Scientists are hailing the results of a small clinical trial as groundbreaking after a single immunotherapy drug caused every participant's rectal cancer — typically treated with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery — to disappear after six months.

 

Participants all had stage 2 or 3 rectal adenocarcinoma (meaning the cancer had reached the lymph nodes but hadn't metastasized) with a specific mutation that's particularly sensitive to chemotherapy. They received the monoclonal antibody dostarlimab intravenously every three weeks for six months, a total of nine cycles.

 

The rectal cancer tumors vanished for all 14 patients who completed treatment — a full clinical remission. The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

Despite the tiny sample size, the results are promising.

 

“That’s 100% of patients. We never, ever say that about cancer treatments,” NBC News medical contributor Dr. Natalie Azar said on TODAY Wednesday, calling the findings "unprecedented."

 

The standard of care for this kind of cancer is usually chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. “As you can imagine, (these) leave people with significant disability, and only about 25% of those folks will have a clinical remission,” Azar said.

Good news is pretty rare these days. Apparently the doctor who presented these finding was not able to finish her presentation before being interrupted by joyful tears and applause.

You can tell the person who wrote this article doesn't have a medical background in the slightest. My medical background is just knowing some doctors, surgeon and people who work in the pharmacuitical industry but I know enough to know that cures don't exist. The only time a competant doctor would say "cure" is when they're saying "There's no such thing as cures. There is only treatments."

 

But still, this is pretty good news. This is one of the most common types of cancer, hopefully slight changes will make it work with other cancers too.

I can only agree after reading ton of stuff on NCBI. It seem they found that the same MED can fix this too endometrial cancer

While I don't trust a single thing coming from giant multi national pharmaceutical companies, this is actually some promising news in an age of nothing but bad news it seems like.  I wouldn't say a "cure" either, as mentioned.  However, 100% success rate in the first set of trails, that's promising.  Let's wait and see how those patients recover in the next few months to years, and see how this particular drug goes on.  It could be something wonderful, it could be riddled with problems.  We don't know for sure yet.  Regardless, its still fantastic news.

That was the best part, the study couldn't get ANY of the big companies to back it because of the possible negative feedback of killing all the test subjects.(It was used on ALL subjects in place of known treatments with some success rate at an early stage.) A small company finally agreed,but when the doctors went to start the test they'd been bought by a large corp. and had to remind the corp the company had agreed to back the test.
