Now large companies have a whole new reason to need more and more computer power; for AI.

And Nvidia was worried about profits dropping?

Sony should absolutely fight the merger at every step possible.  10 Years isn't very long and CoD is a major title on Playstation.

If you're gonna use the argument of mergers shouldn't be allowed because they they will hurt a company if the purchasing company makes a game exclusive, then you need to stop ALL pre-existing developers from being purchased by any company. After all, Naughty Dog was purchased by Sony in 2001(17 years after it was founded) and if you look at the games published and their platforms, you'll see that PS became the sole platform between 2001 and 2022 when they released 2 games also on PS and Windows.

Yeah I found it weird they called their 10nm "Intel 7".

But I guess they all pull weird crap like that. For example, TSMC calls their enhanced 5nm, 4nm, just like Samsung called their enhanced 10nm, 8nm. It's weird.

lol, Remember when "enhanced" use to generally mean it was BIGGER? And people wonder why us old folks get confused when they start advertising the New Improved stuff! 🤣

Agree, except both of those items are generally outside the control of an operating system, in the sense of getting them configured so that the user can actually enter their own password. They're up to the user to configure. If there was an implementation of something akin to bitlocker, where admins can enable a password required to boot and the user can make their own, except apply it to the bios & bootloader, that'd be sweet.

Can W10 passwords still be removed that way? I thought that wasn't a thing anymore.

Is this where hardware security keys (the removeable ones) enter the chat? Or do those just apply to logging into the computer?

If one could configure a hardware key to be required for POST or bootloader access...

I can only speak as to what actually happened to me. I was using TPM via the encryption abilities of my Ryzen 2700x (so as to make my comp Win 11 compatible even though I hadn't switched yet) Had a bios issue and while tracking it down I did the old school clearing of the CMOS as 1 of my ways to find the problem. When I finally got back up and a semi current bios installed, when I tried switching TPM back on it told me it was unable to because the key didn't match the 1 on the drive. Doing it anyway caused my boot drive to disappear. Turn TPM back off and Boot drive was back.  I wonder if I would have had to do a clean install of windows if I'd upgraded the cpu?

If you were already in the OCN discord, you're already going to be in the EHW discord. The OCN one got rebranded a few weeks ago.

Andrew! U saved me on the EHW home page for eternity! How can I ever thank you?? 🤣 Immortality is MINE!  (My reply, not my thread)

Good.  I know I'm in the minority here, but TPM is not good for the industry.

I can understanding encrypting a drive and saving the key to a bios.  I can understand using manufacture keys to prevent unsigned bios updates.  What I can't fathom is why Microsoft has final say on what's "trusted" and should be able to run on a computer.  If they are worried about booting outside OS systems that can compromise a system, they should lock down the boot loader and bios under a user password.

Windows 10 passwords can be bypassed with a simple windows 10 bootable USB, the same USB you may NEED to restore a corrupt system or reinstall the OS.  A rubber ducky can grab a lot of information without even logging into a system.  If microsoft was worried about security, they could do a lot more to fix their systems than try to control the industry.  TPM was always a power grab by microsoft, once people realize it doesn't actually provide security, they might move on to something else.

Agree, but for a different reason, if there's an issue with a bios update or other bios/Hardware issue that causes you to have to clear the CMOS you loose the tpm key and when trying to turn tpm back on you loose any info that was previously encrypted. The Encrypted data IS available with tpm turned off, so what's the point? If someone can access "secure" data simply by turning off tpm in the bios, how secure is it really?

Great. Jesus. They just keep finding more and more exploits since around 2017. I used to run a rootkit scanner, I think it might have been from Trend Micro. Perhaps I need to run it and check for any crap like this.

If on Windows, for a starter,

    SUPPORT.MICROSOFT.COM

Learn how to use Microsoft Defender Offline to help remove malicious software and other potential threats.

or Malwarebytes Free version has a Rootkit option box in the manual scan

This is how BingChat responded to your question 🤣

"Both AI and blockchain have many potential applications and benefits for various domains and industries, such as finance, healthcare, supply chain, etc. However, they also face some challenges and limitations, such as ethical issues, scalability problems, security risks, etc.

Some people may use the phrases “AI all the things” or “Blockchain all the things” to express their enthusiasm or optimism about these technologies and their future impact on society. However, these phrases may also be seen as exaggerations or oversimplifications of the complex realities and trade-offs involved in adopting and implementing these technologies."

I think it mostly just boils down to "AI" being harder better faster and stronger.

