Okay guys managed to finally get things updated. I wish I could say I'd have more time to continually update real time but I just can't do it with everything else going on. Consequently, updates will be about once a week or so if I can manage that.... And going forward please post relatively new results for this we want it to be fresh hardware results if possible from here on out. Thanks. I colored the intel scores to further draw a delineation between intel and AMD results. If u don't think it fits we can revert back to red only for overall score category. Thank You. If you see anything out of place let me know and I will get it fixed.

You know just comparing to the Zen 2 Ryzen 7 chips on the board, my 4790k is doing just fine with that moderate OC (lost the lottery) on single core.

Yes you guys are here to keep me in line. And that's okay. I did say that out loud. Seems to work best that way, at least for me, and getting missed results or problems sorted out, lol.

In that case I have some work to do. The rig actually needs a lot of work right now (excuses, I know 😅). After you read this you'd think my rig survived a tornado. And in some ways, it has, lol. It's also survived water, methanol, sub zero temps, etc. 

 

I short circuited one of the memory slots even though I gave it quite a bit of time to dry, rotating the rig (working on the cooling system) a line came lose and dropped some coolant on the memory slots. Consequently, I think this rig has already had it's day in the sun (Hence latest project is HP z840 workstation).

 

I can still bench the CPU but cannot use anything but stock settings on the memory speed and timings (stuck at 2133MHz, even though it will run whats in sig in very cold weather pre- cooling accident).

 

I need to replace a pinched line and I also lost my 3rd barrow D5 pump, I first lost PWM for the pump and then it went out completely, so my flow rate is not so good. We do have some cold weather coming up so I will make one more effort with this rig coming up later in the week with just two pumps, the ported heatkiller and ambient temps likely in the mid teens. 

 

However, I do already have some 5.6GHz single core R15 results. 

As well as some 5.6GHz with Pie Fast and other similar benchmarks on benchmate which I will post here later. (im running on the z820 rig right now for aforementioned problems, 9600KF relegated to my hide-out in the bomb shelter in the basement for now.)

I tend to agree with that. It is generally the approach I have taken. CPUs are a whole lot easier to kill than they used to be, but still not as easy as some might think. I generally find a reason to upgrade before they degrade, but we do have to be a little more careful than we used to be. Voltage plus severe heat also seems riskier than voltage plus cold. If I can't overclock the crap out of a CPU or GPU, then I have no interesting in owning it.

Being thinking about that delid kit.

I got a 360mm aio for 80$.

Going custom or a 420m with delid would give me enough temps range for 1.4v but no idea how long degradation gonna take at those voltage.

 

Those chip are fun to play with 😁

In the past i delidded my 4790k and it was worth it but it was paste instead of solder.

I would not worry TOO much about degradation <1.4v assuming that you had adequate cooling and temps <70c. I have run the 12900KF @1.5v. Not smart, but it's still alive.

I see RockitCool has the delid kit back in stock again, but I am waiting until the bare die kit is available. Delid will certainly be better than stock, but I have run all my Intel CPUs bare die since 7960X/7980XE and that is definitely the way to go. I wish Intel would sell all of their CPUs with no IHS. All laptops are bare die and it is kind of stupid that desktop CPUs are not. The IHS is just another stupid piece of crap to have to deal with.

I went bare die on my FX during its last few months of service and that really helped a bit. I am wondering if I should de-lid my Ryzen. I am running PBO oc and generally hit around 4.4GHz in all core workloads and 4650ish at single threaded. I settle around 65c - 70c with a full load and I have 640mm of radiator available. 120w load, 640mm radiator.... 70C..... Like heck,  Chips these days are just so dense. We all know Ryzen scales its clocks on thermals, so I am wondering how much extra thermal headroom I can get out of this thing. But what is stopping me is if the IO and core dies are different heights, that would present a challenge.

I would encourage you not to. Delidding my 5950X provided no benefit. It turned out to be a waste of time and money.

 

I never figured out a bare die solution, and that probably would have helped.

 

When I first got it back from RockitCool temps were much worse than stock. Uneven chiplet heights seem poorly suited for liquid metal. Using normal paste instead put me back to stock temps with the copper IHS.

 

Net benefit was zero. Net loss was what I spent on it.

I never figured out a bare die solution, and that probably would have helped.

 

When I first got it back from RockitCool temps were much worse than stock. Uneven chiplet heights seem poorly suited for liquid metal. Using normal paste instead put me back to stock temps with the copper IHS.

 

Net benefit was zero. Net loss was what I spent on it.

In theory, if the chiplet die sizes are uneven, you could mount the CPU to the delid block, tape it down and lap the dies. I did the same with a 9900K.

Probably so. I was more concerned at the time about recovering what little thermal headroom there was back to at least stock level so I could move on to other things. At that point I was also disappointed to the extent that I was ready to get rid of everything so I could offset the cost of going back to Intel. So, my interest in trying to make it something worth keeping was starting to wane. The WHEA errors, USB drop-outs, modest CPU overclocking capabilities, FCLK limitations and crappy memory performance had pretty much ruined the experience to the point that reigniting my interest was probably going to be impossible.

Eh that's the sort of testimonial I was looking for. So it's a pointless exercise. I wonder why though. Because damn these chiplets get hot. I just dream of seeing high 40s low 50s again like I used to do with my 300watt Vishera. It makes me shake my head.... Like 120watts and I struggle to keep this chip below 70. I've seen those offset mounting kits by der8uer for water blocks and wondered if I should bother. I am also on quite an old CPU block and wondered if upgrading to a new block might be worth it.
