In this review & benchmark series, we're testing the AMD Zen 4 Ryzen 9 7950X CPU (R9 7950X) versus the Intel i9-12900K, AMD R9 5950X, AMD R9 3900X, and even the AMD R7 1700. We have plenty of tests coming up on the R9 7900X, R7 7700X, and R5 7600X, but those will be in videos immediately following this one. For now, our focus is on testing the 7950X and explaining the new behavior where the CPU clocks to the highest frequency it can achieve at 95 degrees Celsius -- and that's normal, not considered "overheating" or "thermal throttling" with these new CPUs.

Derbauer delidded it and brought temps down by 20c on all cores. It looks hella promising. He also said that his direct die frames are already in production. If I were to get AM5, I would totally delid. Which is crazy because AMD never gets delidded. Running a 24/7 OC of 5.6GHz seems doable now. Which is also crazy.

Was it soldered or paste? Looking at the benchmark am impressed by the 12700k 12900k in game. If the 13700k / 13900k is not alot better am sticking to my 12700k and maybe a delid.

Man all those SMD's. I haven't watched the video yet, but I imagine this one would be difficult to delid.

...95 C seems to be the new (& fairly high) algorithm trigger for clocks, but as DerBauer showed, it certainly does not hurt to create additional temp headroom. If/when I upgrade, my 1320x63 loop and the 5950X CPU block can just migrate 'as is' since my CPU block uses the stock AMD backplate.

Speaking of upgrade, I'm in no hurry, as much as the 7950X is a superb platform...what I found very telling is just how strong the 5800x 3D Vcache is compared in gaming to both the 7950X and 12900K --- 5800x 3D Vcache might be a better upgrade for folks who do mostly gaming and perhaps planning on getting a RTX3/4K or AMD RDNA2/3 but want to keep their AM4 board and RAM.  Never say never, but for now I am waiting for the refresh of the 7950X (w/ 3D Vcache ?!) and will check out RTX 4K Ti / AMD RDNA3 XTX before then to see if it is worth upgrading GPUs.

Would not be surprised if Amd pull a Broadwell on us and never release another 3d v cache cpu.

20 Deg C is pretty crazy just from removing the IHS.

It's pretty cool how he showed the 7700x's PCB ripping away from the rest of the chips etc.  Made me think he should or possibly could integrate some type of pressure system with a specialty type of material for a rubberized O-Rings that allows even pressure to be applied to the PCB to maintain placement while the IHS is being shifted back and forth to break the bond.  I hope that makes sense.  couple beers in and my mind starts getting goofy lol.

...but, but, but I read it on the internet, so it must be true 🥴

...then again, AMD might just keep most of the Zen 4 V3 Cache cores for their Epyc enterprise line, in which case I will say that I liked AMD better when it was still the underdog.
