AMD RADEON 6900xt keeps crashing while gaming.

So I manage to get my hands on a 6900xt.

It my first AMD GPU and we are not getting along

I have a recurring issue where my PC crashes while gaming, which is mostly Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 at the moment, but a crash did occurred while playing F1 2020 the other day. A crash can happen at any moment. When it happens the game freezes for about 20 seconds, before the PC reboots. After the reboot the driver for the 6900xt  disappears (yeah!  I'm serious). All the sensors for the 6900xt on my sensor panel disappear too. Max temp on the 6900xt under load is 45-50 degrees.

What I can understand it is either a power issue or a driver issue. The PSU is an overkill for my system as its 1300 watts. So it cannot be an issue with a lack of power. The VGA power cables for the GPU don't seemed to damage too but I will check them with a volt meter tomorrow and for good measure I will swap the out for others if I have spares. I cannot repeat the crash while using bench mark software (3DMARK and Furmark).

Hoping if anyone could help my out with this.

My rig specs are:

CPU: AMD 5900x

GPU: AMD 6900xt

MOBO: MSI 570X MEG ACE.

PSU: 1300 Watt EVGA Super Nova G2

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 3600Mhz 32GB

Does it only display the crashing issue with Call Of Duty ? You say the card benches fine with 3D mark, how does it fair with other games such as CBP2077 or Elite Dangerous (for those wondering, these are some of his other games).

I would say it is not a PSU issue if the GPU is power stable when benching or playing other games.

Have you also tried a prior GPU driver set than what you have been using ? Maybe even go back one farther than that. Don't forget to use DDU.

If it is only COD that has the issue, then it is far more likely a driver issue with that game title to be honest. However for good measure it does not hurt to check other factors as you are.

There is a Windows update flying around causing game issues but cannot recall if it affects both AMD and NVIDIA.

**Edit**

Here it is: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pcgamer.com/amp/a-recent-windows-10-update-is-trashing-framerates-and-causing-games-to-stutter/

If you have it, remove it, just to remove it as a factor.

Other AMD GPU users here may have some more insight.

As you know Call of Duty is alI I'm playing at the moment or F1 2020. It's only happened once it in F1. But when it come to resources F1 uses nothing compared to Call of Duty. I will probably load up CP2077 tonight and see if I get the same result. If I get a crash, I will roll back the driver. I always use DDU now, otherwise I'll get a tiny you in my mind tutting at me :D.

I agree that it's not a PSU issue, but could be the one pin has come loose for the VGA cables. I'm doubtful it's this however still worth a check.

I've gone into the game files of Call of Duty and lowered the VRAM usage, as for some reason it uses the full 16gb when should only needs 8gb.

I am currently stress testing the VRAM with OCCT, been on for an hour with no issue.

For the time being I have contacted AMD customer support hoping they will share some insight into the issue. I'll keep you posted.

Yes I am unsure of the VRAM saturation on COD, This happens to lots of people, myself included, though seemingly without any issues arising.  Worth checking the GPU cables, no harm. Will be interesting to see what AMD states, if anything of use that is. See how CP2077 responds later on, might even be worth using any games that feature an in game benchmark and run those a few times, just to expand on the testing.

Update

Rolled back to 21.2.3 driver.

Manged to play Assassin's Creed Valhalla for an hour with no interruptions. Played COD for 10min and it crashed. However the driver didn't disappear,

Hmmm. I would point the finger at COD but I think testing with more titles will be required to ensure its not another issue. However I would imagine it is a setting related to COD as opposed to the whole thing as I would have imagined AMD would have fixed it it by now, or at least listed it as a known issue in the driver release notes.

One other thing, if you're using a single pci-e power connector that is an 8 pin x2 split, try using only 1 and then 1 from a 2nd pci-e plug just to rule out overloading the rail.

Yes, However rolled back the bios to the previous one just to rule it out.

I think I already have it configed this way. (2 cables from the PSU to GPU).

Another Update.

I think I found the culprit.

I have disabled a few programs running in the background one of them being AIDA64 Extreme and  have had no crashes tonight. I thought I ruled AIDA64 out last week. I will have a few more runs with the program disabled to make sure it is the culprit. It will be a bummer if it is as I used it as sensor panel.

