockchain, and metaverse vapourware. Pendulums swing and right now it just came crashing into the room. -
I purchased an Ergo chair about a year ago from Branch. The chair is excellent quality but their customer service… needs some work. They’re usually around $300 USD. I would recommend if you’re OK with the lead times. Ergonomic Chair | Ergonomic Office Chair | Branch WWW.BRANCHFURNITURE.COM Overview Designed in Italy and featuring eight points of adjustment, the Branch... On topic: I don’t typically buy collectors editions because I am not a fan of statues or figurines but given how much I loved Breath of the Wild, I figured I shouldn’t miss out on collectors for Tears of the Kingdom.

I grew up with Nintendo but my brother had the Playstation. I’ve never played Metal Gear Solid 2 (in full) but I do recall when it came out along side Gran Turismo 3 on PS2. Both games offered a sense of realism that I didn’t think was possible from a video game. I am intrigued to play them but I think I am more happy that others can collect or play these games again. The metal gear series is notorious for being difficult to access officially (digitally) from what I have heard. As long as they run at 60fps without hitch and maintain the original art style and audio, I will jump in later on. They don’t need to be fantastic remasters. Just good enough where it’s not painful on PC.

Sony Playstation Showcase Everything announced in Sony's PlayStation Showcase WWW.EUROGAMER.NET Sony's hotly-anticipated PlayStation Showcase is over, and we now have a clearer idea of what PlayStation 5 and PSVR2 o… Here's a good summary of everything announced. I'll work on updating the Google sheet since a few titles are coming out this year and will also be out on PC.

@Sir Beregond The Lord of the Rings - Gollum for PlayStation 5 Reviews - Metacritic WWW.METACRITIC.COM The Lord of the Rings - Gollum for PlayStation 5 game reviews & Metacritic score: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-driven... Looks like it's not even a generic tie-in and for those following the thread, this title takes the bottom of the barrel spot for a new title released in 2023. Congrats, Gollum.

I read that Jayztwocents removed his video. Not that I watch his content, not my cup of tea but it’s popping up in my feed. Even TechPowerUp removed the “Recommended” at the end of the written review. Not sure why the reviews are all wishy washy. Yes the market is frustrating but when a GPU has 128-bit bus, 8 lanes, 8 GB of VRAM, small die, yet they want $400+, you really don’t have to do whole lot of testing to know this thing will buckle under high resolutions. Have we gone mental? *in Gordon Ramsay’s voice*. Reviewers need to call it out. Consumers will follow. Otherwise the trust is broken. This class of card should easily handle modest 4K game or maxed out 1440p. @ $400. The fact that it performs worse than a 3060 Ti in 4K in some titles is simply disgusting. And they want $500 for 16GB of VRAM LOL. I used to love the mid end but this gen looked like a dumpster when the rumours were rolling out last year. Unfortunately they all came true. Sure, maybe DLSS 3 justifies that the overall experience can be better than last gen GPUs for some gamers but common, we all know this class of card really can’t take advantage of that feature fully. Especially with only ~40 games utilizing it. Not to mention that DLSS 3 should be able to run on Ampere… Just a lot of caveats around it makes it hard to call it a selling feature today. Honestly, the revenue from the data centre / corporate / “AI” market must be stellar because I don’t know why Nvidia is shooting themselves in the foot. Reminds me of Intel before Zen came out. Age of Nvidia stagnation inbound? I hope not.

How did Guru3D give it 4 stars and a recommendation when it performs similarly to the same class card from 2 years ago at the same price? Worse if you're still on a PCIE-3.0 board because the card only has 8 lanes. They keep cutting down the costs yet the charge the same price. Doesn't add up. This shouldn't be more than $300 in today's market.

Good luck. I thought it was just me at first until I saw this thread. I would guess that I'm now going through an extra couple bounces before landing wherever I need to be. I'm not no fancy or smart technical IT network type of guy but this feels like when I am working from the wrong VPN gateway (rerouted far away data centers).

Honestly, these past few months, and even last couple years have been really good for gaming. Sure, not every PC port is in good condition. Refer to Digital Foundry recent reviews for, Callisto Protocol, Dead Space, that Square Enix RPG, The Last of Us, RedFall. But still, there are a lot of GOOD quality games. Whether triple A or indie. I've probably never played as much games in my adult life (6-8hrs a week) as I do now. Since the pandemic started, I've been playing.... Hades (PC + Switch) Resident Evil Series (Remakes 2, 3, + new entries 7, and 8.) Catching up on Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, Elden Ring (PC) Inscryption (PC) Doom Eternal (PC) Hitman 3 (PC) Pentiment (PC) Streets of Rage 4 (PC + Switch) TMNT: Shredders Revenge (PC + Switch) God of War 2018 (PC) All of those titles are past couple years. This year with titles like Dredge, RE4 remake, Tears of the Kingdom... Hell, the next month has 3 absolute bangers: FF XVI, Diablo IV, SF VI.

I could populate this with more RE4 but... I've recently finished it and finally starting to carve on my backlog. Here's Vanquish, an excellent action 3rd person shooter by Platinum Games from the 360 era. Which was lead by Shinji Mikami, the director of the original RE4 The port on Steam is fantastic. Runs really well, scales up nicely. Constant 120fps no sweat. VANQUISH 4K, Max

techspot Modder puts 16GBs Vram on a 3070
Slaughtahouse replied to UltraMega's topic in Hardware News
Keep in mind that console architecture is different, including latency between memory, storage, gpu etc. I know you know this... but still, its worth flagging in this discussion. Generally speaking, looking at a quantity of memory on a console in isolation doesn't translate when the pipeline on a PC trying to render the same game is different. We know from years of data, it generally takes X% more PC system power to drive a similar console experience. Consoles are becoming more like PC's but they're still different. 12GB will likely be the min. for high quality textures, assets at 4K... but I suspect that the recommendation will be closer to 16GB in the next couple of years. You need that buffer for all those bad ports out there... If Nvidia wants to resolve things, they'll do so when their shareholders lash out. For now, they can continue with the "deal with it" sentiment. What do we have... maybe 6-8 months more of interest hikes in the US? When we're at peak inflation, maybe, just maybe, the ship will start to correct itself. Consumers and businesses are already cutting spend. Nvidia can only respond in one way. Lower prices. On the flipside, Nvidia is thirsty right now, and they got a few fish on the line (tech companies with deep pockets throwing money at "AI"). Anyway, I digress with my tinfoil hat tech / economics theory TL;DR -> PC gamers need to be aware of VRAM, Memory, and storage requirements this gen if they want full details. If you're not keeping up with the 16GB GPU VRAM, 32GB System RAM, SSD drive, just get ready to lower your expectations and lower some settings like DLSS / FSR (lower rendering resolutions). -
You should download Unreal Engine 5 and give it a test. Even if you're unfamiliar with modeling or creating scenes, there are the Megascans (Quixel) library and you can play with the tools. It's all free. I'm sure there are full scenes beyond just the Matrix demo which you can download and play with too. I
