That promise is removed from the current version. There's also a notable change in a data privacy FAQ that used to say, "Mozilla doesn't sell data about you, and we don't buy data about you." ... Users criticized Mozilla in discussions on GitHub and Reddit. One area of concern is over new terms of use that say, "When you upload or input information through Firefox, you hereby grant us a nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use that information to help you navigate, experience, and interact with online content as you indicate with your use of Firefox." Firefox deletes promise to never sell personal data, asks users not to panic ARSTECHNICA.COM Mozilla says it deleted promise because “sale of data” is defined broadly. Really disappointing. I knew data brokerage was in the works back when they let people login to sync devices. It was a reason to harvest bookmarks and history. Someone has to pay for that data storage... Mozilla doesn't mention anything about this change when using the program. Might be time to start looking for alternatives... Shady contract updates without notice don't sit well with me.

Somewhere I read a report about up scaling moving aimed shots off by a pixel. It's probably not a noticeable difference, but competitive first person shooter (fps) games are where frames per second (fps) matters! FPS matters for FPS, imagine that! I also remember reading that on older graphics cards with limited v-ram, on games like pubG, shrubs aren't drawn in when it's a longer distance, which is why you should never hide in the grass for cover! #FirstWorldProblems, my graphics card is too good!

At 40 FPS I immediately downgrade shadows! I learned a long time ago that shadows are a pretty big hit to GPUs and my brain doesn't look for detail in shadows. If there's a shadow that's good enough for me. I guess that's an old tendency and I could be looking to enable up scaling instead. (I downgrade shadows before up scaling).

Would you replace your 7900 XTX if the 5090 was good? I'm planning to get 8 years out of my XTX... I think the only thing that would change my mind is VR performance.

I think the problem is that both of them can operate at a near loss, even affording to take a loss when selling older stock off. They have shown that they will undercut each other, so in order to prevent printing cards for pennies we have price fixing. Price fixing favours Nvidia because they have spent more developing Ray tracing, DLSS, and now fake frames. Nvidia seems to partner with gaming companies to favour their hardware. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle came out as ray tracing only. This is the stuff that makes teenagers tell their parents, I want the good card that can play everything. It has to be Nvidia! I'd rather boycott some games, but that's just me. Nvidia lost me as a customer when they screwed with the GTX 970 memory controllers. When I was using that card FSR worked and DLSS didn't because Nvidia chose to lock out older cards. I'm team red and I don't regret it. I did when I was team green.

NVIDIA Is Reportedly Suppressing Inventory Levels For High-End RTX 50 Series GPUs, As a Move To "Market" Its SKUs WCCFTECH.COM NVIDIA is now reported to have "artificially" suppressed inventory levels in the retail segment, as a move to market its RTX 50 GPUs. I almost didn't post this because it's not news, we already know this. Still, it's nice to have confirmation that they are intentionally holding back inventory. Taking a page out of Nintendo's book. At this point you'd have to pay me to use a 5090. There's black screen / driver issues, cable overheating, card catching fire, missing ROPs, and scalping. Why does anyone put up with this?!

To bypass ads on Kindle, connect to a PC, then delete the add folder. Make a new text file and change it's name to be that of the folder (make sure to remove the .txt file extension). Kindle will replace the folder if they think it has been deleted. The text file does not work like a folder does, but because it has the same name they don't replace it with a working folder. I did that after I started seeing advertisements for diaper. I changed my nephew and niece's diaper a few times and I didn't enjoy the reminder of it.

GeForce RTX 5090 drops below RTX 4090 in high-end graphics card benchmark chart - NotebookCheck.net News WWW.NOTEBOOKCHECK.NET The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card has been knocked off its perch at the top of PassMark’s high-end video card benchmark chart. The RTX... Looks like there are a few people with missing ROPs. Based on the average, the 5090 is worse than the 4090.

From what I've been able to find out, it was a phishing campaign run by North Korea. -
Apple pulls iCloud end-to-end encryption feature for UK users after government demanded backdoor | TechCrunch TECHCRUNCH.COM In an unprecedented step, Apple caved to a reported U.K. government’s demand to prevent users from using end-to-end encryption in iCloud. Not even a month ago the FBI and NSA came out and told everyone to use end to end encryption because China had hacked 8 major telecom providers. I think law enforcement often sees encryption as a tool for criminals without understanding the legitimate use cases and why it is so important.

Broadcom, TSMC reportedly exploring deals that would split up Intel

If I were them I wouldn't sell the foundry, I'd lease it out and do chips for other companies. -
Some RTX 5090s are shipping with missing ROP units, leading to less gaming performance: Updated | Tom's Hardware WWW.TOMSHARDWARE.COM 5-8% slower than other 5090 models. According to Jayz, Nvidia's official statement is thay they have identified a defect that affects .5% of cards sold. That number seems a little optimistic to me. At this point I'd run, not walk, away from Nvidia 50 series. Nvidia has a history of beating AMD to the punch with launches, which means AMD tries to beat them in price. That's about when Nvidia would launch their "super" editions that would essentially be more preformance for the same $. I think that was because they don't want to reduce price on all the cards in stock because they have to refund resellers. The brand change means there is no refund. Now we are seeing paper launches, with the 5070ti selling out in seconds and most resellers getting less than a dozen. Between scalpers, melting cables and missing ROPs, this is one series I cannot recommend to anyone.

Gaming on the go would by my use case. I already have a laptop if I want portable computing. I don't own one, probably because if I want to play a game I can go sit at my computer. Next big expenditures are VR and an OLED monitor. Steamdeck would come in after that, though I might want a 2nd graphics card if I have to send my 7900XTX in because it's artificing.

I suspect it's hard to generate fake frames for it. -
PhysX quietly retired on RTX 50 series GPUs: Nvidia ends 32-bit CUDA app support | Tom's Hardware WWW.TOMSHARDWARE.COM With no 64-bit games using PhysX (that we are aware of), the technology is now end-of-life. Yet another reason not to jump on the 50 series bandwagon. List of games that support Nvidia PhysX - PCGamingWiki PCGW - bugs, fixes, crashes, mods, guides and improvements for every PC game WWW.PCGAMINGWIKI.COM Pretty big list, with some of the titles dropping in 2024.

New Steam Deck Update Gives Millions Of Users Improved Battery Life
Kaz replied to Kaz's topic in Hardware News
They probably own iphones. Apple had several updates that made the iphone experience worse on older phones. One update slowed phones down when batteries got older to try and 'save battery life', and another made them take longer to charge. While those might be better for the battery, they feel much worse for the consumer. Both updates felt like they were pushing people to upgrade their phones. Valve's update should be an improvement for end users. -
What the US' first major AI copyright ruling might mean for IP law | TechCrunch TECHCRUNCH.COM Copyright claims against AI companies just got a potential boost. A U.S. federal judge last week handed down a summary judgment in a case... Sam Altman told AI companies to take all the data they could and settle lawsuits later with the billions they made. Looks like that may not have been the best advice.

Broadcom, TSMC reportedly exploring deals that would split up Intel | TechCrunch TECHCRUNCH.COM Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are separately exploring deals to take over parts of Intel, according to a report... Intel started to separate the foundry from their business and this is probably why. I'll be watching their stocks!