Just for fun, I asked BingChat to write a new daft punk song:

    We are the robots
    We are the future
    We are the music
    We are the culture

    We have a vision
    We have a mission
    We have a passion
    We have a fusion

    Robot, future
    Music, culture
    Vision, mission
    Passion, fusion

    [Chorus]
    We are the robots (robot)
    We are the future (future)
    We are the music (music)
    We are the culture (culture)

Robot robot robot robot robot robot robot robot
Future future future future future future future future
Music music music music music music music music
Culture culture culture culture culture culture culture culture

    [Repeat chorus]

Bing Chat will be suing artist for writing songs that it supposedly wrote in it's server before they wrote it.....

  9. there are supposed to be 5 new LOTR games in the next 24 months. I honestly don't know if I'll get any of them because of the way that Shadow of Mordor/of War games broke my heart the way they played fast and loose with the lore. I mean really,Shelob portrayed as Kate Beckinsale dressed as a cocktail waitress? 😢

  10. my internet/phone is roughly $70 after the discounts we weaseled out of them, then we applied the FCC's affordable connectivity program to the account and THAT gave us $35 credit towards our internet every month. So,base rate is now under $35 a month for the following speeds and unlimited Long distance ph. (We DO get random service drops and starts which are annoying as f@&k but it may be because of my wifi not being set up well, and too many things between router and systems.)

First shot is test taken from source 50 miles away from independent server.

Second shot is test taken from Suddenlink server roughly 400 miles away.         Though it says my service is still Suddenlink, they were bought up by Optimum in my area.Even the new modem I got has Optimum name on it.  All test using Speed test with 7 tabs open besides the speedtest tab. in FireFox.

I always figured either it will stay 12GB or go 10GB.

It's really puzzling how stingy Nvidia is with VRAM. Hindsight is 20/20 now that the gen is done, but it was rather strange how big a gulf Ampere started with where top end was 24GB and next one down was 10GB. To this day I wonder why they didn't go down the 20GB 3080 or 3080 Ti route with a 16GB 3070 / 3070 Ti.

My tinfoil hat theory is as much as they tried to pretend the 90 cards are "Titans", it behooved them to try to get more gamers worried about VRAM buying higher up then they normally would in the stack.

2 MSRP 3090's at launch would cost $3,000 for 48GB ram. Meanwhile you could get 4 3080's for $2800 and a 3070 for $500. $300 more for the same ram spread over 3 more cards. They actually make more $ by the memory per card sold. (like that's a surprise that nvidia is looking for a profit)😉

The investor thing isn't really THAT iffy if you think about it.  It'd be like Microsoft being an investor in a pro America video game and people boycotting American made video games because of a war or something.  The investor isn't necessarily involved with the game other than finances.  Yes, its a valid concern, but I doubt they had much to do with the game itself.  And yes, the game is very pro Russia from the sounds of it.  But again, is that REALLY that big of a deal?  It's fiction for starters, and secondly who wouldn't want to be pro their own country?  If Italians made a new game that was painting Italy in a positive light and was "pro Italy" would THAT be that big of a deal?  It's a touchy subject simply because of politics and the war, it has nothing to do with the people themselves in said country (in my opinion).

And yes, the second point you made there is very curious indeed.  If there's already a boycott why DID this game get through?  Hard to say for sure.  THAT, is a very valid question and probably deserves some answers.

I'm not saying that I'm going to install this game or not.  Probably not to be honest, I'm just not much of a gamer.  I just don't see the problem here if you take things at face value.  It's a video game.  If people outside of Russia bought it, the developers should get paid for their efforts, regardless of their country or nationality.

See, I don't care about some war between one group of rich people and another group of rich people.  I care about the people themselves of these places.  And its pretty rough on my heart hearing people hating on Russians or Ukrainians.  Those people themselves have nothing to do with this nonsense, they just want to live their lives, same as the rest of us.

"It'd be like Microsoft being an investor in a pro America video game and people boycotting American made video games because of a war or something."   <--- Nooo, It'd be like the CIA being an investor in a Pro America game and people saying to boycott it because we invaded a country and had been fighting there for a year trying to take it over and released the game on the 1 year anniversary.  That's IF the russian devs have ties to the govt. Nobody seems to know for sure.

As to how the game got past, not sure.

Dont you have the feeling that it will go as well one day to the subscription business model? You buy a GPU and you are an lucky owner BUT "Oh you want as well that your fans on it spin? Well that costs extra - just for 50 Cent/month each fan and the first 2 months are for free"  😄😄😄

At least is this approach tested in Automotive in china 🙄

OR it'll be like the 1060 fiasco with your choice of ram and a different gpu on each version..... Oh, you wanted the gpu with the full amount of cuda cores and tensor cores? U should have bought the card with the higher memory! BUT! We can lease you more cores with a bios upgrade that gets ck'd every 24 hours to make sure your license is current. 🙂 1 kidney and 1 lung for a 3 year license......
