Driver Crash Every Time I Press Ctrl+Shift+E To Record In Game, Why?

 

It's 100% stable otherwise, it's just when trying to record on any driver (I think) it will crash the game & driver.  Specifically Call Of Duty WWII.

Need more information. What card? what driver version? what system specs? What program? (Geforce Exp?)

 

Is this happening while the card is stock? or just when OC'd?

what driver version? AMD-Software-Adrenalin-Edition-22.4.1-Win10-Win11-April5

what system specs? Supermicro h8scm-f board on 16gb ram ddr3-1600 (2 sticks) with amd opteron 4386

What program? Call Of Duty WWII

What are you using to record? That combo in Windows 10 is showing it's for "pressing the Alt or F10 keys shows available keyboard shortcuts. ... Capture a screenshot. Ctrl + E. Show canvas properties. Ctrl + Shift + E."  here's a screenshot of the gamebar commands if they'll help any.

I'm using AMD ReLive or whatevers available in the latest AMD Adrenalin software.  I tested it out on stock bios & got the crash as well.  Maybe I need to DDU & Start Over?

 

I test ALT + R to show the in game OSD of the AMD Software & simply click "RECORD" & it Froze & crashed again.

Yes.  It's fixed on 21.11.3 drivers but had some quality concerns recording & thats about it.

I am wondering if Windows 11 is the issue here. Any chance you can test the GPU and driver set in Windows 10 to see if you have the same issue ?

@ENTERPRISEThanks for the reply buddy & I'm pretty sure it was because I didn't DDU before installing the driver.  It corrupted the recording aspect of the driver.  I'll be testing out the latest AMD-Software-Adrenalin-Edition-22.4.1-Win10-Win11-April5 after a fresh DDU & fresh installation of the driver.  I'll update after I find if it works or not.

@ENTERPRISEThanks buddy.  AMD-Software-Adrenalin-Edition-22.4.1-Win10-Win11-April5 is the culprit, it's crashing on this driver & others too I think while trying to record 4K footage of Call Of Duty WWII.  I guess I'll try the one driver behind 22.4.1 now... 

 

*UPDATE*

whql-amd-software-adrenalin-edition-22.3.1-win10-win11-march17 fixed it again & is a better working driver.

Well it's not solved by the older or newer driver, it's crashing again at 4K & 5K but not at 1080p...  I haven't tested 1440p.

Only thing I can suggest is to keep the higher res but lower the game quality and see if you can record. If not then it could be an inherent driver issue or some form of overlay in the background causing issues and conflicting with the driver. I have seen that sort of issue before with screen recording software and remote desktop software.

@ENTERPRISEThanks man.  I tested lower quality settings & it still crashed.  I even reinstalled Windows 11 all together & tested with no overlay or OSD running in the background, still crashed.  So I DDU'ed again & installed 21.11.3 & so far so good hasn't crashed when recording 4K.  It's ultra-lame that recording is broken on the new drivers for this RX 480 & not the older drivers.

So it's recording 4k now on 21.11.3 but before I record I'm getting 93 fps & when I start recording it goes down to 51 fps.  It didn't do this before because I have recording proof earlier it was recording properly at full frame rate.  I don't know what to do bro's.

 

*Update* 

When using DDU I noticed some Microsoft Remote Display Adapters in the mix when there should just be the 1 AMD display driver to uninstall.  Is it because I'm using Windows 11 Pro with remote desktop capabilities?  I lose 10-15 realistically when recording at 4k, more if I'm looking up at the sky it cuts the fps in half from 93 fps to 51 fps basically on Call Of Duty WWII.

You could be looking at symptom of later drivers that are not overly optimized for that GPU. See it all the time. Latest or newer drivers are not always the best. Sometimes sticking to an older driver set is a better option. Generally speaking a driver set that was released when your card was the current gen. Newer drivers released for newer architectures have been known to regress in performance for older architectures.  If you have already tried that, then you may be looking at Windows 11 being a factor.

Thanks bro I have been on Windows 11 for quite some time now without many issues.  I even have footage showing proper fps on the RX 480 @ 4k on my YouTube channel just can't remember which driver version I was using.  I guess I can look at the upload date & correspond with the proper driver version.

If all was fine, the only factors are your driver change and Windows updates (without knowing anything more about the system). So you may be able to restore performance with a DDU and installation of older drivers. Fingers crossed. 

 

As you say, correlate the date of your video to the drivers of the time and you are on a good course.

So far I installed V5-UWP-PolarisVegaNavi-WHQL-Insight-NimeZSlim-Adrenalin-22.4.1-DCH-HotFix3.0 from Forums.Guru3d & it's said to fix AMD VCE issues.  Although it didn't fix it for Call Of Duty WWII, I'm sure a different driver will I hope.  I need 4-5K recording capabilities without fps drop.  I notice the CPU Utilization doesn't change when I enable recording it stays about the same about 40-50% in game 4k maxed out with Pre T2X rendering at 50% and shadows disabled since shadows hit fps hard without a significant visual impact.  They use tons of shadow maps anyway so they are just for dynamic shadows I believe.  Right now I'm downloading 19.9.2 which is really old but known to have really good ReLive support so I'll test it out.  Thanks for the all the help!  I hope we get to the bottom of this issue!

For some reason the atikmdag-patcher-1.4.12 doesn't work on 19.9.2 drivers so I'm going all the way back to the driver which was supposed to improve performance for Call Of Duty WWII, 17.11.1.  We will see.

 

*Update*
17.11.1 as soon as I tried record said needed to enable "Record Desktop" so I did & as soon as I started recording the whole system went to black screen & restarted so 17.11.1 is a no go but I was able to patch the driver on an older patcher.  So maybe I'll try patching 19.9.2 again...  Test it out.  This is so f*ing annoying btw.  21.11.3 works fine but with fps drop idk what to do.  Maybe I'll just forget about recording at 4k?

I am willing to bet the issue you will have with older drivers will be associated with Windows 11 to be honest. So that may be an extra struggle, only one way to confirm that but may not be realistic unless you have a spare rig or are happy to go back to Windows 10 to test.

@ENTERPRISEYeah I'm sure your right buddy.  I tried dxtory with the AMD VCE Codec & it worked without crashing but had the fps drop again.  Maybe the GPU cannot handle high fps 4k encode is the reason why.

If the xbox dvr was giving it issues, maybe the capture feature in the xbox game bar could be doing the same? So if you disabled the app it might make a difference?