No doubt that could be the cause, I've had many problems with different sensor apps. EVGA Precision X1 is also causing a few games to crash, stupid software nowadays :classic_laugh:

AMD drivers must hate AIDA64 in that case. Must be a sensor conflict with AMD drivers. So far no problems here with AIDA or Precision X1, Nvidia drivers obviously steers clear from using the same sensor addressing as AIDA, or if there is a conflict it simply behaves differently.

Looking on the AIDA Site there is an apprent issue with AIDA64 & AMD Drivers, they do not stat why. I did have another crash while AIDA64 however there was no reboot this time and had a dev error code (6068) with is a directx issue. But with activison, their dev errors dont mean what the display. So I'm putting this crash down to the older driver version.

Its a shame, I like having a sensor panel and the only alternative I know of is MSI Afterburner, I have had issues before with a few games with crashes while using it. But thats when I had Nvidia GPUs. Could be worth another shot I guess.

It sucks as I am not aware of another piece of software out there that does sensor panels, at least not as in-depth as AIDA. Anyone else know of any ?

Depending on how much info I need I use Open Hardware Monitor, GPU-Z and HWinfo64.

I had some trouble on the workstation with OHM though, but never with the last 2.

[edit] I'm not sure if you could get that working on a sensor panel, never tried it.

[edit 2]

Maybe this is an option, using Rainmeter and HWinfo

@Sgt_Swanny

I have extensive playing around with MW Warzone / 2019.  I'd happy to try and reproduce things and/or lend stuff I've found.  Literally playing around with the adv_options file resulted in some non-common 'recommended' settings you see suggested on other forums/reddit yada.

Anyways, lmk!

I took the sensors for the GPU off and it worked fine, then tried with just the temps for the GPU, CPU and coolant. Anything to do with the GPU it crashes. So I using afterburner for the time being.

I will look at Rainmaker when I get a chance. Will let you know how I get on.

I had a look at rainmaker and way out my depth. There is a lot of script wrinting which I dont have the time to do and wont risk spending all that time writing for it not to work.

I also been following a thread on the AIDA forums: https://forums.aida64.com/topic/6581-pc-stopped-when-i-play-games-with-aida64-adrenalin-2020-2012x-issue/page/2/ it's a know issue and apprently AMD and AIDA are working on it, however I don't know how true this is.

Thanks I appreciate it, but I don't think it's a MW Warzone issue. But what non-common recomend settings would you recomend, Always up for improving preformance.

With current drivers, none of the AMD options seem to work correctly (on my system at least) with WZ - Sharpening adds latency, Anti-Lag causes stutters, Chill doesn't work right for whatever reason and so on.  I'd recommend if you have any of those on, to keep 'em off.

The adv_options file (which gets generic recommendations) I tested with nearly every combination of setting possible.  Lowest frametimes without stutter only work well when restricting things even tighter (on my system).  The more renderer worker count you use, the more you offset (I guess this should be obvious to most) the game to render using CPU- not just to feed the GPU.   So depending on your in-game settings (AA, SSR, yada yada) you can heavily tweak those and your adv file to get consistent results, also depending on how you want to play

Example - If I set all the in-game settings to max, I get butter smooth 4K 120+FPS by setting that file to video memory scale @ .65 with the renderer worker count to 10.  However, there is noticeable input lag because now the CPU is seeing heavy 90~100% usage.  But if you don't play with all the eye candy at high resolutions and go with competitive settings (all low/everything off), it can be difficult to get a 6800XT to render the game with above 80% usage, you change that file to say .3, .4 or .5 vid mem and 2, 3, or 4 worker count.  Then the GPU is 100% with CPU @ 40% (10850K - I assume this scales with threads and cores as I can reproduce this on my laptop) and I see frame rates above 200 for most of my games with dips to 170 depending on various areas of the big map.

For instance - I get less input lag with .5 vid mem scale and the count at 4, than I do if I use it as .5 / 6.  My game defaults my settings to .85 and 9 and that is a WHOLE mess of choppity-chopchop.

I dunno maybe this helps maybe it doesn't lol.

Great info and insight there. May even play with those settings myself.
